OBJECTIVES: Aim of this study is to evaluate success rates and complications related with symphyseal miniplate anchorage systems used for treatment of Class 2 and Class 3 deformities. METHODS: A total of 58 miniplates applied to 29 growing patients were evaluated. The first group comprised 24 symphyseal miniplates applied to 12 patients and Forsus Fatigue Resistant Devices were attached to the head of the miniplates for mandibular advancement. The second group consisted of 34 symphyseal miniplates applied to 17 patients and intermaxillary elastics were applied between acrylic appliances placed on the maxillary dental arch and the symphyseal miniplates for maxillary protraction...

PURPOSE: Reconstruction of the facial midplane is relevant in anthropometry, orthodontics, maxillofacial surgery, and the accurate measurement of symmetry deviation is relevant in many fields of medicine especially when planning surgical treatment. In the literature, three different means of midplane generation have been published; however, there is currently no consensus regarding the approach to use. Morphometric methods are used to determine the true midsagittal plane (MSP), but its use in clinical practice is difficult...

OBJECTIVES: A systematic review was performed to assess the prognosis for facial growth direction documented by mandibular plane inclination and anterior face height in growing subjects who had undergone surgical intervention to relieve mouth breathing (PROSPERO database, registration no. CRD 42013005707). METHODS: PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, the Cochrane Library and LILACS were searched based on the guidelines of the PRISMA statement. Included were longitudinal studies with mouth-breathing patients who had undergone surgical interventions to relieve their respiratory pattern, with a minimum follow-up of one year...

AIM: The goal was to evaluate if changes in morphology and topography of the mandibular fossa after Functional Mandibular Advancer (FMA) treatment are detectable on tomograms. Furthermore, the suitability of digital tomograms (DT) over magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) for this particular question was investigated. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In all, 25 patients (14 female, 11 male) with a skeletal class II malocclusion received treatment with a FMA. DTs were available prior to (T1) and after (T2) FMA treatment...

OBJECTIVE: This survey aimed to determine the influence of physician evaluation portals (PEP) on a patient's choice of physicians, particularly orthodontists. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Questionnaires were used to collect sociodemographic data, reasons for orthodontist selection, type of Internet use, as well as information on the knowledge, use and evaluation of 14 popular PEPs. A total of 506 questionnaires were evaluated, and a descriptive statistical evaluation was conducted using the χ2 test...

PURPOSE: The aim of this study is to conduct a kinematic analysis of occupational posture in orthodontists. METHODS: A representative sample of 21 (13 female/8 male) residents in orthodontics and orthodontists was studied. The CUELA system collects kinematic data of the occupational posture. Alongside the kinematic analysis, the tasks performed on-site were also subject to a detailed computerized analysis. Data analysis comprised the evaluation and comparison of joint angle distribution in accordance with ergonomic standards categorized as neutral, moderate or awkward posture...

PURPOSE: To assess the effects of reducing the curing time of a high-power light-emitting diode (LED) unit (Valo, Ultradent, South Jordan, UT, USA) on shear bond strength (SBS) of metal brackets and on the amount of adhesive remnant of two orthodontic composites. METHODS: Eighty human premolars were divided into four groups (G1-4) according to curing time and composite: G1 (Transbond XT, 6 s), G2 (Opal Bond MV, 6 s), G3 (Transbond XT, 3 s), and G4 (Opal Bond MV, 3 s)...

PURPOSE: Human periodontal ligament (hPDL) fibroblasts play a crucial mediating role in orthodontic tooth movement (OTM). In this study, we investigated the expression kinetics of genes associated with OTM in its early phase to obtain better insight into the timing and regulation of molecular and cellular signalling and transformation processes occurring in compressive areas of the periodontal ligament during OTM. METHODS: Adherent hPDL fibroblasts were stimulated with physiological orthodontic compressive forces of 2 g/cm2 for 24, 48, 72, and 96 h under cell culture conditions...

PURPOSE: This study aimed to determine and compare the mechanical properties of novel CAD/CAM(computer-aided design/manufacturing)-individualized nickel-titanium (NiTi) and conventional twisted wires. METHODS: Seven NiTi wires (angular, 0.20 × 0.20 mm up to 0.50 × 0.50 mm) and two twisted steel wires (round, 0.40 mm and 0.44 mm) were investigated in three-point (3PBT) and four-point bending tests (4PBT) using the Orthodontic Measurement and Simulation System...

PURPOSE: Miniscrews are an important choice for orthodontic anchorage. Yet reports on failures do exist, and attempts have been made to elucidate the causes. Clinical outcomes may be compromised not only by the mechanical implications of miniscrew design and the location of anchorage but also by poor biocompatibility. Hence, this study deals with the surface roughness and elemental composition of miniscrews and how these properties may affect the in vitro biocompatibility of four commercially available miniscrews...

PURPOSE: Oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL) is a construct for assessing the self-perceived oral health of patients. The aim of this study was to investigate the correlation between OHRQoL and orthodontic treatment need in consideration of demographic and psychological factors. PATIENTS AND METHODS: This multicentre study included 250 patients with an indication for orthodontic diagnostics. In cooperation with the Institute of Clinical Psychology at the University of Würzburg, validated and internationally acknowledged questionnaires were selected to assess OHRQoL (COHIP-G19) and health-related quality of life (HRQOL)...

PURPOSE: To analyze common values of bracket torque (Andrews, Roth, MBT, Ricketts) for their validity in achieving incisor inclinations that are considered normal by different cephalometric standards. METHODS: Using the equations developed in part 1 (eU1(BOP) = 90° - BT(U1) - TCA(U1) + α1 - α2 and eL1(BOP) = 90° - BT(L1) - TCA(L1) + β1 - β2 ) (abbreviations see part 1) and the mean values (± SD) obtained as statistical measures in parts 1 and 2 of the study (α1 and β1 [1...

OBJECTIVES: To evaluate, by comparing maxillary sinus volumes, how asymmetries related to oculoauriculovertebral spectrum (OAVS) affect upper-jaw development. METHODS: From pre-existing multislice spiral computed tomography (MSCT) datasets, we selected 20 cases of 11 female and 9 male patients aged 6.1-24 years who were clinically and radiographically symmetrical (group 1) plus 20 cases of 8 female and 12 male patients aged 5.7-23.9 years who had OAVS (group 2)...

OBJECTIVES: Malocclusions affect about two-thirds of the population and orthodontic treatment is justified in 65% of these. However, the associations between anterior and posterior occlusal plane (AOP, POP) inclinations and Angle classification are lacking. PATIENTS AND METHODS: In a retrospective study, lateral cephalometric radiograph tracings of 230 previously untreated Caucasians, aged 13 to 49 years, yielded inclines of the bisector occlusal plane, AOP, and POP...
