PURPOSE: Sarcopenic-obesity (SO) is associated with low-functional-status and mortality. Few studies evaluated the definition and prevalence of SO. We aimed to investigate the fat-percentage cut-off values for obesity and prevalences of obesity, SO in community-dwelling older adults in Turkey. METHODS: Body-composition was measured using bioimpedance-analysis. Sarcopenia was defined by European-Working-Group-on-Sarcopenia-in-Older-People criteria. Obesity was defined by two different methods, a fat-percentile above 60th percentile (Zoico-method) or a BMI of ≥30 kg/m2 (WHO-definition)...

The aim of this study is to investigate the expression of the luteinizing hormone/choriogonadotropin (LHCG) receptor in the human penis to see, if the luteinizing hormone (LH) effects are possible in the spongious and cavernous tissue of the penis. The number of men with erection disturbances increases significantly simultaneously with the elevated LH concentrations between 40 and 70 years. It is possible that the elevated LH concentrations may influence locally the erectile mechanisms. The precondition for this is the expression of LHCG receptors in the penis...

INTRODUCTION: Even though the role of the phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase (PI3K)/AKT pathways and apoptosis has been well established in prostate cancer, there are no studies regarding alteration in the gene expression of PI3K/AKT pathway and protein expression of apoptotic components and their association with prostate size in Benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). Hence the study was designed to analyze the expression pattern of PI3K/AKT and apoptotic components in patients with BPH. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 27 BPH patients aged between 55 and 75 years were recruited in the study and prostatic tissues were obtained after transurethral resection of the prostate...

Tuberculous mastitis (TBM) is relatively rare disease with an incidence ranging between 0.1 and 4%. Most of the cases are culture negative and often mistaken with chronic benign idiopathic granulomatous mastitis (IGM). It is very crucial to distinguish culture negative TBM from other causes of mastitis as the treatment differs tremendously. We describe here in a young woman originally from India and residing in Qatar; a non endemic area of tuberculosis; for more then fifteen years. She presented with 2 months history of right breast mass, followed by low grade fever, dry cough, headache, erythema nodosum, arthritis, and arthralgia...

OBJECTIVE: We aimed to develop a new screening tool for self-neglect in community-dwelling self-sufficient older adults. METHODS: Istanbul Medical School Elder Self-Neglect questionnaire (IMSelf-neglect) was developed as a screening tool. Community-dwelling, self-sufficient older adults were recruited in a geriatric outpatient clinic (n = 226, 142 female, 84 male). Construct validity was based on social-worker's interview as a gold-standard method. The cut-off threshold for IMSelf-neglect questionnaire was calculated from ROC-analysis using cut-off values that predicted social-worker's opinion whether the older adult has self-neglect...

Acute vasitis is a rare infection of the vas deferens. Clinical presentation and disease rarity can cause difficulty in correctly diagnosing this condition. Adjuncts to aid diagnosis can be used that include ultrasound scan (USS) or computed tomography. We report a unique case of acute vasitis following vasectomy, reversal and subsequent re-do vasectomy diagnosed using USS.

Around 400 million people across the globe will suffer from asthma in the next 10 years. Although most asthmatics use asthma medications regularly, they occasionally visit the emergency department for aggressive treatment amidst family anxiousness. Vitamin D (VD) not only regulates the expression of genes associated with calcium homeostasis, but also the genes associated with cancers, autoimmune diseases, and infection. VD has also non-genomic activities e.g. it is a potentially safe and effective novel strategy for decreasing the asthma episodes and controlling exacerbations...

In the current aging society, the occurrence of the locomotive syndrome, a condition in which the locomotive organs are impaired, is increasing. The locomotive system includes support (bones), mobility and impact absorption (joints and intervertebral disks), drive and control (muscles, nerves), and network (blood vessels). The impairment of any of those systems can lead to a major decrease in quality of life. In recent years, several studies on methods to improve and prevent conditions impairing the locomotive syndrome have been conducted...
