To improve the ε-PL production in wild-type strains of Streptomyces. albulus, Streptomyces. noursei, Streptomyces. rochei and Streptomyces. yunnanensis, the interspecific hybridization based on protoplast fusion was first performed. Two-species hybridizations failed to obtain hybrids with significant increase in ε-PL production, but four-species hybridizations succeed in acquiring many high-yield hybrids. 16S rDNA homology alignment and RAPD confirmed that the hybrid HX17 was restructured by integrating gene fragments from S...

Heme, found in hemoproteins, is a valuable source of iron, an essential mineral. The need for an alternative hemoprotein source has emerged due to the inherent risks of large-scale livestock farming and animal proteins. Corynebacterium glutamicum, regarded for Qualified Presumption of Safety or Generally Recognized as Safe, can biosynthesize hemoproteins. C. glutamicum single-cell protein (SCP) can be a valuable alternative hemoprotein for supplying heme iron without adversely affecting blood fat levels. We constructed the chemostat culture system to increase hemoprotein content in C...

Biological conversion of waste methane to biodegradable plastics is a way of reducing their production cost. This study addresses the computational modeling of the growth phase reactor of the process of polyhydroxybutyrate production. The model was used for investigating the effect of gas recycling and inlet gas retention time on the reactor performance. The model was run by the use of a genome-scale metabolic network of Methylocystis hirsuta in a dynamic flux balance analysis framework. The reactor has been modeled for two separate feeding scenarios: a pure methane feed and a biogas feed...

Plant microbial fuel cells (PMFCs) has important value for soil remediation and power generation. To improve the performance of PMFCs, a PMFC experimental system was established based on potted scindapsus aureus. Polyaniline (PANI) and sodium alginate (SA) were used as modifiers to prepare PANI-SA modified carbon felt anode. The soil remediation ability and electricity generation ability of PMFCs with four different anodes were compared and analyzed. The experimental results show that the steady-state voltage, the removal rate of hexavalent chromium, and the total chromium removal rate of PMFC using PANI-SA modified anode were 5...

Bioanalytical characterization techniques such as X-ray diffraction (XRD) and field emission scanning electron microscope (FESEM) confirmed the formation of crystalline ZnO NPs with average sizes of 40 nm. The AS-ZnO NPs antimicrobial activity was analyzed under dark (D) and white light (WL) conditions. In tropical regions, the viability of outdoor photo-fermentative biohydrogen production faces challenges arising from elevated temperatures and varying light intensity. This research aimed to explore how high temperatures and outdoor environments impact both biohydrogen production and the growth of purple non-sulfur bacteria. Our findings revealed the potential of Rhodopseudomonas spp. as a robust outdoor hydrogen-producing bacteria, demonstrating its capacity to thrive and generate biohydrogen even at 40 °C and under fluctuating outdoor conditions...

The calorific value of post-fermentation biogas is a way down below standard and quite low due to the presence of high amount level of carbon dioxide (CO2 ) biogas mixture. Therefore, it raises the need to process the biogas, separating it from CO2 in order to obtain high-purity biogas as well as to maximize its calorific value. One widely available material that can be used as a sustainable carbon capture adsorbent is silica extracted from bamboo leaves. However, so that silica can act as CO2 adsorber, it is necessary to modify the surface of silica with CTAB and APTES (3-aminopropyl triethoxysilane)...

Use of white-rot fungi for enzyme-based bioremediation of wastewater is of high interest. These fungi produce considerable amounts of extracellular ligninolytic enzymes during solid-state fermentation on lignocellulosic materials such as straw and sawdust. We used pure sawdust colonized by Pleurotus ostreatus, Trametes versicolor, and Ganoderma lucidum for extraction of ligninolytic enzymes in aqueous suspension. Crude enzyme suspensions of the three fungi, with laccase activity range 12-43 U/L and manganese peroxidase activity range 5-55 U/L, were evaluated for degradation of 11 selected pharmaceuticals spiked at environmentally relevant concentrations...

To improve the methanogenic efficiency of lignite anaerobic fermentation and explore innovative approaches to sludge utilization, a co-fermentation technique involving lignite and sludge was employed for converting biomass into biomethane. Volatile suspended solids were introduced as a native enrichment of the sludge and mixed with lignite for fermentation. The synergistic fermentation mechanism between sludge and lignite for biomethane production was analyzed through biochemical methane potential experiments, measurement of various parameters pre- and post-fermentation, observation of bacterial population changes during the peak of reaction, carbon migration assessment, and evaluation of rheological characteristics...

The use of pesticides and the subsequent accumulation of residues in the soil has become a worldwide problem. Organochlorine (OC) pesticides have spread widely in the environment and caused contamination from past agricultural activities. This article reviews the bioremediation of pesticide compounds in soil using microbial enzymes, including the enzymatic degradation pathway and the recent development of enzyme-mediated bioremediation. Enzyme-mediated bioremediation is divided into phase I and phase II, where the former increases the solubility of pesticide compounds through oxidation-reduction and hydrolysis reactions, while the latter transforms toxic pollutants into less toxic or nontoxic products through conjugation reactions...

The anaerobic treatment of sulfide-containing organic wastewater (SCOW) is significantly affected by pH, causing dramatic decrease of treatment efficiency when pH deviates from its appropriate range. Fe0 has proved as an effective strategy on mitigating the impact of pH. However, systematic analysis of the influence mechanism is still lacking. To fill this gap, the impact of different initial pH values on anaerobic treatment efficiency of SCOW with Fe0 addition, the change of fermentation type and methanogens, and intra-extracellular electron transfer were explored in this study...

Sophorolipid (SL) production by Candida catenulata from sunflower fatty acids was studied in a bubble column reactor (BCR). The specific oxygen uptake rate was 0.021 mg gcell -1 min-1 which indicates the importance of aeration in SL biosynthesis. The measurement of oxygen transfer rate (OTR) in the BCR showed a satisfactory OTR value of about 0.093 min-1 in the system. However, further SL production was stopped after 30 h in the BCR mainly due to the product accumulation in the culture and its inhibitory effects on cell growth and SL synthesis...

The green synthesis of AgNPs was confirmed by the surface plasmon resonance band at 453 nm in a UV-Visible analysis. The formulated AgNPs had a diameter of around 99.72 nm with a spherical shape. Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectrum revealed the bio-reducing potential of phytochemicals present in D. grandiflora, which fundamentally influenced the synthesis of AgNPs. Zeta potential, dynamic light scattering (DLS), scanning electron microscopic (SEM), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopic (EDX), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and transmission electron microscopic (TEM) analyses were executed to reveal the physicochemical attributes of the AgNPs...

Transient gene expression system is an important tool for rapid production of recombinant proteins in Chinese hamster ovary (CHO) cells. An effective approach through which to obtain high protein yield involves targeting transcriptional, post-transcriptional events (PTEs), and culture conditions. Here, we investigated the effects of protein disulfide isomerase (PDI) and spliced X-box binding protein 1 (XBP-1s) co-overexpression combined with mild hypothermia on the transient yields of recombinant proteins in CHO cells...
