INTRODUCTION: Purdue Pegboard Test (PPT) is a valid and reliable instrument for measuring hand dexterity among individuals with or without medical conditions. In the Southeast Asia region where Malay is widely spoken, there is a need to have a Malay translation of Purdue Pegboard Test. This study aimed to translate the PPT into the Malay version (PPT-M) and to determine the content validity and test-retest reliability of this translated version. METHODS: This study involved: (1) four English teachers (translators) for forward and backward translation procedures; (2) 10 experts in the field of occupational therapy (expert reviewers) for content validity testing; and (3) 60 undergraduate students (participants) for test-retest reliability testing...

OBJECTIVES: Occupation-based intervention (OBI) involves daily and meaningful activities for evaluation and intervention. Recently, the "aid for decision-making in occupation choice for hand" (ADOC-H) was developed to facilitate OBI in patients with hand injuries. We aimed to examine the efficacy of OBI using the ADOC-H combined with physical function-based interventions (PBI) for patients with distal radius fractures (DRF). MATERIAL AND METHODS: Patients with DRF were retrospectively allocated to two groups, ADOC-H group ( n = 14) and PBI group ( n = 14), and compared...

PURPOSE: To examine the consistency between patient- and occupational therapist-reported judgments of patients' ability and change in ADL abilities. MATERIALS: Patient- and therapist-reported ADL abilities were assessed using a Visual Analogue Scale, whilst the changes in patients' ADL abilities were reported by patients and therapists using a 15-point Likert-type scale. METHODS: Repeated assessments at a 3-week interval were used. 88 inpatients with stroke and 16 occupational therapists were recruited from rehabilitation wards in a medical center...

AIM: To organize a cross-cultural adaptation study and analyze the reproducibility and test-retest reliability of a Brazilian version of the Toddler Sensory Profile 2 (TSP2Br) for children aged 7-35 months. METHODS: The English language version of the profile was translated and culturally adapted into Brazilian Portuguese, administered to 168 caregivers of toddlers aged 7-35 months, and then re-administered to a portion of the sample (39 caregivers; 23%) for 7-14 days for test-retest reliability...

This commentary discusses the concept of 'gamification' as referred to implicitly or explicitly in the occupational therapy literature. Although occasionally noted to be a new frontier for occupational therapy, our analysis suggests that game mechanics and gamification elements are, in fact, a 'road long traveled' by occupational therapists and that gamification evokes the core aims and vision of occupational therapy. Gamification has been implicitly incorporated into the occupational therapy literature for years, and its benefit of enhancing therapeutic outcomes is evident in many instances...

Technological applications in the health field could help meet the needs of patients, including those of women breast cancer survivors. The main aim of this study was to design a mobile phone application "MAIA" focused on the perceived needs of women who have had breast cancer to achieve optimal performance in their daily lives in a meaningful way. Methods: A cross-sectional usability study using an online questionnaire was designed...

INTRODUCTION: While occupational therapy home assessments are effective to identify environmental falls risk factors, patients may not receive these services due to workforce distribution and geographical distances. Technology may offer a new way for occupational therapists to conduct home assessments to identify environmental fall risks. OBJECTIVES: To (i) explore the feasability of identifying environmental risk factors using smartphone technology, (ii) develop and pilot a suite of procedures for taking smartphone images and (iii) examine the inter-rater reliability and content validity between occupational therapists when assessing smartphone images using a standardised assessment tool...

Introduction: Cooperation among rehabilitation team members is essential in the home-based rehabilitation setting. Q-methodology that can quantitatively analyze the subjectivity of members of the rehabilitation team was used to explore the role of occupational therapists (OTs) in home-based rehabilitation. Methods: The Q-methodology process was implemented in five steps: Step 1 - Representative statements about the role of OTs were collected through in-depth interviews, open questionnaires, and literature reviews (Q-sample); Step 2 - A total of 34 rehabilitation team members (physical therapists, OTs, social workers, nutritionists) were recruited (P-sample); Step 3 - The statements were classified according to their subjective perspective (Q-sort); Step 4 - Factor analysis was performed based on the correlation among the responses from the participants (Q-factor analysis); Step 5 - The awareness factor for roles was interpreted (Interpretation of awareness factors)...

BACKGROUND: Sleep problems are a health issue worldwide. Based on the Person-Environment-Occupation-Performance model, we developed an occupation-based sleep programme to promote awareness of sleep hygiene factors, promote an environment conductive to sleep, and restructure participation in daytime activities with a focus on occupational balance. METHOD: This study uses a non-equivalent group design to evaluate the effectiveness of an occupation-based sleep intervention among community-dwelling adults with insomnia, when compared with a treatment-as-usual (TAU) group which focused on sleep hygiene, and relaxation...
