Pericardial disorders constitute a relatively common cause of heart disease. Although acute pericarditis, and especially the idiopathic forms which are the most prevalent, is considered a benign disease overall, it's short and long term complications, namely recurrent pericarditis, cardiac tamponade and constrictive pericarditis constitute a matter of concern in the medical community. In recent years several clinical trials contributed to redefine our traditional approach to pericardial diseases. In this review we provide the most recent evidence concerning diagnosis, treatment modalities and short and long-term prognosis of the most common pericardial disorders...

Understanding of the pathophysiological mechanisms is the cornerstone of preventive and treatment strategies in the battle against coronary artery disease. Hyperlipidemia, arterial hypertension, smoking and diabetes, are established risk factors affecting coronary vasculature. However, the focal formation of atherosclerotic lesions in certain arterial regions underscores that local factors are implicated in the initiation and progression of atherosclerosis. Introduction of novel imaging modalities and technological advances offered new insights and acknowledged intravascular hemodynamics, and particularly flow-derived endothelial shear stress as a critical factor in the natural history of coronary artery disease...

INTRODUCTION: Chronic intermittent renal replacement therapy(RRT) is an alternate method of decongestion for patients presenting with diuretic-resistant, end-stage heart failure(HF) and cardiorenal syndrome. The optimal method of vascular access has not been confirmed. This study compared the 6-month outcomes of patients with end-stage HF after the creation of arteriovenous communications (AVC) versus other means of RRT. METHODS: We treated 40 patients with chronic, intermittent, ambulatory RRT, of whom 15 (37...

OBJECTIVE: In cardiac magnetic resonance imaging (CMR), incidental pathological findings are frequently found outside the investigated cardiovascular system. Some of these findings might have clinical implications. The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of incidental extracardiac findings (ECF) in CMR and their clinical significance. METHODS: A total of 4165 CMR reports from 2009-2012 were retrospectively reviewed for ECF. Two hundred-twenty reports with ECF were found...

Hypothermia occurs when the core body temperature falls below 35°C, which, in severe cases, can lead to electrocardiographic changes. Several conditions that occur in the psychiatric population increase the risk of hypothermia. This risk can be further increased by the use of several classes of medications such as antipsychotics, beta-adrenergic antagonists and benzodiazepines. We report on three psychiatric patients who were admitted for hypothermia and developed electrocardiographic manifestations (sinus bradycardia, QT prolongation and Osborn waves), which completely resolved after treatment...

Coronary artery aneurysm is a rare congenital or vascular inflammation-based anomaly for which the clinical course and optimal timing of treatment remain unclear. Here, we report a case of sudden death caused by a giant coronary artery aneurysm of the left anterior descending artery that presented with chest pain. This case suggests that urgent interventional or surgical repair is needed when a large coronary aneurysm presents with acute ischemic symptoms.

OBJECTIVE: To conduct a systematic review and meta-analysis to summarize evidence and determine the impact of coronary revascularization (CR) on cardiac patients' Health-Related Quality of Life (HRQoL), highlighting factors that may affect this outcome in patients. METHODS: A systematic search of Medline (Pubmed), EMBASE, Cochrane Library, Sciverse (Science Direct and Scopus) and PsycInfo was conducted to identify studies published from January 2000 to December 2012...
