An unbalanced translocation of chromosome 1 and 7 (t[1;7]) associated with neurological phenotype and brain malformation has rarely been reported. This clinical report describes 3 siblings with brain malformations and a 13.5 Mb duplication of 1q42.3q44, and a 7.6 Mb duplication of 7q36.1q36.3 detected by array comparative genomic hybridization. This unbalanced t(1;7) was found to be inherited from a balanced translocation from the mother. All the patients presented with hypotonia, microcephaly, developmental delay, seizures, abnormal corpus callosum and abnormal cerebellum...

Infarction of the symmetrical middle cerebellar peduncles is often induced by ischemic cerebrovascular disease. Adams described the anterior inferior cerebellar artery (AICA) syndrome as early as 1943, but clinical and imaging studies following this failed to shed more light regarding the condition until the advent of magnetic resonance imaging that comprehension regarding AICA improved significantly. Infarction of the middle cerebellar peduncles (MCP) is uncommon and the endovascular treatment of this condition is even more rare...

Psychiatric symptoms are frequently reported with epilepsy. Anxiety symptoms are the most common psychiatric expressions of temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE). Longer duration of the epileptic manifestation can be mistaken for psychiatric diseases, particularly when psychiatric symptoms are the only manifestations of the disorder. Here we introduce a case of a 27-year-old Saudi man presented to our clinic with a history of sudden and severe anxiety attacks over the prior 2 years, each lasting for 2-3 days. The attacks recurred monthly without clear triggers, and he recovered his normal clinical state between them...

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the effect of K+ channels inhibitors in treatment of parkinson`s disease (PD). METHODS: This prospective comparative study was conducted in the Qazvin University of Medical Sciences, Iran, from April 2015 to January 2016. Male rats (n=37) received intraperitoneal doses of TEA (2 and 5 mg/kg) or 4-AP (0.5 and 1 mg/kg) twice-daily, before a stereotactic injection of 6-hydroxydopamine (6-OHDA) for the following 7 days. The 6-OHDA was injected into right medial forebrain bundle (MFB) of the rat brains...

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate factors affecting cognitive function in internal medicine outpatients. METHODS: A total of 130 consecutive outpatients aged 50-80 years old were included in this cross-sectional study conducted at Okmeydani Training and Research Hospital, Istanbul, Turkey between March and May 2013. Cognitive function was evaluated via Standardized Mini-Mental State Examination (SMMSE) scores. Logistic regression analysis was performed to determine factors predicting poor cognitive function...

OBJECTIVE: To explore the value of neuroendoscopy in surgery for primary hemifacial spasm (HFS) in patients with complicated local anatomy. METHODS: Endoscopic-assisted microvascular decompression (MVD) was performed in 42 patients with HFS with complicated local anatomy from Janurary 2008 to Janurary 2012 in our department, in the event of a significant blind spot, endoscopic exploration was performed with multi-angle 360-degree observation, including exploration of the brainstem facial nerve root exit zone (REZ) and exploration of the distal end of the nerve, and the relationships between blood vessels and nerves were carefully determined...

OBJECTIVE: To describe the various risk factors and identify the characteristics of ischemic stroke in diabetic patients. METHODS: A retrospective study carried out at King Fahd Hospital of the University in Al-Khobar, kingdom of Saudi Arabia from February 2010 to December 2015. Statistical analysis was performed by the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (version 22.0, SPSS Inc, Chicago, IL, USA). RESULTS: One hundred and twenty-seven diabetic patients with ischemic stroke were compared with 127 non-diabetics...

Seizures in children are among the most common neurological disorders. A pediatrician should know how to approach a child who presents with a seizure. This review will focus on points that are important in the evaluation of children who have experienced seizures. A comprehensive and neurologically focused framework for history taking and a thorough clinical examination are the cornerstones in diagnosing and managing seizures. This article reviews the clinical approach to the diagnosis, investigation, and management of epilepsy in children, excluding neonatal seizures...

Iron_sulfur clusters (ISCs) are known to play a major role in various protein functions. Located in the mitochondria, cytosol, endoplasmic reticulum and nucleus, they contribute to various core cellular functions. Until recently, only a few human diseases related to mitochondrial ISC biogenesis defects have been described. Such diseases include Friedreich ataxia, combined oxidative phosphorylation deficiency 19, infantile complex II/III deficiency defect, hereditary myopathy with lactic acidosis and mitochondrial muscle myopathy, lipoic acid biosynthesis defects, multiple mitochondrial dysfunctions syndromes and non ketotic hyperglycinemia due to glutaredoxin 5 gene defect...

This series case report aimed to elucidate the underlying pathology and outcomes of lateral medullary infarction (LMI) using perfusion weighted imaging (PWI). Four patients were diagnosed with LMI based on high-field diffusion-weighted magnetic resonance imaging (MRI-DWI) and PWI. The national institutes of health stroke scale (NIHSS) scores were recorded on days 1, 7, and 30, and the Barthel index was assessed on days 7 and 30. Three patients exhibited relative regional hypoperfusion of medullary lesion in the perfusion maps...

Dermoid cysts are rare, benign lesions of embryological origin that represent 0.1-0.7% of all intracranial tumors. They are mainly located in the supra tentorial space, especially in the parasellar region. Their location in the posterior fossa remains uncommon. Rupture of intracranial dermoid cysts is a rare phenomenon. We present a case of dermoid cyst, which had ruptured into ventricular system. Computed Tomography and MRI revealed fat in the fourth ventricle, prepontine cistern, and cerebellomedullary cistern...

OBJECTIVE: To determine the effects of demographic and clinical characteristics on mobility, disability, and activities of daily life of patients with stroke. METHODS: This cross-sectional clinical study was performed in the Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation in Cukurova University Faculty of Medicine in Adana, Turkey, between February 2011 and December 2011. The study included 126 patients with stroke. The Brunnstrom recovery scale (BRS), functional ambulation classification scale (FACS), modified Barthel index (MBI), modified Rankin scale (MRS), and Rivermead mobility index (RMI) were used in the evaluation of the functional status of stroke patients...
