BACKGROUND/PURPOSE: Total knee arthroplasty (TKA) improves the patient's quality of life by relieving pain, correcting the deformity, and helping the patient resume normal activities. However, post-TKA prosthetic joint infection leads to implant failure, is difficult to treat, and causes a significant burden both economically and health-wise. Therefore, an understanding of the current trends in this infection and microbiology data is essential for preventing and treating it. METHODS: A retrospective study was conducted on 10,768 patients who underwent primary TKA at Taipei Veterans General Hospital, Taiwan, from 2002 to 2014...

BACKGROUND: Adenovirus infections are very common in children and sometimes fatal. Immune responses and hypercytokinemia are related to disease severity in patients with adenovirus infection. Understanding of viral replication and immune responses could help elucidate the immunopathogenesis of severe adenovirus infections. METHODS: Polarized human airway epithelial cells (hAECs) were set up to mimic human airway, and we conducted high (1 the multiplicity of infection, MOI) and low dosage (0...

BACKGROUND/PURPOSE: Dengue disease is widespread in tropical and sub-tropical regions. Severe dengue infection is characterized by plasma leakage, fluid accumulation, severe bleeding, or vital organ impairment. Bleeding is a critical complication of dengue disease. However, the biomarkers of dengue disease are still unknown. Macrophages have a distinct polarization phenotype related to M1/M2 classification. Macrophage polarization toward the pro-inflammatory M1 phenotype is considered critical for efficient antiviral immune responses, whereas the anti-inflammatory M2 phenotype is considered essential for tissue remodeling...

BACKGROUND/PURPOSE: Bacteremia portends high rates of morbidity and mortality. Although 18 F-fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography and computed tomography (18 F-FDG PET/CT) imaging has clinical value in assessing fever of unknown origin, its usefulness in bacteremia has not been entirely elucidated. We therefore designed the current single-center retrospective study to investigate 1) the clinical value of 18 F-FDG PET/CT imaging in assessing bacteremia and 2) the association between laboratory data and imaging findings...

BACKGROUND: Mycobacterial infections are important and potentially life-threatening complications after organ transplantations. Notably, for the recipients of allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT), there are a few supporting results to explore post-transplant mycobacterial infections. Taiwan is a high endemic area of the infection. We aim to investigate the incidence, risk factors, and survival of post-transplant mycobacterial infections, including mycobacterium tuberculosis (MTB) and non-tuberculous mycobacterium (NTM)...
