BACKGROUND/AIMS: Despite of successful endoscopic hemostasis of nonvariceal upper gastrointestinal bleeding (NGIB), rebleeding rate has not decreased. The aim of this study was to identify risk factors for rebleeding after endoscopic hemostasis in patients with NGIB according to bleeding patterns. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A retrospective analysis was performed on the consecutive patients with NGIB in whom successful primary endoscopic hemostasis had been achieved at three university hospitals in Korea...

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Identifying predictors of endoscopic recurrence (ER) has become very important to guide the decision of postoperative strategy. This study aimed to determine the rate of endoscopic recurrence until 12 months after ileocolic resection for Crohn disease (CD) in a cohort and identify its possible predictors. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We conducted a retrospective single-center study that included patients with CD who underwent ileocolic resection between 2003 and 2014...

BACKGROUND/AIMS: To evaluate the effect of hepatic steatosis on the apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) of hepatic fibrosis in patients with HCV genotype 4-related chronic hepatitis. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Overall, 268 chronic hepatitis C patients (164 males and 104 females) underwent liver biopsy for fibrosis assessment by the METAVIR score and grading for hepatic steatosis. They were classified into early fibrosis stage (F1, F2) and advanced fibrosis stage (F3, F4)...

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Galectin-9 (Gal-9) is a member of the β-galactoside-binding lectin family. Our previous study revealed that Gal-9 suppresses migration, invasion, and epithelial-mesenchymal transition in gastric cancer cells. Gal-9 was reported to have anti-metastatic activity in patients with malignant melanoma, breast cancer, and hepatocellular carcinoma. Therefore, we aimed to evaluate the prognostic significance of Gal-9 in patients with gastric cancer. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The clinical significance of Gal-9 was explored using clinical and pathological data from 619 patients with gastric cancer who underwent gastrectomy at National Cancer Center, Korea...

REVIEW
Carlos Moctezuma Velázquez, Juan G Abraldes
A major complication of portal hypertension in patients with cirrhosis is the development of esophageal varices with the associated risk of variceal bleeding. Hence, the Baveno consensus on portal hypertension in its first five editions had recommended surveillance with periodic upper endoscopies in these patients to identify in a timely fashion the development of esophageal varices and initiate a primary prophylaxis strategy in those at a high risk of bleeding. For the first time, the Sixth Baveno Consensus on Portal Hypertension (Baveno VI) recommended using non-invasive tools to rule out the presence of varices with a high risk of bleeding...

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Pancreatic solid pseudopapillary tumor (SPT) is a rare neoplasm in children. In this study, we aimed to present our surgical strategy based on minimal resection by enucleation or limited resection in localized pancreatic SPT. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed the medical records of children who underwent surgical resection between October 2011 and September 2016. RESULTS: Five female patients with a median age of 15 years (range, 14-17 years) were operated...

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Noninvasive activity markers are extremely important in conditions, such as pregnancy, when endoscopy is not recommended. The aim of this prospective study was to determine fecal calprotectin (FC) concentrations in healthy non-pregnant and pregnant women and in patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). MATERIALS AND METHODS: Healthy pregnant and non-pregnant women and patients with active and inactive IBD were prospectively enrolled in this study...

Upper gastrointestinal bleeding (UGIB) represents one of the most serious conditions of the gastrointestinal tract with a mortality rate of 10%. The main cause of UGIB is peptic ulcer, accounting for 28%-59% of cases. A rare cause of UGIB is submucosal arterial collaterals, which develop after splenic artery thrombosis. UGIB secondary to gastric submucosal collateral arteries should be considered in patients with endoscopic appearance of varicose veins in the absence of portal hypertension. Computed tomography angiography (CTA) is the only fast and noninvasive definitive imaging technique for such patients...

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Distinguishing between neoplastic and nonneoplastic gallbladder polyps (GBPs) in the preoperative workup is of great importance for appropriate treatment. The present study aimed to investigate the characteristics of GBPs and to determine potential predictive factors of neoplastic polyps. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The data of 278 patients who were confirmed to have GBPs through laparoscopic cholecystectomy were retrospectively analyzed. Polyps were classified as nonneoplastic and neoplastic GBPs, according to histopathological diagnoses...
