OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to compare 2 irrigation techniques by evaluating canal cleanliness and obturation of lateral/accessory canals. STUDY DESIGN: Seventy-five extracted canines were instrumented to a size #40/0.06 taper. The EndoActivator (EA) was compared with an ultrasonic unit for final irrigation. Each unit was used for 1 minute each with 6.15% NaOCl and 17% EDTA. A control group received syringe irrigation. Thirty teeth were sectioned and evaluated for debris removal and open dentinal tubules at 3/5 mm from the apical foramen with a scanning electron microscope...

Epidermoid cysts are rare, slow-growing, benign, developmental cysts that are derived from abnormally situated ectodermal tissue. Epidermoid cysts may grow anywhere on the body and about 7% of them are located in the head and neck. In literature, very few epidermoid cysts have been reported in the temporal region. Histopathologically, they are lined with plain stratified keratin-producing squamous epithelium, although in some cases part of the lining is made up of mucous secreting and ciliated epithelium. This may suggest an endodermal rather than an ectodermal origin...

OBJECTIVES: Identifying risk factors for dental trauma in children is important. The main aim of this retrospective study was to investigate the association between maxillary incisor trauma (MIT) and variables such as gender, malocclusion complexity, and orthodontic treatment need (OTN). STUDY DESIGN: ICON (Index of Complexity, Outcome and Need) scores were calculated in 502 schoolchildren (253 girls and 249 boys, aged 11-14-years). Subjects were categorized into 5 ICON complexity groups (easy to very difficult) and into 2 groups according to OTN (ICON >43, ICON <44)...

Disks were immersed in cell culture medium at 37°C for 5 days, and the extracts obtained were diluted with Dulbecco's Modified Eagle medium to achieve 5 concentrations (neat, 1/2, 1/10, 1/50, 1/100)...

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to investigate the cleaning ability of a self-adjusting file (SAF) system regarding debris and smear layer removal using ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) or MTAD. STUDY DESIGN: In total, 45 maxillary incisor teeth were randomly divided into 2 different irrigation groups of 20 canals each and a negative control group of 5 canals. The canals in each of the irrigation groups were irrigated using sodium hypochlorite (1.3%) as an initial irrigant during the first 2 minutes of operation, followed by 2 minutes continuous irrigation with either 17% EDTA or MTAD in a closed system...

A cutaneous draining sinus tract of dental origin is often a diagnostic challenge, because of its uncommon occurrence and absence of dental symptoms. Proper diagnosis, treatment, and the elimination of the source of infection are a must; otherwise, it can result in ineffective and inappropriate outcome of treatment. This article presents 4 cases of facial lesions misdiagnosed as being of nonodontogenic origin. The correct diagnosis in each case was cutaneous sinus tract secondary to pulpal necrosis, suppurative apical periodontitis, and osteomyelitis...

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to describe a series of 10 cases of oral-maxillofacial myiasis, discussing its main features, demographic distribution, and treatment aspects. STUDY DESIGN: A retrospective study was carried out involving male and female patients of any age with oral-maxillofacial myiasis. The sample was determined by spontaneous demand at the emergency ward of a hospital between January 2005 and January 2011 (6 years). After treatment of each case, data were gathered on the presence of associated systemic disorders, time elapsed since onset of the disease, and treatment established...

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to determine if mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) could be obtained from mandible marrow aspirates. STUDY DESIGN: In 5 patients, 10 mL marrow aspirates were obtained from both the mandible and the iliac crest. Second passage MSCs were characterized by fluorescence-activated cell sorting (FACS) analysis using MSC-specific cell surface marker, and fifth-passage cells were differentiated into 3 mesenchymal tissues in vitro. RESULTS: Average total cell yields of MSCs were 2...

Nicorandil-induced oral ulceration in 3 Japanese patients is reported. The patients were men aged 86, 81, and 91 years. Ulcers of 15, 10, and 12 mm in diameter, respectively, were observed at the border of all of the patients' tongues. These were painful and persistent but not indurated. Irritation by the teeth or dentures was not evident. They had been administered nicorandil at a dose of 15 mg for 22, 54, and 90 months, respectively; therefore, ulceration induced by nicorandil was suspected. In consultation with the doctor, nicorandil was withdrawn...

The maxillary sinus floor elevation procedure has gained popularity with predictable results, and is a safe, acceptable technique for bone augmentation, providing a base for dental implant treatment. Faint radiopaque lesions at the base of the maxillary sinus are frequent diagnoses on radiographs and must be identified during dental implant planning. Pseudocysts classically appear hemispheric, homogeneously opaque, and well delineated in panoramic and periapical radiographs. The great majority of these lesions are asymptomatic and do not require surgical treatment...

An osteoma is a slow-growing, benign lesion comprising mature bone tissue. Osteomas rarely occur in maxillary bones, with the exception of the maxillary sinuses. Various possible etiologies have been proposed, including congenital anomalies, chronic inflammation, muscular activity, embryogenetic changes, and trauma. Here we present a case of an osteoma of the buccal plate of the mandible at the site where a sports-related traumatic injury occurred 15 years earlier. Both conventional and 3-dimensional x-ray examinations were used for diagnosis and preoperative evaluation of the possible involvement of the adjacent anatomic structures...

Mucormycosis is a rare opportunistic infection caused by fungi belonging to Mucorales order. The infection usually starts in the middle or inferior nasal meatus and then spreads to the paranasal sinuses and the orbit. Then it reaches the brain through the ethmoid and the orbit apex and can lead to lethargy, paralysis, and death. The majority of cases of rhinocerebral mucormycosis are diagnosed in patients with immunologic and metabolic disorders. Early diagnosis is fundamental, and so is medical therapy with amphotericin B along with surgical toilet of the compromised tissues...

Primary sarcomas of the major salivary glands are rare and appear to originate from undifferentiated pluripotential mesenchymal cells. They must be distinguished from malignant supporting tissue neoplasms that secondarily involve the glands by direct extension or metastasis. Multidisciplinary management of head and neck soft tissue sarcomas is still controversial. We report a case of leiomyosarcoma of the submandibular gland in a 95-year-old man who was treated with excision of the right submandibular gland, extended to the surrounding tissues, without neck dissection...

OBJECTIVES: Sufficient closure of intraoral defects can be challenging. Various methods of tissue transfer have been presented in the literature. From skin grafts to microvascular flaps, most techniques used for intraoral reconstruction use skin to line out the oral cavity to guarantee an epithelial surface. Native mucosa tolerates the moist environment of the oral cavity, whereas skin flaps do to just a certain extent. This may lead to chronic inflammation of the flap-skin. Under rare circumstances, these histologic changes can enhance the risk for malignant transformation of the skin graft...
