X-linked adrenoleukodystrophy (X-ALD) is a genetic disorder associated with peroxisomal dysfunction. Patients with this rare disease accumulate very long-chain fatty acids (VLCFAs) in their bodies because of impairment of peroxisomal VLCFA ?-oxidation. Several clinical types of X-ALD, ranging from mild (axonopathy in the spinal cord) to severe (cerebral demyelination), are known. However, the molecular basis for this phenotypic variability remains largely unknown. In this study, we determined plasma ceramide (CER) profile using liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry...

OBJECTIVE: Patients with lung cancer generally undergo minimally invasive surgery, such as video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (VATS). This study examined the changes in health conditions and symptoms of patients with lung cancer using the European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer-Quality of Life Questionnaire (EORTC QLQ) C-30 questionnaires after surgery. METHODS: This was a longitudinal descriptive study. One hundred and three patients with lung cancer who underwent lung resection at Tokushima University Hospital between 2012 and 2021 were eligible...

This study assessed the validity of dietary balance scores (DBSs) by investigating the association between DBSs and nutrient adequacy (NA) in two Japanese populations. The participants were 65 community-dwelling Japanese from Tokushima Prefecture and 2,330 community-dwelling Japanese from Aichi Prefecture. Based on food frequency questionnaires or 3-day dietary records, we obtained 18 food groups. The NA score integrates nine beneficial nutrients and two nutrients that should be limited. We calculated four different DBSs: DBS1 consisted of five food groups (score range:0?20), DBS2 consisted of nine food groups (score range:0?36), DBS3 consisted of eight food groups (score range:0?32), and DBS4 consisted of 10 food groups (score range:0?40)...

The frequency of resection for the recurrence of colorectal cancer has not been investigated in previous studies. Likewise, the related postoperative complications and the limit for indicating surgical resection has not been reported. Herein, we reported the complications of a highly frequent surgical approach for rectal cancer recurrence, i.e., exceeding three reoperations, based on our clinical experience. We included 15 cases exceeding two operations for the local recurrence of colorectal cancer from 2014 to 2019...

This study investigated the usefulness of [18F]-3'-deoxy-3'-fluorothymidine (18F-FLT) and [18F]-fluoro-2-deoxy-D-glucose (18F-FDG) positron emission tomography (PET)/computed tomography (CT) imaging for predicting the therapeutic efficacy of non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) irradiation at an early stage after radiation treatment. Mice were xenografted with the human lung adenocarcinoma line A549 or large cell lung cancer line FT821. Tumour uptake of 18F-FLT and 18F-FDG was imaged using PET/CT before and 1 week after irradiation...

Pain at the injection site is the most frequent reaction among COVID-19 vaccine recipients, but its characteristics were not fully described yet. The purpose of this study was to investigate multiple domains of pain following BNT162b2 mRNA vaccination. We included 107 subjects undergoing primary shot of the vaccination twice into deltoid muscle with a 3-week interval. They completed 6 sessions of pain assessments, one before the first and second dose (1-0, 2-0), and 1st/7th day after the first and second dose (1-1/1-7, 2-1/2-7)...

THE AIM: Pancreatic cancer, a rapidly progressive malignancy, is often diagnosed in patients with diabetes. The incidence of pancreatic cancer has risen dramatically over recent decades. Early diagnosis of this malignancy is generally difficult because the symptoms do not become apparent until the disease has progressed, generally leading to a poor outcome. To achieve earlier diagnosis, we analyzed the clinical characteristics of pancreatic cancer patients showing deterioration of plasma glucose levels while hospitalized...

Generation of hepatocytes from human adipose-derived mesenchymal stem cells (hADSCs) could be a promising alternative source of human hepatocytes. However, mechanisms to differentiate hepatocytes from hADSCs are not fully elucidated. We have previously demonstrated that our three-step differentiation protocol with glycogen synthase kinase (GSK) 3 inhibitor was effective to improve hepatocyte functions. In this study, we investigated the activation of the nuclear factor erythroid-2 related factor 2 (Nrf2) on hADSCs undergoing differentiation to HLC (hepatocyte-like cells)...

INTRODUCTION: The plate fixation for anterior cervical discectomy and fusion (ACDF) has become increasingly widespread for facilitating early mobilization and improving fusion rate. However, apart from multilevel operations, there is still some controversy over its use for single-level ACDF. This retrospective study has compared the reoperation rates after single-level ACDFs performed at our institution between the procedures with and without plate fixation. METHODS: This retrospective study included a total of 131 patients with???1-year of follow-up after a single-level ACDF, consisting of 100 patients without plating (conventional ACDF) and 31 patients with plate fixation (plated ACDF)...

The effects of early enteral arginine-rich nutrition (EAN) were analyzed among patients undergoing curative-intent total gastrectomy for gastric cancer. There were 19 patients in this prospective study, all randomly assigned to either a parenteral nutrition (PN) group or an EAN group for the first seven days after surgery. The EAN group received 1.8-fold greater arginine (10.1 g/day) compared with the PN group, which was administered through an enteral tube inserted into the jejunal loop. Both groups were provided almost identical amounts of total amino acids (54 g/day), and the total energy was set at 65% of the total requirement (25 kcal/kg/day)...

METHOD: Oocytes without pronuclei at 18 hours after ICSI were judged to be unfertilized and were exposed to the Ca ionophore A23187 (5 ?M) with or without roscovitine (50 ?M). Platelets play an important role in physiological hemostatic mechanisms. In contrast, platelet activation has been implicated in pathological conditions, such as atherosclerosis, angiogenesis, and inflammation. Thrombin is considered to be of particular pathological importance as a platelet-activating substance, and thrombin-activated platelets are detected in the blood of patients with advanced occlusive arterial disease. Ca2+ acts as a second messenger in platelet activation, and the regulation of intracellular Ca2+ concentrations ([Ca2+ ]i) is important for controlling platelet functions...

PURPOSE: Obesity is associated with chronic low-grade inflammation in which is the key in the pathogenesis Insulin Resistance (IR) and Metabolic Syndrome (MetS). Homeostasis model assessment of insulin resistance (HOMA-IR) has been validated as a surrogate measure of IR. The combination of HOMA and adiponectin, known as HOMA-AD was proposed to measure IR in adults. However, study on these indicators in obese adolescents is still limited.
