In this article, we report a case with spontaneous rupture of extensor pollicis longus tendon due to calcified extensor carpi radialis tendon group, which has not been published in the literature previously. Successful thumb extension was achieved in a 68-year-old male patient with the transfer of the extensor indicis proprius tendon at two months postoperatively. It appears that calcified extensor carpi radialis tendon group constitutes high risk for a possible attritional rupture of the extensor pollicis longus tendon...

A 67-year-old female patient admitted to our outpatient clinic suffering from pain in both thighs for one year without any history of trauma. Patient was receiving alendronate therapy for five years. Physical examination revealed pain increasing with weight-bearing in both thighs with full range of hip and knee movements. Radiographs showed an area of thickened cortex of middle femoral diaphysis in both femurs, but no fracture. Bone scan showed a single area of increased uptake of radioisotope. These images were compatible with stress fractures of both femurs...

Gluteal compartment syndrome is a rather rare syndrome often leading to severe sequelae, sepsis, renal failure, and even death due to delayed diagnosis. Establishing early diagnosis is essential to prevent complications associated with ischemia. In this article, we report a 56-year-old male patient who developed gluteal compartment syndrome after incisional hernia and nephrectomy surgery in lateral decubitus position. Gluteal muscle insufficiency developing after fasciotomy and Trendelenburg gait improved within two years...

Pigmented villonodular synovitis is a benign proliferative tumor of the synovium. It is very rare, and most cases occur in the knee joint. In this article, we report a case of localized pigmented villonodular synovitis in the knee joint of a 14-year-old boy. This condition is rare in the knees of the children. We preferred to remove the tumor with arthrotomy instead of arthroscopy for two reasons: (i) the patient was obese, (ii) we thought that recurrence risk was high after arthrotomy.

OBJECTIVES: This study aims to investigate the isokinetic characteristics of wrist strength in flexion, extension, supination, pronation, radial, and ulnar deviation in patients with moderate or severe carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS). PATIENTS AND METHODS: Thirteen patients (23 hands) (2 males, 11 females; mean age 45 years; range 29 to 60 years) with moderate or severe CTS were compared to six healthy control subjects (12 hands) (2 males, 4 females; mean age 41 years; range 27 to 63 years) in this study, which was conducted between January 2016 and April 2016...

OBJECTIVES: This study aims to assess the mortality and morbidity rates of patients with intertrochanteric femoral fractures who were performed proximal femoral nail-antirotation (PFNA) or cemented, bipolar hemiarthroplasty with calcar replacement. PATIENTS AND METHODS: A total of 127 patients (42 males, 85 females; mean age 79.2 years; range 55 to 98 years) who were treated due to proximal femoral fracture between January 2008 and January 2011 were compared retrospectively in terms of intraoperative mortality, total mortality, and monthly distribution of mortality rates...

OBJECTIVES: This study aims to evaluate the effect of intra-articular tranexamic acid (TA) administration on the amount of blood in the drains, the amount of blood transfusion, length of hospital stay, and the total cost in total knee arthroplasty (TKA) patients. PATIENTS AND METHODS: The study included a total of 118 patients (24 males, 94 females; mean age 67.0 years, range 52 to 81 years) who underwent primary unilateral TKA surgery. Patients were divided into two groups as 58 patients who were performed intra-articular injection of 2 g TA after closure of articular capsule (TA group; 10 males, 48 females, mean age 65...

OBJECTIVES: This study aims to assess the radiographic, histological, and biomechanical effects of pregabalin on fracture healing in a rat model of femur fracture. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 32 female Wistar-Albino rats (mean age 12±1 weeks; mean body weight 236±12 grams) were randomized into four groups with eight rats in each group. Groups A and B were the control groups whereas C and D were the treatment groups. Drugs were delivered by oral gavage. Radiographic, histological and biomechanical evaluations were performed after sacrificing the rats in groups A and C on 15th postoperative day and the rats in groups B and D on 30th postoperative day...

OBJECTIVES: This study aims to investigate whether or not it is possible to avoid intra-articular screw penetration in the application of distal radius volar plate with minimal use of fluoroscopy and thereby reduce to a minimum the risk of exposure of the surgical team to radiation. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Volar plate with distal screw application with minimal use of fluoroscopy was performed in a total of 50 patients (22 males, 28 females; mean age 43.52 years; range 18 to 76 years) with unstable distal radius fracture following reduction of fracture between June 2014 and May 2016...

Although, trauma, foot deformity (pesplanovalgus), systemic diseases such as diabetes mellitus and lupus, drugs (steroids, antineoplastic) and excessive alcohol consumption have all been accused in the etiology of avascular necrosis of the tarsal bones, spontaneous avascular necrosis of the navicular bone, especially in adults, is a rare entity. In this article, we report a 50-year-old female patient with bilateral, spontaneous avascular necrosis of the navicular bone and related severe talonavicular arthrosis...

Herein we report a case of patellar aneurysmal bone cyst of a 32-year-old female patient who was admitted to our outpatient clinic due to the swelling on her left knee. She was describing no trauma history but increasing pain and that the mass was expanding gradually by the time. Although it occurs rarely in patella, evaluation by radiographic and magnetic resonance images revealed that the mass was due to the patellar aneurysmal bone cyst, which also destructed the surface of the joint. Although there was no impairment in the range of motion of the patient's left knee in the preoperative evaluation, because of the destruction, we performed total patellectomy and extensor mechanism reconstruction by Zaricznyj technique instead of curettage and grafting...

Escobar (multiple pterygium) syndrome is progressive and a very rare syndrome. It is generally characterized by multiple pterygia that are found in the cervical, antecubital and popliteal regions. In this report, we present the treatment management of a 14-year-old case with late stage Escobar syndrome who was admitted due to multiple pterygia and bilateral knee contractures. The treatment of this case was conducted in collaboration with the department of orthopedics and the department of physical therapy. The treatment of the case was done in three stages: soft tissue procedures, femoral recurvatum osteotomy and triple arthrodesis, respectively...

Acute monoarthritis is a common situation in orthopedic emergency where the patient presents with typical inflamed joint. It is hard to clinically distinguish inflammatory arthritis of bacterial origin from monoarthritis attacks of gout disease. If these two situations, which are the most common causes of acute monoarthritis, are misdiagnosed, outcomes might be catastrophic and costly. Synovial fluid analysis is the most reliable method for confirming the diagnosis although it might not always lead to definitive diagnosis...

OBJECTIVES: This study aims to investigate the significance of demographic and clinical factors on incidence of second (contralateral) hip fracture in elderly Hungarian population using the nationwide health insurance database in Hungary. PATIENTS AND METHODS: The study included a total of 3,783 patients (917 males, 2,866 females) treated for primary monotraumatic femoral neck fractures caused by low-energy trauma in the year 2000. Cox regression and Kaplan-Meier survival analyses, and log-rank test were performed to evaluate the following prognostic factors: age, gender, place of living, type of primary fracture and surgical intervention, hospital providing treatment for primary fracture, and comorbidities...
