Cell therapy is actively used to treat skin defects, particularly burn lesions. The effectiveness of its application may depend on the appropriate choice of wound dressings used together with any cellular material. The aim of the study was to investigate the interaction of 4 hydrogel dressings used in clinical practice with human cells in an in vitro model to determine if their use in combination with cell therapy is possible. The effect of the dressings on the growth medium was assessed by considering the changes caused in the medium's acid-base equilibrium (pH) and viscosity...

BACKGROUND: Clubfoot constitutes roughly 70 percent of all foot deformities in arthrogryposis syndrome and 98% of those in classic arthrogryposis. Treatment of arthrogrypotic clubfoot is difficult and challenging due to a combination of factors like stiffness of ankle-foot complex, severe deformities and resistance to conventional treatment, frequent relapses and the challenge is further compounded by presence of associated hip and knee contractures. METHOD: A prospective clinical study was conducted using a sample of nineteen clubfeet in twelve arthrogrypotic children...

Surgical management of knee synovitis secondary to mild haemophilia, without any significant previous medical history and an adverse family history of haematological disorders, is arduous. Due to its rare occurrence, the diagnosis is often delayed or sometimes missed, leading to the grave and often lethal consequences in intraoperative and postoperative periods. Hardly isolated knee arthropathy due to mild haemophilia has been reported in the available literature. In this report, we present the management of a case of a 16-year-old male with isolated knee synovitis with undiagnosed mild haemophilia, who came to us with the first episode of knee bleeding...

BACKGROUND: Traumatic brain injury, mainly caused by the unintentional falls and motor vehicle accidents, is a serious condition encompassing a spectrum of pathological features from axonal to hemorrhagic injuries. Among these, cerebral contusions significantly contribute to death and disability following the injury and occur in up to 35% of cases. This study aimed to investigate the predictors of radiological contusion progression in traumatic brain injury. METHODS: We performed a retrospective cross-sectional study using the files of the patients with mild traumatic brain injury who had cerebral contusions from 21 March 2021 to 20 March 2022...

BACKGROUND: The most common cause of death or severe impairment in children older than one-year-old is traumatic brain injury (TBI). Assessing TBI in children with minor head trauma (MHT) using clinical findings from history-taking and a physical exam is crucial to minimizing unnecessary brain CTs and more accurately predicting TBI. We aimed to evaluate the findings of brain CT scans in children with mild head trauma and their relationship with clinical signs and symptoms to avoid unnecessary interventions in many children with MHT...

INTRODUCTION: Mass casualty incidents (MCIs) have a profound impact on health care systems worldwide. Following recent incidents within the United Kingdom (UK), notably terrorist attacks in Manchester and the Grenfell Tower fire in London, there has been a renewed interest in how the UK would cope with a burn MCI. A Burns Incidence Response Team (BIRT) is a new development incorporated into the Burn Annex of the NHS England National Concept of Operation for Managing Mass Casualties. It is a mobile advice team of healthcare professionals with burns expertise who can support the subsequent management of an MCI, and triage effectively...

Stevens-Johnson syndrome (SJS) and toxic epidermal necrolysis (TEN) are conditions characterized by an immune-mediated skin reaction that results in blistering and epidermal detachment. Most cases are caused by drug hypersensitivity; however, recently there have been many publications documenting the association between coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) and SJS/TEN. Our objective is to explore a case of a 4-year-old female who presented with a papular rash on her thighs that progressively worsened and spread to her face, trunk, and genital area...

Because few studies have assessed blood alcohol concentration (BAC)-positive risk conditions in trauma activation patients, this retrospective investigation pursued such an analysis. The parent database included consecutive trauma center admissions from January 21 to July 21 for 2018-2020. The supplementary electronic medical record audit of trauma activation patients aged 18-60 years (TA18-60) assessed alcohol misuse, smoking history, and serum bicarbonate levels. An alcohol misuse risk score was created by assigning a value of 0 (no) or 1 (yes) for each risk condition: 1) smoking history, 2) BAC-positive status, 3) BAC ≥ 100 mg/dL with Glasgow Coma Scale score (GCS) ≥ 13, 4) age ≥ 40 years, and 5) bicarbonate level ≥ 20 mmol/L in BAC-positive patients and summing the total score (range, 0-5)...
