OBJECTIVE: We aimed to compare cutting-needle biopsy (CNB) diagnoses with excisional biopsy diagnoses of enlarging lymph nodes and to determine the diagnostic value of CNB. MATERIAL AND METHOD: Out of the 291 cases that underwent CNB from lymph nodes between 2010 and 2016, 60 were included in the study in which pathological lymph nodes were excised after CNB. Demographic information, pathology and imaging reports, the diameters of the lymph nodes and the length of the CNBs of these cases were obtained from the hospital registry system...

OBJECTIVE: There is an urgent need to identify molecular biomarkers rather than clinical markers to distinguish aggressive prostate cancer from the indolent majority for proper treatment and accurate prediction of prognosis. We aimed to investigate the immunohistochemical expression of epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT)-related molecules (Twist-1 and E-cadherin) and the stem cell marker EZH2 in prostate cancer and to assess their ability to identify the high-risk patients, in a trial to explore their prognostic implications...

X-linked lissencephaly, absent corpus callosum, and epilepsy of neonatal onset with ambiguous genitalia comprises the XLAG syndrome and only 15 cases have been reported in literature. Due to its rarity, the exact clinical course and outcome are not known. Exact associations of this disease are also elusive. Hereby we are reporting this extremely rare entity and we searched the English literature extensively to get consolidated knowledge regarding this entity that would help the readers. Pre-natal radiological work-up can detect these malformations, which should be followed by medical termination, counseling and karyotyping...

Ewing's sarcoma (ES) is a small round cell tumor of adolescents or young adults that usually arises in the deep soft tissues of the extremities. The tumor cells have uniform round nuclei, fine powdery chromatin and indistinct nucleoli. CD99 (O13) is a product of the MIC 2 gene that is highly sensitive to ES but not specific. A panel of markers should be used for the differential diagnosis of small round cell tumors because nearly all others, on occasion, show membranous staining for CD99. One of the defining feature of ES is the presence of 22q12 gene rearrangement...

With improvements in imaging to detect silent pancreatic lesions and increases in the number of centers now performing pancreatic surgery, more surgeries have been performed for indications other than invasive carcinoma. This has enormously added to our knowledge of the intraductal neoplasms of the pancreas. In addition, our understanding of the genetics of these lesions has expanded with the introduction of routine molecular genetic analyses. In this review, we provide an update into the most common intraductal neoplasms, namely intraductal papillary mucinous neoplasm and intraductal tubulopapillary neoplasm...

Inflammatory myofibroblastic tumor is an uncommon soft tissue neoplasm of uncertain biologic behavior, and rarely reported in the stomach. An eighteen-year-old male presented with a mass in the epigastrium of three-month duration. Clinical and radiological examination suggested a gastrointestinal stromal tumor or a leiomyoma in the lesser curvature of the stomach. On the basis of histomorphological features and immunohistochemical analysis the diagnosis of inflammatory myofibroblastic tumor in the lesser curvature of the stomach was made...

Xanthogranulomatous inflammation of the pancreas is an extremely rare entity mimicking pancreatic neoplasia. Elevation of tumor markers has seldom been reported in xanthogranulomatous inflammation of the pancreas, rendering the diagnosis difficult and highlighting the importance of a meticulous histopathological examination. A 58-year-old male presented with severe abdominal pain and anorexia for six months. A heterogeneously enhancing solid cystic mass was detected in the pancreatic head on contrast enhanced computed tomography...

OBJECTIVE: Colorectal carcinoma is the most common neoplasm of the gastrointestinal tract. COX-2 expression is upregulated in colorectal carcinoma. Therefore its assessment would identify patients amenable to adjuvant anticyclooxygenase therapy. We studied COX-2 immunoexpression in colorectal adenocarcinoma and correlated it with clinicopathological features as age, gender, tumor location, tumor size, degree of differentiation, and TNM stage. MATERIAL AND METHOD: Sixty-five consecutive cases of colorectal adenocarcinoma were retrieved from the records of the Pathology Department of a tertiary care hospital...

OBJECTIVE: Although pituitary adenomas have benign histomorphological features, some of them may present in an aggressive manner. To predict the behaviour of these tumours, telomerase reverse transcriptase (TERT) activity in pituitary adenomas has been the subject of a few studies with contradictory results. This study aims to investigate whether immunohistochemical expression of TERT differs in neoplastic and nonneoplastic pituitary tissues and aims to investigate whether TERT expression is related to clinicopathological features of pituitary adenomas...

Myoepithelial carcinomas are quite infrequent neoplasms and coupled with their diverse morphological appearance are interesting as far as diagnosis and management is concerned. They account for less than 1% of all salivary gland tumors. The variable morphologic appearance of myoepithelial carcinoma leads to a wide differential diagnosis, including primary salivary gland tumors and metastatic tumors. The prognosis of these tumors is not fair as they are locally aggressive and approximately one third of the patients die of the pathology...

OBJECTIVE: Alpha-inhibin and calretinin have been traditionally used as immunomarkers for sex cord stromal tumors. However, the variation in their immunoreactivity and their lack of specificity for sex cord stromal tumor makes the search for a more sensitive and specific immunohistochemical marker essential in routine diagnosis of sex cord stromal tumor. This study was conducted to correlate the diagnostic utility of FOXL2 with inhibin and calretinin in the diagnosis of sex cord stromal tumors of ovary...

OBJECTIVE: Chordoma is a rare malignant bone tumor with a poor outcome. Although radiotherapy and gamma knife surgery have been used for treatment, providing a cure for the tumor is not easy, because of the frequent recurrences. Molecular targeted therapy against tyrosine kinases has been effective in the treatment of malignancies such as breast and lung cancers and brain tumors. We aimed to analyse the histopathological features of chordomas and the immunoexpression profiles of the three receptor tyrosine kinases of EGFR, c-Met and c-Erb-B2 in chordomas...

Clear cell renal cell carcinoma with mucin secretion is an unexpected situation. Primary renal adenocarcinoma and various metastatic carcinomas should be considered in the differential diagnosis. Prognostic significance is not yet fully known due to the limited number of reported cases, and these lesions have been grouped under unclassified renal cell carcinoma. In our study, clear cell renal cell carcinoma with significant luminal mucin secretion is discussed with its histological, histochemical and immunohistochemical features...

Chronic myeloid leukemia (CML) is characterized by increased and unregulated proliferation of granulocytic lineage in the bone marrow and presence of these immature myeloid cells in the peripheral blood with presence of Philadelphia (Ph) chromosome. Tyrosine kinase inhibitors are the most important drugs in the CML therapy and provide long disease-free survival. Due to the increased survival of CML patients with continual administration of these drugs, the chance of development of secondary malignancies may increase...

Teratoid Wilms tumor is a rare variant of Wilms tumor composed predominantly of well-differentiated epithelial and/or mesenchymal heterologous elements. Like the classical Wilms tumor, this variant may also occur as a renal mass or may be found in extra renal locations. This tumor may be treated effectively by surgical resection; however, it generally fails to respond to chemotherapy. A review of the literature revealed 30 reported cases of intra renal and 5 reports of extra renal teratoid Wilms tumor. We report our experience with an additional three cases of renal teratoid Wilms tumor adding to the 30 cases previously reported...

Primary cardiac tumors are rare in children with a low incidence varying from 0.0017 to 0.28% in autopsy studies. Approximately 90% of the reported primary cardiac tumors in the pediatric population are benign and the most common subtype is rhabdomyomas accounting for approximately 60%, while hemangiomas are rare primary tumors with a 5% incidence. Hypoplastic left heart syndrome is abnormal development of the left-sided cardiac structures, leading to obstruction of blood flow from the left ventricle out-flow tract...
