Ganoderma lucidum (Curtis) P. Karst., commonly used in traditional Chinese medicine, is characterized by strong genetic and phenotypic variability that reflects its active components. To preserve such a source of pharmacologically active metabolites, specimens must be collected from different geographic regions and their genetic integrity ensured during storage. To this aim, we tested the effect of ultra-low freezing (ULF) at -120°C on the vitality, mycelial growth rate, and fruiting ability of 3 Italian strains of G...

We investigated the effect of peptone and (NH4)2SO4, used as nitrogen sources in a submerged medium, on the molecular weight and carbohydrate compositions of exopolysaccharides (EPSs) produced by the culinary-medicinal mushroom Pleurotus citrinopileatus. When (NH4)2SO4 was used instead of peptone, it yielded more specific EPSs, producing 32.80 mg EPS/g dry mycelial biomass, but small amounts of EPS and mycelial biomass. These nitrogen sources also resulted in the production of different net charged EPSs, according to crude fractionations on a DEAE Sepharose Fast Flow column...

The genus Pleurotus is the third most commonly produced edible fungi in the world. In addition, species of genus Pleurotus have functional properties such as anticancer, antiviral, antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant activities, which are mainly attributed to phenolic compounds. For these reasons, this study evaluated the productivity and antioxidant activity (AA) of 2 wild strains (white and pink), 2 reconstituted strains (called "BB" and "RR"), and 4 hybrid strains (H1, H2, H3, and H4) of P...

Ergothioneine is an effective antioxidant and is abundant in species of genus Pleurotus. This research focused on developing an ergothioneine extract from P. eryngii and P. citrinopileatus under optimal extraction conditions. The hot-water and 70% ethanol extractions yielded more ergothioneine than microwave, ultrasonic, and autoclaving extractions. Hot-water extraction with optimal conditions-125 rpm at 75°C for 5 minutes-produced P. eryngii and P. citrinopileatus extracts with 0.86 and 3.73 mg ergothioneine/g dry weight, respectively...

A novel protease was isolated from Coprinopsis atramentaria, which is, to our knowledge, the first macromolecule to be purified from this species. The protease, referred to as CAP, was purified through the use of ion exchange chromatography on sulphopropyl-sepharose, diethylaminoethyl-cellulose, Q-Sepharose, and gel filtration on a Superdex 75 column. CAP is a monomelic protein with a molecular mass of 32 kDa. The maximum activity of CAP was detected at pH 7.0 and 50°C. The preferred pH of CAP demonstrated that it was a neutral protease...
