BACKGROUND/AIMS: Pancreatic solid pseudopapillary tumor (SPT) is a rare neoplasm in children. In this study, we aimed to present our surgical strategy based on minimal resection by enucleation or limited resection in localized pancreatic SPT. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed the medical records of children who underwent surgical resection between October 2011 and September 2016. RESULTS: Five female patients with a median age of 15 years (range, 14-17 years) were operated...

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Noninvasive activity markers are extremely important in conditions, such as pregnancy, when endoscopy is not recommended. The aim of this prospective study was to determine fecal calprotectin (FC) concentrations in healthy non-pregnant and pregnant women and in patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). MATERIALS AND METHODS: Healthy pregnant and non-pregnant women and patients with active and inactive IBD were prospectively enrolled in this study...

Upper gastrointestinal bleeding (UGIB) represents one of the most serious conditions of the gastrointestinal tract with a mortality rate of 10%. The main cause of UGIB is peptic ulcer, accounting for 28%-59% of cases. A rare cause of UGIB is submucosal arterial collaterals, which develop after splenic artery thrombosis. UGIB secondary to gastric submucosal collateral arteries should be considered in patients with endoscopic appearance of varicose veins in the absence of portal hypertension. Computed tomography angiography (CTA) is the only fast and noninvasive definitive imaging technique for such patients...

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Distinguishing between neoplastic and nonneoplastic gallbladder polyps (GBPs) in the preoperative workup is of great importance for appropriate treatment. The present study aimed to investigate the characteristics of GBPs and to determine potential predictive factors of neoplastic polyps. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The data of 278 patients who were confirmed to have GBPs through laparoscopic cholecystectomy were retrospectively analyzed. Polyps were classified as nonneoplastic and neoplastic GBPs, according to histopathological diagnoses...

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) infection can be a predisposing condition for the development of squamous cell papilloma (SCP) of the esophagus, which can progress to dysplasia and to carcinoma as a result of chronic infection. The aim of the present study was to search for the presence of HPV in the esophageal SCP, and to genotype the detected HPV. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Data from patients with definite diagnosis of SCP of the esophagus were identified from pathology records for two years period at different Hospitals...

BACKGROUND/AIMS: The critical flicker frequency (CFF) and psychometric hepatic encephalopathy score (PHES) are commonly proposed tests for detecting minimal hepatic encephalopathy (MHE); however, no studies have examined their value for detecting MHE in Turkey. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 70 patients with cirrhosis without overt HE, 205 controls for PHES, and 100 controls for the CFF test were included. All the patients underwent the PHES and CFF tests during the same session...

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Bloating is an unpleasant but common gastrointestinal symptom that is experienced by many people at some stage in their lives. The current survey was conducted to investigate the epidemiology and risk factors of bloating and functional bloating (FB). In addition, we aimed to assess the association between bloating and functional gastrointestinal disorders (FGIDs). MATERIALS AND METHODS: In this cross-sectional study, the self-administered modified Rome III questionnaire was used to assess gastrointestinal symptoms and FGIDs...

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Acute pancreatitis (AP) is an acute inflammatory disorder of the pancreas, and its severe form affects nearly all systems of the body. The purpose of this study is to assess the Ranson score and the C-reactive-protein level as a novel model for prediction of the disease severity and mortality. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A prospective cohort study was designed to evaluate the efficacy of the C-reactive-protein for the prediction of severe AP. We recorded the Ranson score and C-reactive-protein values in AP patients and determined the severity of the disease using the revised Atlanta classification...

BACKGROUND/AIMS: This study's purpose was to compare the efficacy of CO2-enhanced ultrasonography (US) with that of Sonazoid-enhanced US and conventional US in detecting local tumor residue after percutaneous radiofrequency (RF) ablation therapy for hepatocellular carcinoma. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Between February 2009 and March 2010, 141 lesions of 121 hepatocellular carcinoma patients were treated by percutaneous RF ablation, and 22 tumor residues were detected in 22 patients by contrast-enhanced computed tomography...
