The non-pathogenic β-proteobacterium Cupriavidus necator has the ability to switch between chemoorganotrophic, chemolithoautotrophic and electrotrophic growth modes, making this microorganism a widely used host for cellular bioprocesses. Oxygen usually acts as the terminal electron acceptor in all growth modes. However, several challenges are associated with aeration, such as foam formation, oxygen supply costs, and the formation of an explosive gas mixture in chemolithoautotrophic cultivation with H2 , CO2 and O2 ...

Polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) is an endocrinal disorder characterized by multiple tiny cysts, amenorrhea, dysmenorrhea, hirsutism, and infertility. The current diagnostic tools comprise of expensive, time-consuming ultrasonography to serological test, which have low patient compliance. To address these limitations, we have developed a highly sensitive, cost effective and ultrafast immunosensor for the diagnosis of PCOS. Herein, we have fabricated a 2-D electro conductive composites of reduced Graphene oxide (rGO), Molybdenum disulfide (MoS2 ), and Polyaniline (PANI) as electrode material...

The primary objective of this study is to elucidate the synergistic effect of an exogenous redox mediator and carbon starvation on the microbiologically influenced corrosion (MIC) of metal nickel (Ni) by nitrate reducing Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Carbon source (CS) starvation markedly accelerates Ni MIC by P. aeruginosa. Moreover, the addition of exogenous riboflavin significantly decreases the corrosion resistance of Ni. The MIC rate of Ni (based on corrosion loss volume) is ranked as: 10 % CS level + riboflavin > 100 % CS level + riboflavin > 10 % CS level > 100 % CS level...

Electrochemical immunosensors have gained considerable attention in detecting human disease markers due to their excellent specificity, high sensitivity, and facile operation. Herein, a rational-designed sandwich-type electrochemical immunosensor is constructed for the sensitive detection of cardiac troponin I (cTnI) using nitrogen-doped carbon nanotubes loaded with gold nanoparticles (Au NPs/N-CNTs) as substrate and highly active mesoporous palladium-nitrogen nanocubes (meso-PdN NCs) as secondary antibody markers...

A type of electrochemical biosensors based on magnetic Fe3 O4 /α-Fe2 O3 heterogeneous nanosheets was constructed to detect Tau proteins for early diagnosis and intervention therapy of Alzheimer's disease (AD). Firstly, Fe3 O4 /α-Fe2 O3 heterogeneous nanosheets were fabricated as the substrate to realize magnetic self-assembly and magnetic separation to improve current response, and Fe3 O4 /α-Fe2 O3 @Au-Apt/ssDNA/MCH biosensors were successfully constructed through the reduction process of chloroauric acid, the immobilizations of aptamer (Apt) and ssDNA, and the intercept process of 6-Mercapto-1-hexanol (MCH); the construction process of the electrochemical biosensor was monitored using Cyclic voltammetry (CV) and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), and the factors affecting the current response of this sensor (concentration of Fe3 O4 /α-Fe2 O3 @Au and Apt/ssDNA, incubation temperature and time of Tau) were explored and optimized using differential pulse voltammetry (DPV)...

In this study, a simple, specific and sensitive immunosensor for CEA detection was prepared based on BN nanosheets. Lewis acid-base interaction was sufficient for the immobilization of anti-CEA used as an antibody on the electrode surface without an activation agent. This immunosensor could be used for CEA determination without the need to use any label or secondary antibody. With its epedance-based recognition mechanism, this immunosensor offered a low LOD value of 0.017 ng/mL and a wide measurement range of 0...

Cathodic photoelectrochemical (PEC) analysis has received special concerns because of its outstanding anti-interference capability toward reductive substances in samples, so it is highly desirable to develop high-performance photocathodic materials for PEC analysis. Herein, a Zr-based metal-organic framework (Zr-MOF), MOF-525, is explored as a photoactive material in aqueous solution for the first time, which shows a narrow band-gap of 1.82 eV, excellent visible-light absorption, and high cathodic PEC activity...

Modern biosensing technology plays a crucial role in combating the spread of Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). However, the associated assays remain costly, considering their extensive daily use. In response, we developed a simplified one-step SARS-CoV-2 protease assay that reduces both time and financial expenses. This approach eliminates the need for extra reagents, enzymes, or antibodies. The simplification involves a photo-sensitive Bengal red-tagged substrate peptide, allowing specific cross-linking upon protease-substrate recognition...

Cable bacteria are filamentous, multicellular microorganisms that display an exceptional form of biological electron transport across centimeter-scale distances. Currents are guided through a network of nickel-containing protein fibers within the cell envelope. Still, the mechanism of long-range conduction remains unresolved. Here, we characterize the conductance of the fiber network under dry and wet, physiologically relevant, conditions. Our data reveal that the fiber conductivity is high (median value: 27 S cm-1 ; range: 2 to 564 S cm-1 ), does not show any redox signature, has a low thermal activation energy (Ea  = 69 ± 23 meV), and is not affected by humidity or the presence of ions...

Acetobacter aceti is a microbe that produces corrosive organic acids, causing severe corrosion of industrial equipment. Previous studies have focused on the organic acid corrosion of A. aceti, but neglected the possibility that it has electron transfer corrosion. This study found that electron transfer and organic acids can synergistically promote the corrosion of 2205 duplex stainless steel (DSS). Electrochemical measurement results showed that corrosion of 2205 DSS was more severe in the presence of A. aceti...
