This study aimed to determine dust-phase phthalate levels in 112 dormitories of 14 universities during autumn and winter, investigate their potential sources, and estimate phthalate exposure via dust ingestion. Twelve phthalates were detected, among which di-(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP) and dicyclohexyl phthalate (DCHP) were the most abundant, followed by di-isobutyl phthalate (DiBP) and di-n-butyl phthalate (DnBP). The median concentrations and contributions of DCHP and DEHP were the highest. The contributions of di-n-octyl phthalate and di-nonyl phthalate were higher in winter than in autumn...

Decentralized water systems (DWS) distribute water in remote African areas. Throughout an intervention in Maniema, Congo, the influence of a DWS performing chlorination in the community's water quality was measured. Additionally, a socio-economic and WASH practices survey was conducted in the communities. Free residual chlorine (FRC) and microbiological contamination were measured; at the borehole, treatment site, distribution points, and households's water containers. In Big Five, water was collected from unimproved sources before DWS construction...

Secular trends of mortality and disability-adjusted life years (DALY) in type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) attributable to PM2.5 exposure in China remain unclear. This study applied the joinpoint regression analysis and age-period-cohort model to assess the secular trends. There was a slight alternation in age-standardized rate of mortality and DALY in the total population, while the changes were increased in males and decreased in females from 1990 to 2019. Meanwhile, the changes attributable to ambient particular matter pollution exposure (APE) increased significantly and reduced household air pollution from solid fuels exposure (HPE)...

This systematic review explores the release and health outcomes of exposure to chalk particles in classrooms. A literature search was conducted on Scopus, Google Scholar, and the Web of Science. Chalk particles contribute significantly to poor indoor air quality in classrooms. Higher concentrations of PM2.5 chalk particles were found in the front row (14.25 µg/m3 ) and near the chalkboard (19.07 µg/m3 ). Inhalation and dermal are significant exposure routes; hence, teachers and learners are at risk of developing respiratory and skin disorders...

Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is an important public health issue owing to its rising global prevalence. Phthalates cause various health problems and are currently regulated in developed countries. However, studies on the impacts of low-level phthalate exposure under these regulations on T2DM are limited. This study investigated the impacts of combined and single exposures to phthalates and their alternatives on the prevalence of T2DM in 3,005 adults in the United States. The results indicated a positive joint effect of phthalate mixtures on the prevalence of T2DM...

Environmental exposure is associated with increased incidence of respiratory and cardiovascular diseases and reduced fertility. Exposure to air pollution can influence gene expression through epigenetic mechanisms. In this study, we analysed gene-specific CpG methylation in spermatozoa of city policemen occupationally exposed to air pollution in two Czech cities differing by sources and composition of the air pollution. In Prague, the pollution is mainly formed by NO2 from heavy traffic. Ostrava is a hotspot of industrial air pollution with high concentrations of particular matter (PM) and benzo[a]pyrene (B[a]P)...

Climate change affects the spread of waterborne infectious diseases, yet research on vulnerability to outbreaks remains limited. This integrative review examines how climate variables (temperature and precipitation) relate to human vulnerability factors in Pakistan. By 2060, mean temperatures are projected to rise from 21.68°C (2021) to 30°C, with relatively stable precipitation. The epidemiological investigation in Pakistan identified Diarrhea (119,000 cases/year), Malaria (2.6 million cases/year), and Hepatitis (A and E) as the most prevalent infections...

This study aimed to evaluate all studies which used the micronucleus assay using oral cells in the attempt to understand whether such technique is efficient in evaluating genotoxicity in gas station attendants. Full manuscripts from 16 studies were carefully selected by the authors. Our results demonstrate that continuous exposure to derivatives of petroleum may lead to genotoxic effects since all studies demonstrated positive findings (16 out of 16) and 11 of them had a strong or moderate final rating. In summary, our results reveal that gas station attendants are occupationally exposed to genotoxic agents and that the micronucleus assay in oral mucosa is indeed an effective method to evaluate genotoxicity in this specific case...
