BPH associated with LUTS and sexual dysfunction is common. We performed UroLift on 11 patients, average age 71 years (range 56-90). IPSS improved by an average of 9 points post-procedure. Pre-operatively their post-void residuals were 306.3 ml (range 120-499 ml SD [120.6]) and their QMAX was 7 ml/s (range 4-14 SD [2.8] ml/s). Post-procedure the post-void residual decreased by 35.4% at 4 months (mean difference - 106.3 ml). QMAX improved by an average of 1.7 ml/s, which was not statistically significant...

INTRODUCTION: Prediabetes (PD) leads to reduced testosterone (T) in males, but the association between the anabolic hormones and bone mineral density (BMD) remains unknown. OBJECTIVES: We investigated an association between the anabolic hormones and BMD in middle-aged and elderly men with PD. METHODS: We investigated 84 prediabetic and 56 control men. Total T (TT), calculated free T (cFT), and dehydroepiandrosterone sulfate (DHEAS) were measured, and BMD was assessed using DXA methods...

MATERIALS AND METHODS: Ninety-seven advanced prostate cancer patients receiving maximum androgen deprivation therapy were enrolled in case-control study. Baseline prostate-specific antigen, Gleason Score, bone metastase, nadir prostate-specific antigen, time to nadir prostate-specific antigen, declining slope to nadir prostate-specific antigen, estimated baseline prostate-specific antigen half-time, current prostate-specific antigen, post-nadir prostate-specific antigen time, estimated prostate-specific antigen, estimated decline of baseline prostate-specific antigen as quantitative, and ratio were recorded and calculated...

OBJECTIVE: To study the prevalence of bone mineral density (BMD) and osteoporosis in the distal forearm among Thai men over 40 years of age in Mae Chaem District, Chiang Mai Province, Thailand. METHODS: The subjects in this study were 194 Thai men, aged between 40 and 87 years who resided in Mae Chaem District, Chiang Mai Province, Thailand. Self-administered questionnaires were used for receiving the demographic characteristics information. BMD was measured by peripheral dual energy X-ray absorptiometry at the nondominant distal forearm in all men...

Sarcopenia is one of the prevalent geriatric syndromes that adversely affects the functionality in the older adults. The diagnosis of sarcopenia requires documentation of decreased muscle mass and decreased muscle strength or physical function. The implication of user-friendly and inexpensive methods that could be used to assess sarcopenia in real-life settings is suggested in a recent debate paper. For muscle mass assessment, bioelectric impedance analysis (BIA), and dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) were described as having the same ease for muscle mass assessment in terms of applicability...

Aging males have a decrease in testosterone levels, by which the testosterone treatment may influence in a negatively fashion the liver. AIM: This study aimed to analyze the effects of aging with or without testosterone administration on the liver components of animals. METHODS: Wistar rats were divided into three groups: 20 months' group (G20), 24 months' group (G24), group treated with testosterone for 16 weeks (GT). All groups were sacrificed at 24 months except for G20 that was sacrificed at 20 months...

INTRODUCTION: Inflammation and angiogenesis are known to play a role in the development prostate tumors. The present study was designed to assess the levels of markers of inflammation and angiogenesis like interleukin-17 (IL-17) and angiopoietin-2 (ANGPT2) levels and their association with prostate size in patients with benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). MATERIALS AND METHODS: 42 BPH cases and 42 controls were enrolled in the study. IL-17 and ANGPT2 were estimated in both the groups...

Erectile dysfunction (ED) is one of the most common disorders in male and is often associated with other age-related comorbidities. The aging process affects the structural organization and function of penile erectile components such as smooth muscle cell and vascular architecture. These modifications affect penile hemodynamics by impairing cavernosal smooth muscle cell relaxation, reducing penile elasticity, compliance and promoting fibrosis. This review aims to identify the mechanisms of ED in the penile aging process in experimental and clinical data...

MATERIALS AND METHODS: Men aged > 45 years with LUTS/BPH were randomly assigned to receive sildenafil 25 mg qd (n = 42), bid (n = 41), 50 mg qd (n = 38) or placebo (n = 41) for 8 weeks. Changes from baseline in International Prostate Symptom Score (I-PSS), maximum urinary flow rate (Qmax) and postvoid residual urine volume (PVR) were assessed at week 4 and week 8...

This prospective study aimed to investigate the relationship between metabolic syndrome (Met S) and premature ejaculation (PE) among men. The study included 300 consecutive male patients (53.6 y ± 8.7) who attended the urology clinic (December 2013-September 2014), mostly complaining of renal/ureteric calculi. A diagnostic approach was undertaken to include demographics, clinical features and laboratory investigations of the study subjects. Both erectile function and PE were evaluated using the International Index of Erectile Function (abridged form, IIEF-5) and Premature Ejaculation Diagnostic Tool (PEDT) questionnaires, respectively...

This study investigated the role of testosterone replacement therapy (TRT) in prostate safety and cancer progression. A cohort of 553 patients, 42 treated and 162 untreated hypogonadal men, and 349 eugonadal men were included. Pathological analysis of prostate biopsies examining the incidence and severity of PCa revealed that: 16.7% of treated hypogonadal men had a positive biopsy, a Gleason score of ≤6 in 71.4% and >6 in 28.6% of men, a predominant score of 3 and tumour staging of II in 85.7% men; 51...

The management of prostate cancer in the elderly is a major public health concern in most countries. Currently, most prostate cancers are diagnosed in elderly males. The elderly population is very heterogeneous. Thus, the current challenge is to identify better those individuals for whom specific screening tools and a Comprehensive Geriatric Assessment (CGA) would be beneficial. On the basis of the recommendations of the Prostate Cancer Working Group in the International Society of Geriatric Oncology, older patients with prostate cancer should be managed according to their individual health status and not by their age...

We present a case report of an atypical giant pituitary adenoma secreting follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH). A 55-year-old patient presented for erectile dysfunction, loss of libido and fatigue. The biochemical evaluation showed very high FSH serum levels in the presence of central hypogonadism. Neither testicular enlargement nor increased sperm count was observed, thus a secretion of FSH with reduced biological activity was supposed. The histological examination after neuro-surgery showed an atypical pituitary adenoma with FSH-positive cells...

INTRODUCTION: We aimed to evaluate the association of a decreased glomerular-filtration-rate (GFR <60 ml/min/1.73 m(2)), estimated using Modification of Diet in Renal Disease (MDRD), creatinine- and cystatin C-based (CKDEPI-CR and CKDEPI-CC) Chronic Kidney Disease Epidemiology Collaboration equations with handgrip strength (HGS). METHODS: Community-dwelling males aged ≥60 years admitted to outpatient clinic were included. We used MDRD, CKDEPI-CR, and CKDEPI-CC formulas for GFR estimation and corrected these for body surface area...

OBJECTIVE: We investigated the effects of testosterone replacement therapy (TRT) on bone mineral density (BMD) among hypogonadal men with osteopenia/osteoporosis. METHODS: From our previous EARTH study population, 74 patients with a clinical diagnosis of osteopenia or osteoporosis and hypogonadism were included in this study, as the TRT (n = 35) and control (n = 34) groups.
