The introduction of the first antidepressants in the 50s of the 20th century radically changed the treatment of depression, while providing information on pathophysiological aspects of this disease. New antidepressants drugs (agomelatine, tianeptine, vortioxetine) are providing data that give rise to pathophysiological hypotheses of depression that differ from the classic monoaminergic theory. In this sense, tianeptina, an atypical drug by its mechanism of differential action, contributes to clarify that in depression there is more than monoamines...

INTRODUCTION: Facial emotion recognition (FER) is a fundamental component in social interaction. We know that FER is disturbed in patients with severe mental disorder (SMD), as well as those with a history of childhood trauma. MATERIAL AND METHODS: We intend to analyze the possible relationship between the existence of trauma in childhood irrespective of a SMD, measured by the CTQ scale and facial expression recognition, in a sample of three types of subjects (n=321): healthy controls (n=179), patients with BPD (n=69) and patients with a first psychotic episode (n=73)...

OBJECTIVE: Little is known about the role of coping in relation to suicidal risk in adolescents with Adjustment Disorder (AD). The present study aimed to assess the relation between suicidal ideation and intention and coping strategies in a clinical sample of adolescents with AD, paying special attention to gender differences. MATERIAL AND METHOD: Self-reported questionnaires about suicidal ideation and intention and coping strategies were administered to 108 adolescents with an AD diagnosis...

INTRODUCTION: There has been little change in the incidence of suicidal behaviour and reattempts in recent years. Evidence is needed on the incidence of suicidal behaviour in the psychiatric population and its follow-up. MATERIAL AND METHOD: A prospective multi-centre case-control study. The sample covered the cases of 440 patients seen as psychiatric emergencies. For this purpose, we used the Vital Adverse Event Scale by Brugha and screening with the Columbia Scale...

INTRODUCTION: To identify barriers to complete recovery in patients suffering from major depressive disorder. METHODS: A total of 461 psychiatrists participated in a cross-sectional, non-randomised, qualitative and multi-centre study based on a survey. The study questionnaire included 42 ítems related to management, prevalence, patient profile, impact of residual symptoms, barriers to full recovery, and strategies to increase complete recovery. RESULTS: Complete recovery was defined by 86% of participants as complete remission of symptoms plus functional recovery...

Clinical staging is a diagnostic tool used in other medical specialties, which has resulted from the combination of a categorical and dimensional approach. In the last 2decades, the usefulness of its application in the field of psychiatry has been suggested, mainly as a tool for diagnostic help, and therapeutic and prognostic orientation. In this paper we review the clinical staging models that have been proposed to date for bipolar disorder, depression and schizophrenia. A literature search was performed in PubMed and Medline databases...

OBJECTIVES: To analyse changes in suicide mortality trends in Spain between 1980-2016 using joinpoint regression models. METHODS: Mortality data were obtained from the INE. For each gender, age-group-specific and standardised (overall and truncated) rates (ASR) were calculated by the direct method (using the European standard population). The joinpoint analysis was used to identify the best-fitting points where a statistically significant change in the trend occurred...

INTRODUCTION: Suicidal ideation, suicidal behavior, and non-suicidal self-injury behavior are serious public health problems among adolescents. A significant proportion of adolescents evaluated in clinical settings meet criteria for the dysregulation profile (DP). DP is characterized by restlessness, irritability, "affective storms", mood instability, and aggression in a disproportionate grade to the situation. This DP might be related to increased risk of self-injurious thoughts and behaviors...

INTRODUCTION: Here, we present the first description of the Andalusian Bipolar Family (ABiF) Study. This longitudinal investigation of families from Andalusia, Spain commenced in 1997 with the aim of elucidating the molecular genetic causes of bipolar affective disorder. The cohort has since contributed to a number of key genetic findings, as reported in international journals. However, insight into the genetic underpinnings of the disorder in these families remains limited. METHOD: In the initial 1997-2003 study phase, 100 multiplex bipolar disorder and other mood disorder families were recruited...

INTRODUCTION: Suicide is an important public health problem, it represents one of the major causes of unnatural death, and there are many factors that affect the risk of suicidal behaviour. The present study analyzes the temporal and spatial variations of mortality by suicide in Spain and its relationship with gross domestic product (GDP) per capita. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A retrospective study was performed, in which deaths by suicide, sex and age group in 50 Spanish provinces between 2000 and 2012 were analyzed...

OBJECTIVES: Reduced performance in several cognitive domains has been repeatedly related to Hepatitis C Virus (HCV). Nevertheless, there is no consensus about the severity or cognitive profile. Moreover, other possible influential variables are scarcely controlled. The aim of this study is to define the specific cognitive profile in HCV after controlling for confounding variables. METHODS: Forty-two HCV patients were distributed in two groups according to the presence of co-infection with Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV); a third group with 22 healthy controls was also included...

OBJECTIVES: Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) is one of the main techniques available for the treatment of such serious mental illnesses as schizophrenia and drug-resistant depression. The pre-anaesthetic assessment appropriate for patients with various mental disorders or pathologies does not differ substantially from that of any patient prior to undergoing anaesthesia for a surgical procedure. The present review aims to propose guidelines to achieve a higher level of safety and effectiveness during ECT in the most frequent situations, in accordance with the current literature...
