We investigates the effect of the anchor area on the mechanical strengths of infrazygomatic mini-implants. Thirty mini-implants were divided into three types based on the material and shape: Type A (titanium alloy, 2.0×12 mm), Type B (stainless steel, 2.0×12 mm), and Type C (titanium alloy, 2.0×11 mm).The mini-implants were inserted at 90° and 45° into the artificial bone to a depth of 7 mm, without predrilling. The mechanical strengths [insertion torque (IT), resonance frequency (RF), and removal torque (RT)] and the anchor area were measured...

The aim of the study was to evaluate the relationship between patient's age and biochemical recurrence (BCR) after radical retropubic prostatectomy (RRP). Data from RRP applied to 305 patients with clinically localized prostate cancer were included in the study. Patients were divided into the three age groups, < 60 years, 60-70 years, and > 70 years. The groups were compared regarding adverse pathological findings on RRP specimen, BCR, and biochemical recurrence-free survival (bRFS) rates. The rates of positive surgical margin, seminal vesicle invasion, lymph node involvement, RRP specimens' Gleason score, and BCR were not significantly different among the three age groups...

Matrix metalloproteinase (MMP) and tissue inhibitors of metalloproteinase (TIMP) have a significant role in tissue remodeling related to cardiac function. In earlier studies, MMP-7 A-181G (rs11568818), C-153T (rs11568819), C-115T (rs17886546), and TIMP-2 G-418C (rs8179090) polymorphisms have been studied in various diseases. However, association between coronary artery disease (CAD) and these polymorphisms has been poorly studied. The goal of this study is to investigate the association of CAD and myocardial infarction (MI) with MMP-7 or TIMP-2 polymorphisms...

Despite advances in understanding of peripheral nerve injuries and regeneration and advances in surgical techniques, successful outcomes cannot be guaranteed after reconstructive surgery. Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) has been reported to have positive effects on nerve regeneration, as well as on tissue healing. The present study was designed to evaluate the effect of PRP on nerve-grafted defects. Sprague-Dawley rats were divided into four surgery groups (n=7 in each). A 1-cm long nerve defect was created in the upper thigh and then reconstructed using a nerve autograft in all groups...

Achyranthes bidentate Blume (Niuxi) is often employed for treatment of arthritis in Traditional Chinese Medicine and possesses anti-inflammatory properties. Phytochemical and pharmacological studies proved the oleanane-type saponins to be the main bioactive principles. In the present study, protective effects of A. bidentata saponins (ABS) on inflammation and apoptosis in interleukine-1β (IL-1β)-induced chondrocytes were investigated. Rat chondrocytes were pretreated with ABS at 3 μg/mL, 10 μg/mL, and 30 μg/mL, and subsequently stimulated with IL-1β (10 ng/mL)...

Treatments with pegylated interferon/ribavirin (PEG-IFN/RBV) has been standard-of-care in patients with chronic hepatitis C virus (HCV) (CHC) infection and reimbursed in Taiwan. However, the actual cost-effectiveness remains unclear. We aimed to evaluate a real-world cost-effectiveness for CHC patients treated with PEG-IFN/RBV by using a clinical cohort with linkage to the National Health Insurance Research Database of Taiwan. The total and itemized medical-care expenses of outpatient visits of 117 treatment-naïve CHC patients with linkage to the two million sampling of the National Health Insurance Research Database were collected...

This study was proposed to compare the clinical effectiveness of mini-tract percutaneous nephrolithotomy (MPCNL) with standard-tract percutaneous nephrolithotomy (SPCNL) and verify whether MPCNL is associated with both higher renal pelvic pressure (RPP) and incidence of postoperative fever. A total of 228 patients with kidney stone were randomly allocated to the MPCNL group (n=114) and SPCNL group (n=114). Both intraoperative and postoperative indexes along with the incidence of complications were compared between the two treatment groups...

Keloid disease (KD) is a benign fibroproliferative scarring condition of unknown etiopathogenesis. Plasminogen activator inhibitor-1 (PAI-1) and vitamin D receptor (VDR) have been shown to play important roles in the progression of tissue fibrosis; therefore, both these genes are potential susceptibility genes for KD. We aimed to determine whether the gene expression levels of PAI-1 and VDR are altered in Chinese KD patients. We measured the expression of PAI and VDR in human peripheral blood lymphocytes in 236 patients with keloid and 219 age- and sex-matched healthy controls by quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction...

Primary spontaneous pneumothorax (PSP) is a common benign problem. However, PSP recurrence is still a troublesome complication for most patients. This study intended to determine the role of matrix metalloproteinase-2 (MMP-2) and MMP-9 in type II pneumocytes of patients with PSP and its relation with recurrence. Ninety-one patients who had undergone needlescopic video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery wedge resection of lung with identifiable blebs for PSP were included in this study. Immunohistochemical (IHC) staining was used to measure the expression of MMP-2 and MMP-9 in lung tissues of PSP patients...

Arsenic is a well-known toxic element and carcinogenic agent. The aim of this study was to investigate p63, E-cadherin, and β-catenin proteins in urothelial carcinoma (UC) in both arsenic contaminated areas [so-called blackfoot disease (BFD) area] and non-BFD areas. The expressions of p63, E-cadherin, and β-catenin proteins in 20 UC cases of blackfoot disease and 22 UC cases in non-BFD areas were detected using immunohistochemical methods. The results revealed a high p63 expression in 20 (47.6%) UC cases and high E-cadherin expression in six (14...
