An autopsy case of caffeine intoxication related to the consumption of caffeinated products, such as energy drinks and caffeine contained drugs, was reported. Case report: A male in his early twenties was working a night shift job. After work one morning he came home and was not feeling well. He was vomiting a great deal and could not move, so his family had him lay down to rest. That afternoon they discovered his death. Although the decedent was examined by postmortem computed tomography, his cause of death could not be determined...

Caffeine-containing drinks are popular daily beverages worldwide and highly concentrated caffeine in the form of tablets is easily obtainable in local chemists. It is common to detect caffeine in toxicological screens in autopsy cases, but we always have to take in account that caffeine itself possesses toxicity which may sometimes lead to death The case was a 44-year-old woman who was found dead in her room one day in June. Empty packages of 'Estaron Mocha 12®, accounting for 14 tablets, were found at the scene...

The purpose of the present review is to explain the mechanism of alcohol-induced asthma in Japanese. An oral ethanol provocation test was performed in Japanese asthmatics to measure pulmonary function, blood ethanol, acetaldehyde and histamine. Acetaldehyde dehydrogenase 2 (ALDH2) genotype was determined by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and ethanol patch test. Human bronchi and mast cells were stimulated with acetaldehyde in vitro. Approximately half of the asthmatic subjects developed bronchoconstriction with concomitant increases in blood acetaldehyde and histamine, which was associated with genetically reduced ALDH2 activities...

Previous researches suggest that addressing alexithymia and emotional dysregulation in patients with alcohol and drug addiction is important. However, interventions focused on emotional problems in Substance Use Disorder (SUD) patients are rare in Japanese hospital settings. In 2014, we developed and implemented an intervention called the Serigaya Collaboration for Open heart Project (SCOP) for those SUD inpatients who have difficulty recognizing and expressing their emotions. The SCOP consists of a series of emotion-focused group psychotherapies provided by psychologist, occupational therapist, and nurse...

Individuals with an inactive acetaldehyde dehydrogenase 2 have an. elevated level of serum acetaldehyde after drinking alcohol, and this may cause an alcohol flushing response with symptoms such as facial flushing, tachycardia, headache, and nausea. Recent studies have suggested that the flushing response influences the association between alcohol consumption and various health-related outcomes. In the present study, we investigated the impact of the flushing response on the relationship between alcohol consumption and serum y -GTP levels in Japanese drinkers...

While many Japanese nationals are considered to have problems with pachinko and pachisuro (Japanese slot machines), the factors contributing to the process by which gambling disorder-is aggravated remain unclear. Therefore, the aim of this study was to establish baseline data for measures to prevent the further escalation of this gambling disorder; To elucidate the contributing factors, a self-administered questionnaire was distributed to pathological gamblers. The survey items were composed of the following basic attributes; scores on the South Oaks Gambling Screen (SOGS); gambling motivation; matters arising, after gambling behavior; remedies for excessive gambling; the Kessler 6 (K6); the CAGE (Cut down, Annoyed, Guilty, Eye opener) questionnaire; and the 8-item Family Adaptability and Cohesion Evaluation Scale at Kwansei Gakuin IV (FACESKGIV-8)...

One of the alcohol-related goals in Japan's health promotion campaign called Health Japan 21 (secondary term) is to reduce the number of high-risk drinkers (20 years old or above) who consume 40g or more pure alcohol/day in men and 20g or more in women by year 2022. To achieve this goal, a further expansion of screening and brief intervention (SBI) in the medical setting is essential. In this research, realistic and cost-effective SBI scenarios in Japan were investigated based on international systematic review and clinicians' opinions from a semi-structured interview...

OBJECTIVE: Assessing the degree of problems related to drug abuse is important in each treatment setting. The Drug Abuse Screening Test-20 (DAST-20) is a brief, simple 20-item instrument to measure the degree of problems related to drug use. The objective of the present study is to examine the reliability and validity of the Japanese version of the DAST-20. METHODS: We translated the DAST-20 into Japanese using back translation. The anonymous self-administered questionnaire was completed by 310 drug users at the Drug Addiction Rehabilitation Centers (DARC group, n = 113) and at HIV/AIDS regional hospitals (HIV group, n = 197) in Japan...

BACKGROUND: Relatively few hospitals can treat substance use disorder in Japan and the options for treatment are limited. Previous studies in the West have shown the effectiveness of brief intervention for substance use disorder. However, such treatment has not been sufficiently implemented in Japan. For this study, we developed brief intervention tools for substance use disorder, and conducted a pilot study to evaluate the efficacy of treatment. METHODS: Participants in this study were recruited from those admitted for substance use disorder in the addiction treatment unit of Tokyo Metropolitan Matsuzawa Hospital, and the recruitment period was from October 2013 through March 2014...

The purpose of this study was to develop an evaluation method for animal-assisted intervention (AAI) programs involving Mood Check List-Short form.2 (MCL-S.2) and the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI) for psychiatric daycare of Japanese alcohol. dependents. A total of 36 alcohol dependents completed the study and questionnaires assessing their state. A single session of AAI reduced both subjective and physiological measures of state anxiety (A-State); and this program induced a significant reduction in the anxiety after an AAI program session with the dogs and cats involved in the intervention (p = 0...

If the conditions including normal-dose dependence in which withdrawal signs are observed in the absence of definite psychic dependence are classified as dependence, this classification should be regarded as inappropriate extension of the concept of drug dependence. These conditions should be diagnosed as 'withdrawal' as specified by the DSM-5 or ICD-10. Advancements of research have clarified that an increased number of drugs cause withdrawal signs. Some Japanese researchers use the concept of 'withdrawal signs of psychic dependence...

The Japanese Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare has focused on enhancing knowldge about the association between alcohol consumption and health, such as early detection of alcohol abuse, the appropriate actions to be taken after detection, and prevention of teenage drinking. They believe that it is necessary to develop and improve the methods for early detection of alcohol-related problems in an easy and effective way. Given this context, we hypothsized that simultaneous determination of osteocalcin (OC) and undercarboxylated osteocalcin ucOC), bone metabolic markers, would facilitate research on the effects of alcohol drinking...

Addiction is described as a chronic neurological disorder associated with plasticity in the mesolimbic system. Recently, it has been suggested that neuroinflammation plays an important role in the induction of neuronal plasticity and the formation of pathogenesis in chronic neurological disorders. Therefore, we examined the role of CC-chemokine ligand 2 (CCL2), a proinflammatory chemokine, in the development of psychic dependence on methamphetamine. In mice treated with methamphetamine, CCL2 mRNA was significantly increased in prefrontal cortex and nucleus accumbens...
