BACKGROUND: Associations of social anxiety disorder (SAD) with various somatic symptoms have been already reported in the literature several times. The present study investigated somatic complaints in children and adolescents with SAD compared to controls and evaluated the relationship between social anxiety and somatic symptom severity. METHODS: Thirty children and adolescents with SAD were compared with 36 healthy age-matched controls. Self-reported fears were assessed using the Phobiefragebogen für Kinder und Jugendliche (PHOKI); emotional and behavioral problems were assessed using the Child Behavior Checklist (CBCL/4-18); and the Gießener Beschwerdebogen für Kinder und Jugendliche (GBB-KJ) was used to assess 59 somatic symptoms...

Psychiatric treatment has always been associated with violence and coercion. Involuntary admission and coercive measures are still frequently occurring components in everyday clinical practice.Up to 15% of psychiatric inpatients experience coercive treatment at least once during hospital stay. Particularly patients suffering from schizophrenia, organic mental disorders and mania have a high risk for such incidents. There is an ongoing intense debate on the need and justification of coercive measures, although most clinicians and scientists currently agree that there is no alternative...

A successful and sustainable treatment of psychiatric patients is based on intensive relationship work. After the introduction of the new Working Hours Act the standards of evidence-based treatment are endangered. Using the data of the official working schedule of the Psychiatric Department of the Danube hospital in Vienna, before and after the introduction of the new Working Hours Act, we demonstrate a significant decrease of the medical consistency of the patient-related doctors. New approaches must be considered in order to solve this problem of quality...

It is generally accepted, that sleepwalkers show complex behaviors leading to non-intended consequences. It is not unusual that these persons are thereby injured. However, sporadically a bizarre endangering of themselves or others is reported also, which ranges from homicide of the life partner to accidental (pseudo-)suicide.In this article, we report on a 28year-old man who unexpectedly attempted to hang himself by a whip at night. We discuss the reasons, why this bizarre act should actually be taken as a scenic behavior in the course of a NREM-parasomnia, and the difficulty to proof this claim...

BACKGROUND: Visuo-constructive functions are an important cognitive domain for the diagnosis and early detection of dementia. Using the Vienna Visuo-Constructional Test 3.0 Screening (VVT 3.0 Screening), we assessed visuo-constructive performance in subjective cognitive decline (SCD), mild cognitive impairment (MCI), Alzheimer's disease (AD), and healthy control (HC) groups to determine whether VVT scores can be used to distinguish the mentioned diagnostic groups and predict disease progression to more advanced stages...

Profound epidemiological data on the prevalence of mental health disorders and respective risk and protective factors is a prerequisite for adequate prevention, intervention and service planning. Children and adolescents are regarded as high priority groups for prevention in this field because of the high chronicity and individual burden of mental health disorders. The Mental Health in Austrian Teenagers (MHAT)-Study is the first epidemiological study based on a large representative sample of adolescents (N > 3700) in Austria in order to obtain the prevalence of a wide range of behavioral problems and psychiatric disorders...

Induced parental alienation is a specific form of psychological child abuse, which is listed in DSM-5, the current Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of the American Psychiatric Association (APA), under diagnostic code V 995.51 "child psychological abuse". Untreated induced parental alienation can lead to long-term traumatic psychological and physical effects in the children concerned. This fact is still not given sufficient attention in family court cases. The article gives a condensed overview of parental alienation, summarising its definition, the symptoms and the various levels of severity...

BACKGROUND: Research on migration provides controversial findings regarding the links between mental health and migration as well as the factors influencing the mental health of migrants. Even though there is evidence for differences between migrant groups from different countries of origin, almost no empirical studies about individual migrant groups in Austria have been undertaken so far. METHODS: In the present population-based study we compared depression and anxiety of 96 ex-Soviet Jews to a sample of 101 Austrians matched by age and sex...

Amphetamine type substances are the second most commonly consumed illicit drug type and their use is an important contributor to the global burden of disease. This investigation set out to determine whether, similar to alcohol or nicotine addiction, subgroups of consumers can also be found in amphetamine addicts. 204 consumers of methamphetamine only (n = 50) or both methamphetamine and heroin (n = 154) have been investigated in Mashhad, Iran by means of "Lesch Alcoholism Typology". No significant differences in consumption pattern or age of onset have been found between the different types...
