Lichen planus pigmentosus (LPP) is a cosmetically disfiguring condition. Many treatment options are available which are effective in halting the progression of the disease. The treatment of persistent pigmentation is still a challenge. We describe the use of Q-switched Nd-YAG laser in 13 patients with stable LPP using a standard protocol. Most of our patients showed complete to near-complete resolution of pigment without much complications.

INTRODUCTION: Fractionated radiofrequency (RF) tissue tightening is an alternative method to fractionated laser treatment of skin wrinkling, laxity and acne scars, with reduced risk of scarring or persistent pigmentation. The aim of this study was to evaluate and quantify the wound healing process after RF treatment. MATERIALS AND METHODS: 12 patients were treated with a 64-pin fractional bipolar RF device with 60 mJ/pin applied energy. Confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM) examination was performed on day 1, day 2, day 7 and day 14 after treatment...

Auricular keloids are common following ear piercing, infection, trauma, burns, or spontaneously, and they are highly resistant for treatment and are followed by severe cosmetic problems, especially for patients with bulky auricular keloids. The risk of recurrence and the need to return to the normal anatomy of external ear following resection is a challenge to the plastic surgeon. The authors present their experience of treating bulky auricular keloids with surgical excision, followed by immediate postoperative radiotherapy and intralesional steroid injection...

BACKGROUND: Acne keloidalis nuchae (AKN) is a chronic inflammatory disease involving hair follicles of the neck. It is a form of keloidal scarring alopecia that is often refractory to medical or surgical management. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the efficacy of Er:YAG laser in the treatment of AKN as compared to long pulsed Nd:YAG laser. PATIENTS AND METHODS: This study was conducted on 30 male patients with AKN. Their ages ranged from 19 to 47 years with a mean age of 36...

In aesthetic medicine, there has been an ongoing search for an ideal dermal filler to offer zero complication rate. Polycaprolactone-based dermal filler (PCL) has been available since 2009. The purpose of the paper was to present a case of granuloma as a complication of PCL injection, which has not been reported so far by other researchers. A 68-year-old female was injected with PCL. One year later, nodules accompanied by bluish skin discoloration developed within the injection site. Ultrasound and histopathology studies were performed...

BACKGROUND: Currently no study has evaluated the effect of the novel 1064-nm picosecond neodymium-doped:yttrium aluminium garnet laser (ps-Nd:YAG) for reducing Hypertrophic scarring (HS). OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to verify the efficacy and safety of a 1064-nm ps-Nd:YAG in the management of HS. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A retrospective chart review and photographic analysis were conducted on patients treated with a low-fluence 1064-nm ps-Nd:YAG for HS improvement...

BACKGROUND: Halo nevus (HN) is a rare dermatologic disorder characterized by typical whitish rim surrounding an existing melanocytic nevus resembling halo. It is a cosmetic problem that may be linked to vitiligo, and it is advised to remove these nevi in order to avoid development of vitiligo. OBJECTIVES: The aim of the present study is to evaluate the cosmetic outcome after nevus removal and leukoderma dermabrasion with epithelial graft followed by narrow-band ultraviolet B (NB-UVB) phototherapy as management of resistant halo nevi and avoidance of development of vitiligo...

Resveratrol is now being increasingly used in cosmetology and dermatology. This polyphenolic phytoalexin present in large amounts in red grapes and berries has a number of scientifically proven health-promoting properties associated with a positive effect on the cardiovascular system, lowering the concentration of low-density lipoprotein, and the ability to inhibit the cyclooxygenases activity. Additionally, it has antiproliferative, anti-angiogenic, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and antimicrobial properties...

Patients with a history of intravenous drug usage (IVDU) often develop pathognomonic linear hyperpigmented dermatoses near injection sites. This drug use-related pigmentation can be very distressing for patients as they persist for life, are very difficult to treat, and remain a constant reminder of prior drug usage. The difficulty of treatment is due to the location of the deposited material and its exogenous nature. This article reports two cases of linear hyperpigmentation due to IVDU successfully treated using the Q-switched Alexandrite laser...

The present study deals with the evaluation of antiaging potential of carrot seed oil-based cosmetic emulsions. Briefly, cosmetic emulsions composed of carrot seed oil in varying proportions (2, 4, and 6% w/v) were prepared using the hydrophile-lipophile balance (HLB) technique. Coconut oil, nonionic surfactants (Tween 80 and Span 80), and xanthan gum were used as the oil phase, emulgent, and emulsion stabilizer, respectively. The formed emulsions were evaluated for various physical, chemical, and biochemical parameters such as the zeta potential, globule size measurement, antioxidant activity, sun protection factor (SPF), skin irritation, and biochemical studies...

BACKGROUND: Despite various treatments attempts, no prospective studies have compared the different therapeutic modalities for treatment of idiopathic guttate hypomelanosis (IGH). This study aimed to compare the efficacy of CO2 fractional laser (CO₂FL), Er:YAG fractional laser (EYFL), and 0.025% topical tretinoin for treating IGH. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 122 lesions were analyzed from 18 patients (mean age, 70.00 ± 20.00 years). Treatment outcome evaluations included the visual analog scale (VAS) to assess lesion severity, investigator's global assessment (IGA) to assess the extent of improvement, and patient's satisfaction score (PSS)...

OBJECTIVE: To assess the effects of galvano-puncture (GG) and dermabrasion (DG) in reducing striae distensae in the gluteal region of women. METHODS: This randomized, controlled, single-blind clinical trial was conducted at the UNIFAL-MG. Participants were 48 female who had striae distensae alba in the gluteal region. They were randomly divided in GG; DG; and Control Group (CG). The length and width of the largest striae were measured (in millimeters) using a caliper...

BACKGROUND: With the introduction of new injectable filler substances and the discontinuation of others, the combination of different types of fillers in a same area is more likely to happen. Naturally, a growing number of concerns regarding the combining of different types of fillers in single area may increase the risk of adverse reactions. Therefore, it has been recommended not to inject a filler in an area previously injected with another type of a filler, especially if that filler is a permanent filler...

BACKGROUND: Because of long-term exposure of skin, skin aging is an unavoidable natural law with age. Traditional Vitamin A and novel ablative fractional laser technique both have the effects of skin rejuvenation, and studies have demonstrated both of them have apparent clinical efficacy and histology-improving effects on photo-aging skin. MATERIALS AND METHODS: 45 female healthy Wistar rats were selected and the depilation areas of every rat were divided into four regions: control region(Region A), Vitamin A acid region(Region B), combination treatment region(Region C), and fractional laser region(Region D)...

BACKGROUND: Nevus of Ota can be treated successfully using the Q-switched (QS) laser; but few studies are long-term retrospective of the efficacy and influencing factor, studies on the recurrence is even less. PURPOSE: Retrospective analysis of the clinical characteristics and recurrence of QS Nd:YAG laser treatment of nevus of Ota in 224 Chinese patients at Laser Cosmetology Center of Department of Dermatology, the Second Hospital, Xi'an Jiaotong University. METHODS: The data of 224 patients with nevus of Ota were analyzed retrospectively, which included the correlation among lesion color, treatment sessions, gender, age, lesion types and effect, and all patients were followed up for 2-10 years...
