REVIEW
Jonathan Schwartz, Muh-Yong Yen
BACKGROUND: Over time, as newly emerging infectious diseases have become increasingly common and more easily spread, it has become clear that traditional response mechanisms have proven inadequate to the task of prevention and control. PURPOSE: To explore whether enhanced cooperation with local government and community institutions can effectively supplement traditional state-centric public health epidemic responses. METHODS: Drawing on Taiwan as a case study, we assess the role of the whole-of-society approach to epidemic response as arises from the collaborative governance literature...

Five isolates harboring qepA were studied by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) amplification and relevant methods. One was determined to be a novel qepA3 from Enterobacter aerogenes, and four involved three qepA1 and one qepA2 determinants from Escherichia coli; the qepA3 changed five amino acids. These results characterized genetic structures A, B, C, D, and E.

BACKGROUND/PURPOSE: French Polynesia is an overseas territory located in the South Pacific. The incidence of tuberculosis in French Polynesia has been stable since 2000 with an average of 20 cases/y/100,000 inhabitants. Molecular epidemiology of Mycobacterium tuberculosis in French Polynesia is unknown because M. tuberculosis isolates have not been routinely genotyped. METHODS: From 2009 to 2012, 34 isolates collected from 32 French Polynesian patients were identified as M...

BACKGROUND/PURPOSES: Early diagnosis of dengue virus (DENV) infection to monitor the potential progression to hemorrhagic fever can influence the timely management of dengue-associated severe illness. Nonstructural protein 1 (NS1) antigen detection in acute serum specimens has been widely accepted as an early diagnostic assay for dengue infection; however, lower sensitivity of the NS1 antigen-capture enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (Ag-ELISA) in secondary dengue viral infection has been reported...

BACKGROUND/PURPOSE: Activation of cell surface CD30 by immobilized anti-CD30 monoclonal antibodies (mAb) induces strong apoptosis in human eosinophils. This anti-CD30 mAb-induced eosinophil apoptosis is inhibited by the addition of inhibitors of p38, ERK1/2 mitogen-activated protein kinases, and phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase. However, there is little data investigating the role of Bcl-2 and caspases in eosinophil apoptosis induced by anti-CD30 mAb. We sought to determine whether anti-CD30 mAb induces human eosinophil apoptosis via Bcl-2 and caspase pathways...

PURPOSE: A rapid and efficient diagnostic test was developed for the detection of Mycobacterium tuberculosis antigens in serum samples of active tuberculosis (TB) and extrapulmonary TB patients via a liposomal agglutination-based method. METHODS: A rapid card test has been developed to facilitate the recognition of high-affinity binding rabbit raised purified culture filtrate protein antibodies coupled on the surface of activated liposomal preparation. In the presence of TB antigens, the polyclonal antibodies bound to the liposomal particles demonstrate a visible agglutination reaction...

BACKGROUND/PURPOSE: We conducted a case series study to review the epidemiology of human influenza A(H7N9) infection reported in Hong Kong. METHODS: We reviewed case records of confirmed human cases of influenza A(H7N9) infection reported in Hong Kong in the 2013-2014 winter season. We compared the median viral shedding duration and interval from illness onset to initiation of oseltamivir treatment between severe and mild cases. We estimated the incubation period of influenza A(H7N9) virus from cases with a single known date of poultry exposure...

BACKGROUND/PURPOSE: Leishmania (L.) tropica is the causative agent of different forms of human leishmaniasis. There is little information about the role of Leishmania-specific antibodies in the immune response against L. tropica infection. The aim of this study is to evaluate the role of Leishmania-specific antibodies and their immunoglobulin G (IgG) isotypes in L. tropica infection. METHODS: L. tropica at two different doses (high dose, 10(6) parasites/mouse and low dose, 10(3) parasites/mouse) were used for infection of BALB/c mice...

BACKGROUND: Although malaria control programs have made rapid progress recently, they neglect important social and behavioral factors associated with the disease. Social, political, and cultural factors are involved in malaria control, and individuals in a community may be comfortable in behaving in ways that, to an outsider, may seem contrary to commonly held perceptions. Malaria control efforts can no longer afford to overlook the multidimensional human contexts that create and support varying notions of malaria and its prevention, treatment, and control...

BACKGROUND/PURPOSE: Efflux pumps are one of the major mechanisms of antimicrobial resistance in Acinetobacter baumannii. This study aimed to understand the distribution of different types of pump genes in clinical isolates of multidrug-resistant A. baumannii (MDRAB) and to reveal the relationship between their presence and expression with antimicrobial resistance. METHODS: MDRAB isolates were collected from five hospitals in Taiwan. Different categories of pump genes, including adeB, adeJ, macB, abeM, abeS, emrA-like, emrB-like, and craA, were chosen, and their presence in the collected isolates was determined...

BACKGROUND: Bartonella henselae is the etiologic agent of cat-scratch disease. B. henselae infections are responsible for a widening spectrum of human diseases, although often symptomless, ranging from self-limited to life-threatening and show different courses and organ involvement due to the balance between host and pathogen. The role of the host immune response to B. henselae is critical in preventing progression to systemic disease. Indeed in immunocompromised patients, such as solid organ transplant patients, B...

BACKGROUND/PURPOSE: Helicobacter pylori-induced gastric mucosal inflammation is mediated by proinflammatory and anti-inflammatory cytokines. Polymorphisms in genes that code cytokines influence cytokine secretion levels and appear to contribute to the risk of gastric diseases. In this sense, we performed this study to identify the polymorphisms in the IL-6, IL-8, and IL-10 genes and their associations with H. pylori infection and gastric pathologies. METHODS: Gastric biopsy samples of 151 patients infected with H...
