OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the association between visceral adiposity index (VAI) - a novel indicator for the assessment of visceral adipose tissue and prostate enlargement in non diabetic patients. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Four hundred patients who were admitted to the Urology clinic between January and December 2014 with complaints of BPH(benign prostatic hyperplasia )/LUTS(male lower urinary tract symptoms)were enrolled in this cross-sectional study. Patients were divided into two groups according to their prostate volume and international prostate symptom score (IPSS) value...

OBJECTIVE: In this study we aimed to investigate the association between dietary phytoestrogen consumption and prostate cancer in a sample of southern Italian individuals. METHODS: A population-based case-control study on the association between prostate cancer and dietary factors was conducted from January 2015 to December 2016 in a single institution of the municipality of Catania, southern Italy (Registration number: 41/2015). A total of 118 histopathological-verified prostate cancer (PCa) cases and a total of 222 controls were collected...

This study aimed to quantify training parameters and analyze the morphological response of aged muscles submitted to resistance training and anabolic steroids. Aged Wistar rats were divided into groups: C - initial control; CF - final control; CAS - control with anabolic steroid, RT - resistance training, and RTA - resistance training with anabolic steroid. Maximum carried load, absolute and relative loads increased significantly in RT and RTA. RTA demonstrated greater relative load than RT. Average total volume, total climbing volume, relative total volume, relative total climbing volume, and mean climbing volume were similar between groups RT and RTA...

This observational post-marketing study of parenteral testosterone undecanoate (TU) in a non-selected population aimed to: examine the effectiveness of TU as treatment of hypogonadism; record adverse drug reactions (ADR) quantitatively particularly regarding polycythemia, prostate safety and cardiovascular-related metabolic risk factors; and verify whether recommended injection intervals apply to routine clinical practice. Eight hundred and seventy subjects from 259 outpatient units scheduled to visit the clinic six times were included...

BACKGROUND: The etiology of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) has not been well established. The preferred medical treatment for many men with symptomatic benign prostatic hyperplasia is either an α-adrenergic receptor antagonist (α-blocker), or a 5α-reductase inhibitor. Single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) is a powerful tool for successful implementation of individualized treatment. METHODS: Eighteen SNPs associated with drug efficacy in a Chinese population were genotyped in 790 BPH cases (330 aggressive and 460 non-aggressive BPH cases) and 1008 controls...

PURPOSE: To test the psychometric properties of the International Prostate Symptom Score (Hong Kong Chinese version 2) (IPSS) in Chinese male patients with benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) under secondary care. METHODS: A prospective longitudinal study was done by interviewing subjects at baseline, at 2 week after baseline for assessing test-retest reliability and at 26 week after baseline for assessing responsiveness. All subjects were interviewed to complete a structured questionnaire including IPSS, Short Form-12 Health Survey version 2 (SF-12v2) and Depression Anxiety Stress Scale (DASS)...

Treating male lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) by targeting the prostate would have limited effect on overactive bladder (OAB) symptoms. This study assessed perceived symptoms and quality of life (QoL) of male patients with OAB treated with an α-blocker plus solifenacin in daily clinical practice. Male patients aged ≥40 years were included after the decision was made to initiate treatment with an α-blocker for LUTS plus solifenacin for OAB symptoms. The primary endpoint was change in patient perception of bladder condition (PPBC) questionnaire score over 6 months...

METHODS: This retrospective cohort study analyzed claims data collected during the period of 1997-2012 from Taiwan National Health Insurance Research Database. We enrolled 6625 patients who had persistent lower urinary tract symptoms and underwent TURP for BPH...

PURPOSE: We aimed at evaluating androgen status (serum testosterone [TT] and estimated free testosterone [eFT]) and its determinants in non-diabetic elderly men with heart failure (HF). Additionally, we investigated its associations with body composition and long-term survival. METHODS: Seventy three non-diabetic men with HF and 20 healthy men aged over 55 years were studied. Echocardiography, 6-min walk test, grip strength, body composition measurement by DEXA method were performed...

The aging process may cause negative physiological changes. However, exercises as resistance training (RT) have been considered an important intervention to attenuate these changes. Additionally, liver plays an important role in blood glucose homeostasis in exercise. AIM: This study aimed to analyze the effects of RT on the liver components of aged animals. METHODS: Male Wistar rats were divided into two groups: 24 months' group (CONTROL); and group submitted to a progressive RT protocol for 16 weeks (EXERCISE)...

The normal hematological values in various phases of the rat life provide a valuable guide to researchers and could be useful for experimental works. However, database information available on the literature are incomplete. AIM: This study aimed to present normal hematological parameters of young and aged rats. METHODS: Male and female rats were distributed into seven experimental groups with 1, 2, 3, 6, 12, 18, and 24 months of age. Blood samples taken from the tails were analyzed...

BPH associated with LUTS and sexual dysfunction is common. We performed UroLift on 11 patients, average age 71 years (range 56-90). IPSS improved by an average of 9 points post-procedure. Pre-operatively their post-void residuals were 306.3 ml (range 120-499 ml SD [120.6]) and their QMAX was 7 ml/s (range 4-14 SD [2.8] ml/s). Post-procedure the post-void residual decreased by 35.4% at 4 months (mean difference - 106.3 ml). QMAX improved by an average of 1.7 ml/s, which was not statistically significant...

INTRODUCTION: Prediabetes (PD) leads to reduced testosterone (T) in males, but the association between the anabolic hormones and bone mineral density (BMD) remains unknown. OBJECTIVES: We investigated an association between the anabolic hormones and BMD in middle-aged and elderly men with PD. METHODS: We investigated 84 prediabetic and 56 control men. Total T (TT), calculated free T (cFT), and dehydroepiandrosterone sulfate (DHEAS) were measured, and BMD was assessed using DXA methods...

Sarcopenia is one of the prevalent geriatric syndromes that adversely affects the functionality in the older adults. The diagnosis of sarcopenia requires documentation of decreased muscle mass and decreased muscle strength or physical function. The implication of user-friendly and inexpensive methods that could be used to assess sarcopenia in real-life settings is suggested in a recent debate paper. For muscle mass assessment, bioelectric impedance analysis (BIA), and dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) were described as having the same ease for muscle mass assessment in terms of applicability...
