This study presented a case of coronavirus disease 2019 pneumonia in a patient in isolation for 103 days. Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 was positive in her last 4 days. Despite policies of temperature checks for employees and visitors, and employees facing patients wearing a mask, the transmission of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 from an asymptomatic carrier was inevitable.

Eosinopenia was frequently encountered in patients with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). We describe a case of a 59-year-old man who was treated with high-dose corticosteroids and anti-interleukin 1 receptor antagonist therapy because of severe acute respiratory distress syndrome due to a so-called cytokine storm in COVID-19. He had chronic eosinophilia for many years due to an unknown Strongyloides stercoralis infection, proven by serology and a positive polymerase chain reaction test on a stool sample...

BACKGROUND: The decision of when it is safe to discontinue transmission-based precautions for SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) hospitalized patients has been controversial. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention offered reverse transcriptase polymerase chain reaction (PCR) diagnostic test- or symptom-based guidelines. METHODS: A retrospective chart review of Vidant Health system, Eastern North Carolina, was conducted. Length of stay, days in isolation unit, and date appropriate for discharge or isolation discontinuation based on the symptom-based strategy were recorded...

Background: Remdesivir treatment, like most antiviral drugs, is likely to be most effective when used early in the course of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). Optimal timing of remdesivir for the treatment of COVID-19 remains unclear. Objectives: The aim of this study was to determine whether early treatment with remdesivir improves clinical outcomes: length of stay, need for mechanical ventilation, and death. Methods: We conducted a retrospective observational study of patients hospitalized with COVID-19 who received remdesivir therapy within 10 days of symptom onset at a large health system in Georgia, United States...

The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has led to a significant shortage of personal protective equipment in multiple health care facilities around the world, with the highest impact on N95 respirator masks. The N95 respirator is a mask that blocks at least 95% of very small (0.3 μm) particles and is considered a standard for enhanced respiratory precautions. The N95 mask shortage has created a need for other options for nasal and oral respiratory protection with similar filtration efficiency and "medical-grade" clearance, which can be used in health care settings...

The outbreak of novel coronavirus infection emerged in and spread from China to other countries. Health care workers are at significant risk of infection from this virus in medical settings. We aimed to explore and evaluate the response of medical doctors and hospital administration to infection prevention and control of suspected or confirmed COVID-19 patients. Methods: This cross-sectional study included 108 doctors who had exposure to suspected/confirmed COVID-19 patients in public hospitals...

Currently, the world has found itself in a global pandemic with coronavirus. At its start, to limit the spread of this virus, countries, states, and counties have implemented stay-at-home orders and shutdowns. These shutdowns had great impacts on people's well-being and exacerbated social determinants of health. This project aims to identify patient social determinants of health and their associations during the COVID-19 pandemic via telemedicine. Methods: A total of 104 patients were surveyed within Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, who had not been seen for at least 4 weeks before March 23, 2020 and who did not have a scheduled visit within 4 weeks of the initial survey...

New York City was hard hit by COVID-19. Elmhurst Hospital is a public hospital in Queens where more than 1500 patients were hospitalized with COVID. During the pandemic, various treatments were used with hopes of reducing the need for mechanical ventilation and death. Methods: We retrospectively reviewed charts of patients admitted from March 25 to April 3 with severe or critical COVID-19 pneumonia who received tocilizumab compared with a similar cohort who did not. Analyses were performed to determine differences in outcomes...

The 2020-2021 US influenza season, although mild, initially raised concerns about an unprecedented dual threat of SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19, circulating alongside seasonal influenza viruses. Although everyone is susceptible to influenza infection, adults with chronic health conditions (including heart disease, lung disease, and diabetes) are particularly vulnerable to influenza-related complications including hospitalization, disability, and death-as are older adults (65+ years) and adults in underserved communities, in which rates of chronic health conditions are higher...

Background: Current hepatitis C virus (HCV) counseling guidelines do not recommend that HCV-infected patients notify their partners or encourage them to get tested. We aimed to assess healthcare professionals' knowledge of and attitudes toward counseling and testing recommendations for HCV-infected patients. Methods: A 15-question, anonymous survey was designed and distributed via email to a convenience sample of healthcare professionals who work with Brown University or Boston University affiliated hospitals to assess their knowledge of and attitudes toward counseling recommendations for HCV-infected patients...
