BACKGROUND/AIMS: Endoscopic balloon dilation (EBD) can serve as an alternative to surgery for intestinal stenosis associated with Crohn's disease (CD). However, there has been controversy regarding the efficacy and safety of EBD. Here we sought to determine the therapeutic efficacy and safety of EBD for intestinal stenosis in CD. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Of 43 patients with CD accompanied by intestinal stenosis, 30 underwent EBD. These 30 patients were examined retrospectively in terms of the scope passage rate, surgery-free rate, and whether or not the observation of the distal intestinal tract influenced the therapeutic strategy...

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Similar autonomic innervation of the esophagus and left atrium with sympathovagal imbalance seems to explain the association between non-valvular atrial fibrillation (AF) and gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). We aimed to assess this association via parameters of heart rate variability in time (SDNN) and frequency (low-frequency (LF)/high-frequency (HF) ratio) domains by 24-hour electrocardiographic (ECG) Holter monitoring. MATERIALS AND METHODS: One hundred thirty-five patients were prospectively included by a joint team consisting of a gastroenterologist and a cardiologist on the basis of the patients' complaints...

BACKGROUND/AIMS: The significance of hypergammaglobulinemia as a phenotypic feature of inflammatory bowel disease is unknown. Thus, we aimed to analyze the magnitude and significance of hypergammaglobulinemia in newly diagnosed pediatric inflammatory bowel disease patients. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The medical records of 296 pediatric onset inflammatory bowel disease patients who were evaluated from 2002 to 2015 were retrospectively reviewed. Patients with recorded immunoglobulin G (IgG) levels were categorized as either normal or high IgG levels at diagnosis...

BACKGROUND/AIMS: The Helicobacter pylori prevalence has been decreasing in many parts of the world. This study aimed to investigate the current epidemiological status of H. pylori infection in urban China. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The study included 51,299 subjects aged ≥18 years who underwent health checkups between April 2013 and June 2016 in a city of China. H. pylori infection was determined by detecting H. pylori urease-IgG antibodies. Statistical analyses included chi-square tests for trends and curve fitting...

Iron deficiency (ID) and iron deficiency anemia (IDA) are important signs of gastrointestinal (GI) hemorrhage. Therefore, the evaluation of the GI tract should be a part of the diagnostic protocol in patients with IDA. GI hemorrhage is not a disease but a symptom, which might have different underlying causes. ID and IDA have significant negative impacts on the life quality and work ability, and they may lead to frequent hospitalization, delay of discharge, and increased healthcare costs. Therefore, an optimal management of the disease causing GI hemorrhage should include iron replacement therapy, along with the treatment of the underlying condition...

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Cystobiliary communication (CBF) with hepatic hydatid disease is responsible for postoperative bile leakage after surgical management. This study aims to detect various predictors of CBF and its outcome after surgical management. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This is a retrospective, cohort study of all patients who underwent surgical management for hydatid disease of the liver. Patient data were recorded on an internal web-based registry system supplemented by paper records...

BACKGROUND/AIMS: South Asia is an enigma for gastric cancer (GC) because it is a low risk region with a high prevalence of Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) infections. We evaluated the trend of GC clinical presentation and risk factors in patients with dyspeptic symptoms. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The medical records of patients, coded by the international classification of diseases (ICD-10-CM, 2015, Diagnosis Code C16.9) for malignancies of stomach diagnosed by esophagogastroduodenoscopy (EGD) and histopathology, were studied...

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Dysregulation of T cell response is thought to play an important role in the immunopathogenesis of autoimmune hepatitis. However, no consensus has yet been reached regarding the implications of a distinct T cell subset in the pathogenesis of this progressive liver disease. Therefore, T-bet and GATA-3 expression was examined in patients with autoimmune hepatitis (AIH) and in healthy controls. Moreover, the profile of Th1 (IFN-γ) and Th2 (IL-4) cytokine gene expression was analyzed...

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) are a widely used class of drugs because of a generally acceptable safety profile. Among recently raised safety issues of the long-term use of PPIs is the increased risk of developing hypomagnesemia. As there have been very few prospective studies measuring serum magnesium levels before and after PPI therapy, we aimed to prospectively assess the potential association between PPI therapy for 12 months and the risk of hypomagnesemia as well as the incidence of new-onset hypomagnesemia during the study...

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Functional bowel disorders (FBDs) impair the quality of life in patients with end-stage renal disease (ESRD). The aim of our study was to determine the prevalence and distribution of the subtypes of FBDs in hemodialysis (HD) patients. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This prospective, cross-sectional study included 80 patients who received HD for more than 3 months (patient group) and 80 healthy controls (control group). FBDs were diagnosed according to the Rome II diagnostic criteria by excluding organic pathologies...

BACKGROUND/AIMS: This study aimed to compare the ability of conventional laboratory markers and scoring systems to early predict organ failure (OF) and to differentiate between transient and persistent OF in patients with acute pancreatitis (AP) using the revised Atlanta classification. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed the medical records of 214 patients with AP between January 2014 and July 2015. The predictive values of laboratory markers were analyzed...
