OBJECTIVE: To assess the progress in the field clinical epilepsy in Saudi Arabia, by analyzing in depth the research output productivity and publication pattern, and to identify the current situation of epilepsy research and offer solutions. METHODS: Literature search strategy was designed to retrieve accessible articles that are related to epilepsy utilizing PubMed, Google Scholar, and Embase. The retrieved articles were analyzed with several parameters, then evaluated using Oxford Center of Evidence Based Medicine level of evidence scale...

OBJECTIVE: To explore if renal dysfunction in terms of estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) can be considered a risk factor for stroke outcomes. METHODS: The study population consisted of adults diagnosed with acute stroke admitted to the King Abdulaziz Medical City, Riyadh, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia between 2012 and 2015. Data was collected by chart review. The Modification of Diet in Renal Disease equation was used to estimate GFR. Patients were classified into 2 eGFR categories: eGFR more than 60 (normal) and eGFR less than or equal 60 (low)...

OBJECTIVE: To detect resting-state functional MRI (rsfMRI) changes and their relationships with the clinical curative effect of anti-epileptic drugs (AEDs) for complex partial seizures (CPS) in epilepsy patients using the fractional amplitude of low frequency fluctuation (fALFF). METHODS: rfMRI data from 14 CPS patients enrolled between June 2015 and June 2016 in Department of Neurology, Affiliated Hospital of Inner Mongolia Medical University were retrospectively investigated and compared with findings from 14 healthy age-, gender-, handedness-, and education-matched subjects...

This is case report of a young adult male who had developed Parkinsonism symptoms shortly after severe head injury due to accidental fall. This 45-year-old man was diagnosed as multiple hemorrhagic contusions, sub arachnoid hemorrhage and linear skull fracture. After 4 weeks of fall, he developed Parkinsonian symptoms which were relieved by anti-parkinsons disease medication. After doing thorough journal review only few reports were found regarding short term onset of Parkinsons disease after severe head injury, though most of the literatures evident of the similar symptoms after more than years after the head trauma...

Autosomal recessive hereditary spastic paraparesis is rare.We present 4 patients with slowly progressive predominantly lower limb spasticity and ataxia. Only one patient had family history of ataxia but without any underlying diagnosis. All of them proved negative for the mutation of Spinocerebelalr ataxia genes SCA 1,2,3 and 6. All had mutation in the SPG 7 gene suggestive of autosomal recessive hereditary spastic paraparesis. One of the heterozygous mutatnts showed a novel c1617delC ,p(Val540fs) frameshift mutation in exon 12 of the SPG 7 gene...

Distal catheter migration of a ventriculoperitoneal shunt (VPS) is a rare but serious complication. It is usually asymptomatic. However, it can be further complicated by the presence of co-infections, interruption of the shunt, and/or disturbances in penetrated organ function. In this report, we presented a case of spontaneous complete extrusion of the distal end of a VPS catheter through the intact abdominal wall in a 5-year-old boy with hydrocephalus. We also reviewed and analyzed the literature for similar cases of complete extrusion of the distal end of a VPS catheter, through an intact or a potential weakness in the body wall, in the last 20 years...

Autoimmune encephalitis is rare. Several auto- antibodies are described in autoimmune encephalitis. We describe a case of autoimmune limbic encephalitis associated with positive voltage gated potassium channel (VGKC) antibodies and positive leucine-rich glioma inactivated protein 1 antibodies (LGI1). A 33-year-old Saudi housewife, she presented with 2 months history of cognitive deterioration and recurrent left facio-brachial dystonic seizures followed by generalized tonic clonic seizures. At times the seizures are preceded by rising epigastric aura and shortness of breath...

METHODS: This is a cross sectional study performed in Clinical Neurophysiology Unit, Cairo University, Egypt. It included 2 groups, each of 52 children (one of them with ADHD and the other were normal control). EEG was recorded for every subject during normal relaxing circumstance with eyes opened as well as during TOVA...

Questionnaire was utilized for information about caries risk factors. This cross-sectional study was conducted in Riyadh from December 2014 to May 2015. RESULTS: Fifty-two CP children were examined with mean age of 6.3+/-2.7 years. Only one (1.9%) child out of the 52 had no clinical caries...

Angiitis of the central nervous system (ACNS) is a rather new disease entity that is defined as vascular inflammation limited to the central nervous system and was formally nominated in 1959. Etiologically, it can be divided into primary and secondary ACNS. However, the potential pathogenesis of ACNS remains unclear. The clinical presentation is variable, and there is no consensus concerning its diagnosis and management. Although the incidence is relatively low, ACNS is still a life-threatening condition. It is essential to get a comprehensive and updated understanding of the disease...

Idiopathic intracranial hypertension (IIH) is a neurological condition characterized by increased intracranial pressure without an underlying intracranial pathology. This condition is rarely encountered in men and it predominantly affects obese women of childbearing age. We present an interesting case of IIH in a male patient who presented with acute severe vision loss over 2 weeks and was successfully treated via surgery. Although IIH is less common in men than in women, men are more likely to develop vision loss, which is usually severe and less likely to respond to medical treatment...

Ventricular involvement in central nervous system tuberculosis can be in the form of tuberculous ependymitis, intraventricular tuberculoma, intraventricular tuberculous abscess, choroid plexitis and choroid plexus tuberculoma. Only a few cases of choroid plexus tuberculomas have been described and even more rare is the description of the role of endoscopy in management of intraventricular tuberculomas. We report a 33-year-old patient while on treatment for tubercular meningitis who developed a left side choroid plexus lesion with loculated temporal horn...
