People with HIV (human immunodeficiency virus) are at higher risk of developing Lymphomas in comparison to people without HIV. The risk of developing lymphomas in patients with HIV continues to persist, even in the HAART era. We retrospectively analysed outcomes of patients with HIV associated lymphomas between Jan 2012 and Oct 2022, with minimum follow up of 6 months. Outcomes have been reported in terms of overall response rate (ORR), overall survival (OS) and event free survival (EFS). Statistical methods such as Kaplan Meier test were used to assess the overall survival and progression free survival, while chi-square test was used to assess factors affecting disease response...

To investigate the risk factors of FVIII inhibitors development in severe hemophilia A (HA) patients who were received on-demand therapy and were infused with plasma cryoprecipitate and multiple FVIII concentrates alternately. We collected clinical information from 43 severe HA children who were treated with plasma cryoprecipitate and multiple FVIII concentrates. The F8 mutation was detected by long-distance PCR for inversion and detected by all exons and their flanking sequencing for other mutations. The inhibitor detection was performed by Nijmegen-modified Bethesda assay...

UNLABELLED: Non-transfusion dependent thalassemia (NTDT) refers to a group of thalassemic disorders who do not need regular transfusions for survival, however it may be needed in certain conditions. Metformin was reported as a potential fetal hemoglobin (HbF) inducing agent in vitro but its efficacy and safety in vivo was not fully studied. This is a prospective interventional study aimed at studying the effect of metformin on HbF change in NTDT. METHODS: Patients with established diagnosis of NTDT were enrolled...

Pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) remains a concern in patients with Beta thalassemia major (TM). However, this study aims to investigate the prevalence of PAH in TM patients in Kerman City placed in the south of Iran. In this cross-sectional study on 271 IranianBeta-thalassemia patients (mean age 19.8 ± 7.9 in the range 10-60), Age, sex, weekly deferral taking, the number of blood transfusion in a month, and last echocardiography report data was gathered from every patient's file...

Hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) or Bone Marrow Transplantation (BMT) has significantly improved the survival rates of patients suffering from hematological malignancies. However, the cure can only be achieved at the price of morbidity and long-term complications. Thus, this study aimed to evaluate the short-term effect of HSCT on depressive behavior, cognition, and quality of life (QoL) in leukemia patients. Sixty patients were included in this prospective observational study. The current study assessed depression using Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-9) scale, cognition using Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MOCA) scale and QoL using European Organization for the Research and Treatment of Cancer Quality of Life Questionnaire (EORTC QLQ C30) before 7 days of the therapy i...

The utility and sensitivity of quantitative D-Dimer assay to rule out the diagnosis of deep vein thrombosis is well established. We extrapolated this principle to evaluate the utility of D-Dimer assay in exclusion of cerebral venous sinus thrombosis (CVST). As advanced imaging modalities required for the diagnosis of CVST might not be available everywhere, it is important to have a sensitive biomarker and a clinical decision rule which can assist in the diagnosis. Patients undergoing CT/MR Venography of the brain with the suspicion of CVST were enrolled...

Knowledge about the frequency of Rh blood group systems in the local population help build a donor pool for multi-transfused patients and provide antigen-negative compatible blood for patients with alloantibodies. ABO and Rh antigens were identified for blood donors and patients before transfusion. The antiglobulin test based on the micro-column gel method was used to perform unexpected antibody screening and identification for patients in pre-transfusion testing. The incidence of the adverse transfusion reactions and the accordance rate of Rh phenotype-matched transfusion were analyzed retrospectively...

This article is intended to identify the potential mutations of the FXII gene ( F12 ) in an inherited FXII deficiency pedigree and illuminate the pathogenesis of the disease. The coagulation FXII activity (FXII:C) and FXII antigen (FXII:Ag) were inspected by one-stage clotting assay and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay(ELISA), respectively. Polymerase chain reaction amplification (PCR) was performed and the F12 gene was sequenced directly. A molecular model of FXIIprotein was established for further analysis...

PURPOSE: Hemophilia B is an X-linked congenital bleeding disorder caused by a deficiency of coagulation factor IX (FIX) clotting activity. This study evaluated safety and efficacy of nonacog alfa, a recombinant human blood coagulation FIX replacement product, in males aged 12-65 years with hemophilia B (FIX activity ≤ 2%) with or without inhibitors in India. METHODS: In this multicenter, open-label, post-approval phase 4 study, participants were treated for up to 8 weeks, with up to a 4-week screening period and a subsequent post-treatment 28-day safety observation period...

Platelets undergo remarkable morphological changes during storage. Platelets change into different sizes and densities and differ in their biochemistry and functions. However, the correlation between structural heterogeneity and platelet autophagy is largely unknown. The aim of this study was to investigate the autophagy process in vitro, such as routine storage of platelets, and explore the role of reactive oxygen species (ROS) involved in the regulation of platelet autophagy. The ROS and autophagy levels of platelet concentrates from apheresis platelets were evaluated through flow cytometry...

The Rhesus (Rh) blood group is a significant and complicated biological system in humans. Incompatible transfusion or pregnancy with Rh antigens can lead to the production of alloantibodies, among which the anti-E antibody is prevalent. The relationship between Anti-E antibody and HLA-II gene polymorphism in Chinese pregnant women is worth exploring. Our aim in this study was to verify the correlation between HLA-II gene polymorphisms and RhE alloimmunization in pregnant Chinese women through HLA-II typing and DR-RhE structural prediction...

Thromboembolic events (TE) in childhood are relatively rare but, serious complications of acute leukemia. The aim was to define the incidence and risk factors of thrombosis in children with leukemias. The electronic files of pediatric denovo/relapsed acute leukemia patients aged below 18 years, treated between 2011 and 2021 were retrospectively evaluated for thrombotic attacks. Thirty out of 469 patients developed 35 thrombotic events. The median age at the time of the TE was 11.8 (2-17.6) years, and the median time from diagnosis to TE was 9 (0-58) months...

UNLABELLED: Biclonal B cell lymphomas (BCL) of two different low-grade components are rare. Multiparametric flow cytometry (MFC) is an integral tool in lymphoma diagnosis and very efficient in picking up BCL cases, especially when the associated second component is small. We studied the incidence of BCL in the routine blood and marrow samples sent for immunophenotyping by MFC. A total of 376 cases were analyzed retrospectively. We studied their clinical, immunophenotypic, molecular, and cytogenetic findings with literature review...

UNLABELLED: Targeting toll-like receptors (TLRs), via TLR agonists, has been implicated in the regulation of immunometabolism. B-chronic lymphocytic leukemia (B-CLL) represents a suitable model for B-cell derived malignancies with shifted metabolic adaptations. Several signaling pathways have been found to be critical in metabolic reprogramming of CLL, including mechanistic target of rapamycin- hypoxia inducible factor-1α (mTOR- HIF-1α) pathway, the main metabolic regulator of glycolysis...
