These data, the first to explore chaplains' challenges in ending visits/relationships with patients/families, has critical implications for practice, education, and research. Questions arise about the scope/boundaries of chaplains' relationships with patients/families. Interviews were conducted with 23 chaplains who face questions/challenges regarding how to end visits and interactions, including individual conversations and ongoing relationships with patients/families. Chaplains confront uncertainties and rely on verbal- and non-verbal cues to gauge how long to stay with each patient/family, and they are sometimes unsure...

This mixed-methods pilot study explored the psychological and emotional experiences of chaplains and the feasibility, acceptability, and impact of workshops designed to support chaplain well-being. After the workshops, scores on a measure of self-compassion increased, while secondary traumatic stress and burnout scores decreased. Qualitative data reflected the range of experiences of chaplaincy as well as the benefits of the workshops. This pilot study supports further exploration of organizational interventions to promote chaplain well-being...

An expert panel consisting of six mental health chaplains from several European countries was convened to ascertain the specific contribution of mental health chaplains to suicide prevention, and to generate good practices for suicide prevention. Three themes emerged: (1) the importance of timing; (2) fundamental attitudes of the chaplain towards the patient, and (3) appropriate interventions.

Hospitalized individuals in the United States with limited English proficiency (LEP) may experience complications when receiving hospital care. Grounded in the ethical principles of chaplaincy and motivated by the desire to address inequitable health service provision, we developed the Cross-Language Chaplaincy Introduction Guidebook . The Guidebook introduces chaplaincy in 20 different languages with the goal of improving chaplain accessibility. We report on the rigorous development of the Guidebook and how to integrate the resource clinically...

Re-membering is the combination of remembering and bringing something back into membership. Addressing spiritual care for gun-violence requires us to remember our past while allowing the remnants of violence to remake us-our social norms around violence. With collective ownership of our shared context of violence we can reframe our obligation: care is for the community and the social milieu not just for the individual victim or victimizer.

Christian clergy are at risk of experiencing the negative impacts of role-related stress and adversity, especially burnout. The findings reported in this article were derived from a Canadian mix-methods study that collected data through an online survey with 519 clerics, 13 one-on-one interviews, and interpretation panels. Adversity themes identified related to workload, expectations, isolation, and personal challenges with various subthemes for each. These findings are relevant to those providing care to clergy by providing insights into the challenges they face...

The patterns and themes that emerged centered around the changing world of chaplaincy, the administrative role of the leader, and the personal story of the leader. In major world religious/spiritual traditions, death is accepted as a natural end of life and a point of transition into the unknown. In this paper, I reflect on how my personal experience as both a survivor from a Near-Death Experience (NDE) and as a theologian doing pastoral care and counseling. NDEs foster an internal sense of connection to the divine and to something greater or higher than the self which I call as the "Spirituality of Death."

A literature review was conducted to examine the role of spirituality with resiliency in the pediatric workplace. Two themes emerged from the literature review: healthcare practitioners desire to have a sense of belonging at work and the utilization of chaplains is helpful. This study aims to discover how practitioners experience spiritual health in the workplace and identify interventions that enhance resiliency with the challenges of pediatrics. Implications from this study are applied to chaplaincy and research...

Although forgiveness is hard work, it enables individuals who have gone through unfairness and harm outgrow the pain of resentment and hostility to a condition of wellness and health. Still, it is possible that authentic forgiveness, regardless of significant violations may, as a matter of choice occur when the injured have hitherto achieved proficiency with the forgiveness praxis by practicing consistently. This manuscript suggests a brief dispositional forgiveness praxis that permits individuals to achieve experience in forgiving trivial faults on a consistent basis...
