OBJECTIVES: Hyponatremia and atrial fibrillation (AF) have been established as strong predictors for worse clinical outcomes for patients with heart failure (HF). However, less is known about the hyponatremia in relation to the occurrence of AF. This study aims to investigate the possible relationship between hyponatremia and AF in patients with chronic HF and reduced ejection fraction (HFrEF). METHODS: Turkish research team-HF (TREAT-HF) is a network that has been undertaking multicenter, observational cohort studies in HF...

OBJECTIVES: There are little data on the long-term clinical outcomes of optimal medical therapy (OMT) compared with successful percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) in patients with chronic total occlusions (CTOs). METHODS: A total of 388 patients with ≥1 CTO were enrolled from January 2008 to December 2010. 62 patients were excluded, and 326 patients were divided into an OMT group (n = 125) and PCI group (n = 201) according to the initial treatment strategy...

BACKGROUND: Economic crisis poses an immense threat to public health worldwide and has been linked to cardiovascular morbidity and mortality. Greece is facing a distinctive recession over the recent years. However, the exact impact on coronary artery disease (CAD) burden has not been adequately addressed. METHODS: Demographic, clinical and angiographic data of 3895 hospitalized patients were retrospectively studied. Patients were classified in those before crisis (2006-2007, n=1228) and those during crisis (2011-2015, n=2667)...

Cardiovascular diseases are the first cause of death in western societies. Therapeutic interventions in the individual patient should be guided by the so-called ischemic risk of this patient. PURPOSE: The aim of the study was to study the ischemic prognostic scores GRACE and CHA2 DS2 -VASc, in patients underwent angioplasty to highlight which best predicts better the ischemic risk. RESULTS: 667 patients participated in the study with an average age of 61 ± 11 years and were followed-up for 2 years...

BACKGROUND: To investigate the feasibility and outcomes of Impella 2.5 support in patients with severe aortic valve stenosis (AS) and cardiogenic shock (CS) who underwent emergency percutaneous balloon aortic valvuloplasty (BAV) with or without percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI). METHODS AND RESULTS: We retrospectively analyzed a consecutive series of patients with severe AS and CS who underwent Impella 2.5 support following emergency BAV with or without subsequent PCI...

The role of women and foreign medical graduates in cardiology research published in the United States has received limited study. We examined the characteristics of the first and last authors of all original contributions and review articles published in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology from October 1, 2015 to October 1, 2016. A total of 345 articles were identified, with 687 first and last authors originating from ≥50 different countries. Overall 17% of authors were women (20% of first and 14% of last authors)...

OBJECTIVE: This study sought to investigate the effects of Guanfu total base on Bcl-2 and Bax expression and the correlation of Bcl-2 and Bax expression with atrial fibrillation. METHODS: Twenty-four male Sprague-Dawley rats were randomly divided into control, model, and treatment groups (n = 8 each). A combined intravenous injection of CaCl2 (10 mg/mL) and acetylcholine (Ach; 66 μg/mL) was administered to the model and treatment groups for 7 consecutive days to induce atrial fibrillation...

BACKGROUND: Pulmonary hypertension (PH), regardless of its aetiology, is associated with an impaired outcome in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). The aim of our study was to determine the incidence, the cause and impact of PH as detected by echocardiography in COPD patients. METHODS: Patients with confirmed COPD of any stage were evaluated by echocardiography for the likelihood of PH according to the proposed criteria. Patients with possible/likely to have PH underwent right heart catheterization, upon agreement, to confirm the presence, severity and cause of PH...

Cardiac Resynchronization Therapy (CRT) is an established therapeutic option for the subset of patients with heart failure (HF), reduced ejection fraction (EF) and dyssynchrony evidenced by electrocardiography. Benefit from CRT has been proven in many clinical trials, yet a sizeable proportion of these patients with wide QRS do not respond to this intervention, despite the updated practice guidelines. Several echocardiographic indices, targeting mechanical rather than electrical dyssynchrony, have been suggested to address this issue, but research so far has not succeeded in providing a single and simple measurement with adequate sensitivity and specificity for identification of responders...
