REVIEW
George Michas, George Karvelas, Athanasios Trikas
Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is a significant and ever-growing problem in Europe, accounting for nearly 45% of all deaths and leading to significant morbidity. Greece is one of the European Union member states that top the list of deaths due to ischemic heart disease and stroke, a fact that is mainly attributed to unfavorable changes in modifiable risk factors. The aim of this review is to examine the latest evidence on the most important CVD risk factors. According to studies conducted during the last two decades, the prevalence of arterial hypertension, hypercholesterolemia, diabetes mellitus, and obesity remained relatively stable or increased...

Smoking during pregnancy is a risk factor associated with adverse pregnancy outcomes. Despite that these outcomes are well known, a considerable proportion of pregnant women continue to smoke during this critical period. This paper evaluates critically smoking cessation interventions targeting pregnant women. We describe the findings of key published studies, review papers and expert statements to report the efficacy and safety of strategies for smoking cessation in pregnancy, including counseling and pharmacotherapy...

The field of cardiac electrophysiology has greatly developed over the past decades. As a consequence, the use of electrophysiological studies (EPS) in clinical practice has also significantly augmented, with a progressively increasing number of certified electrophysiology centers and specialists. Since Zipes et al published the Guidelines for Clinical Intracardiac Electrophysiology and Catheter Ablation Procedures in 1995, no official document summarizing current EPS indications has been published.

PURPOSE: Medical advances in pediatric oncology have led to increases in survival but the long-term adverse effects of treatment in childhood cancer survivors have not yet been examined in depth. In this systematic review, we aimed to study the prevalence and risk factors of late-onset cardiomyopathy (LOCM) among survivors of childhood lymphoma treated with anthracyclines. METHODS: Following the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines we searched Pubmed/Medline, abstracted data and rated studies on quality regarding late-onset (>1 year following treatment) cardiotoxicity of anthracyclines in survivors of childhood lymphoma...

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the effects of levocarnitine on cardiac function, urinary albumin, high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP), brain natriuretic peptide (BNP) and troponin in patients with coronary heart disease and heart failure. METHODS: 246 patients with CHD-caused HF was selected and randomly divided into Group A and Group B. A fully automatic biochemical analyzer was used to measure the levels of ALB, Hs-CRP, BNP and troponin in two groups of patients, and the expression levels of LVDD and LVEF were detected by cardiac color ultrasonography...

OBJECTIVE: Sexual activity is an important indicator of quality of life and is significantly impaired in patients with heart failure (HF). Cardiac resynchronization therapy (CRT) has positive effects on cardiac dysfunction and endothelial dysfunction, thereby resulting in erectile dysfunction (ED). We aimed to evaluate whether CRT may improve sexual activity in patients with HF. METHODS: In total, 136 patients (mean age, 61.8 ± 12.8 years) were evaluated for the study...

BACKGROUND: PGC-1α is already known as a significant regulator of mitochondrial biogenesis, oxidative phosphorylation and fatty acid metabolism. METHODS: Our study focuses on the role of PGC1a in morbid obesity, based on its immunohistochemical expression in five different tissues, collected from 50 severely obese patients during planned bariatric surgery. The investigated tissues include subcutaneous adipose tissue (SAT), visceral adipose tissue (VAT), skeletal muscle (SM), extramyocellular adipose tissue (EMAT) and liver...

Francesc Formiga, Rafael Moreno-Gonzalez, David Chivite, Sergi Yun, Albert Ariza, Xavier Corbella
BACKGROUND: Systolic blood pressure (SPB) is an acknowledged prognostic factor in heart failure (HF) patients. Admission SBP should be a risk factor for one-year mortality even in elderly patients experiencing a first admission for HF, and this risk may persists in the oldest subset of patients. DESIGN: Methods: We reviewed the medical records of 1031 patients aged 70 or older admitted within a three-year period because of a first episode of acute heart failure (AHF)...

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the protective activity of tanshinone in a rat model of myocardial ischemia-reperfusion and determine its effect on the expression of Bcl-2 and Bax in cardiomyocytes. METHODS: We established a rat model of myocardial ischemia-reperfusion. Rats were randomly divided into blank (no surgery); saline; and low-dose (2 mg/ml), medium-dose (15 mg/ml), and high-dose (50 mg/ml) tanshinone groups. We measured heart rate and troponin (cTnI) levels, performed TUNEL to detect cardiomyocyte apoptosis, and detected LDH and CK-MB activities in serum by ELISA...
