OBJECTIVE: To identify genetic variation involved in primary microcephaly. METHODS: In present study we identified 4 generation Saudi family showing primary microcephaly. We performed whole exome sequencing along with Sanger sequencing to find the genetic defect in this family. This study was conducted in King Abdulaziz University started from 2016 and the results presented in this manuscript are from one of the family. RESULTS: Two novel missense variants (c...

Neuro-behcets disease (NBD) is an uncommon, serious presentation of behcets disease (BD) causing long-term morbidity and mortality. Cerebral aneurysms are rare in BD, with only a handful of cases reported worldwide. A 39-year-old female experienced slurring of speech, numbness, and reduced sensation in the left face, arm, and leg 90 minutes prior to presentation. She provided a history of recurrent oral and genital ulcers associated with intermittent joints pain and blurring of vision. erythrocyte sedimentation rate was elevated, but all other autoimmune workup was negative...

Leptomeningeal cysts, which are cystic collections filled with cerebrospinal fluid, are rare complications following pediatric head trauma and surgical correction of craniosynostosis. These cysts develop due to cerebrospinal fluid pulsations and brain growth that cause expansion of the dural tears. Although primary repair of the dural defect is the definitive treatment, the risk of cyst recurrence remains. Factors that increase this risk include syndromic craniosynostosis, hydrocephalus, increased intracranial pressure, and inadequate duraplasty/cranioplasty...

It is estimated that 6.6%-9.3% of stroke patients have unruptured cerebral aneurysms. The safety of recombinant tissue plasminogen activator (r-tPA) for stroke patients with these aneurysms is uncertain. We report the case of a 58-year old male presented with an acute ischemic stroke within 2 hours of symptom onset and was treated with r-tPA. Further investigation showed that the patient had 2 unruptured cerebral aneurysms. He recovered completely from the stroke and was discharged home in a few days with no deficits...

Colloid cysts are cystic lesions that are usually located in the anterior portion of the third ventricle near the foramen of Monro. Rarely, hemorrhagic cysts can lead to acute obstructive hydrocephalus or sudden death. We herein report 2 cases and a review literature. We examine a 47-year old male who presented with progressive headache and a 55-year old male who presented with progressive memory disturbance and unsteady gait. Both cases demonstrated typical imaging features of hemorrhagic colloid cyst, and were histopathologically confirmed...

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the effects of sensory deficits on balance, functional status and trunk control in patients diagnosed with Guillain-Barre syndrome (GBS). METHODS: Twenty patients who were diagnosed with GBS and who were in the neurology department of Mustafa Kemal University in 2017, participated in this descriptive study. There were 11 males and 9 females, and the average age was 41.55+/-18.49 years. The trunk control of the GBS patients was assessed using the trunk impairment scale (TIS), reaching function was assessed using the functional reaching test (FRT) in the sitting position and body balance assessed using the Berg balance scale (BBS)...

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the treatment approach and compliance of pediatric neurologists with evidence-based guidelines across Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA). These guidelines that clarify the optimal management of infantile spasms (IS) are not widely followed for various practical reasons. METHODS: Physicians practicing in the field of pediatric neurology in KSA were contacted from the database of national societies. A cross-sectional study was conducted using a structured 20-item on-line survey designed to examine their clinical experience with IS and their treatment choices...

Dyke Davidoff- Masson syndrome is a rare disorder of hemiatrophy of the cerebral hemisphere and clinically manifests as hemiparesis, seizures disorder, mental retardation and facial asymmetry and has various perinatal or post natal etiologies and has characteristic radiological appearance on brain imaging. It is important to recognize the clinical and radiological features of this condition for the neurologists as well as the radiologists. We are discussing our case as this patient presented very late although his symptoms seem to present since his birth which is very unusual with this disorder...

Brain abscess is a potentially life-threatening condition requiring rapid diagnosis and prompt medical and surgical intervention. Various etiological agents associated with different epidemiological backgrounds are implicated, including Gram-positive and Gram- negative bacterial agents as well as anaerobes. Salmonella is rarely reported to be the cause of this medical condition despite being known to cause invasive infections at extremes of age and the fact that this organism is a common cause of other clinical infectious diseases encountered in immunocompromised and immunocompetent individuals...
