INTRODUCTION AND OBJECTIVES: Heart failure (HF) is a major public health problem, and the prevalence increases with age. In Spain, there are considerable differences between autonomous communities. The aim of this study was to analyze trends in premature mortality due to HF between 1999 and 2013 in Spain by autonomous community. METHODS: We analyzed data on mortality due to HF in Spanish residents aged 0 to 75 years by autonomous community between 1999 and 2013...

Hybrid imaging for ischemic heart disease refers to the fusion of information from a single or usually from multiple cardiovascular imaging modalities enabling synergistic assessment of the presence, the extent, and the severity of coronary atherosclerotic disease along with the hemodynamic significance of lesions and/or with evaluation of the myocardial function. A combination of coronary computed tomography angiography with myocardial perfusion imaging, such as single-photon emission computed tomography and positron emission tomography, has been adopted in several centers and implemented in international coronary artery disease management guidelines...

INTRODUCTION AND OBJECTIVES: A healthy lifestyle (HLS) is essential to attaining optimal cardiovascular health. Our objective was to assess the association between a HLS score and the incidence of hard cardiovascular disease (CVD) events. METHODS: The SUN project is a dynamic, prospective, multipurpose cohort of Spanish university graduates with a retention proportion of 92%. In 19 336 participants, we calculated a HLS score ranging from 0 to 10 points: never smoking, physical activity (> 20 METs-h/wk), Mediterranean diet adherence (≥ 4/8 points), low body mass index (≤ 22), moderate alcohol intake (women, 0...

INTRODUCTION AND OBJECTIVES: Hypertension causes subclinical changes in left ventricular structure and function, namely diastolic dysfunction. Diastolic dysfunction is a predictor of heart failure, being involved in the association between hypertension and heart failure with preserved ejection fraction. We aimed to determine whether patients with prehypertension have early changes in diastolic function in a large community-based cohort of asymptomatic adults. METHODS: A cross-sectional evaluation was performed of a community-based cohort consisting of 925 adults, aged 45 years or older, without known cardiovascular disease...

INTRODUCTION AND OBJECTIVES: Contemporary data on the incidence and prognosis of heart failure (HF) and the influence of left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) in the setting of acute coronary syndrome (ACS) are scant. The aim of this study was to examine the relationship between LVEF and HF with long-term prognosis in a cohort of patients with ACS. METHODS: This is a retrospective observational study of 6208 patients consecutively admitted for ACS to 2 different Spanish hospitals...

INTRODUCTION AND OBJECTIVES: Fast ventricular tachycardias in the ventricular fibrillation zone in patients with an implantable cardioverter-defibrillator are susceptible to antitachycardia pacing (ATP) termination. Some manufacturers allow programming 2 ATP bursts: before charging (BC) and during (DC) charging. The aim of this study was to describe the safety and effectiveness of ATP BC and DC for fast ventricular tachycardias in the ventricular fibrillation zone in patients with an implantable cardioverter-defibrillator in daily clinical practice...
