PURPOSE: To evaluate the change of residual volume of eye drop after instillation in patients with 23-gauge microincision vitrectomy surgery (MIVS). METHODS: Patient who were treated 23-gauge MIVS from November 2014 to July 2015 were included. The residual volume was defined as the amount of remnant eye drop in patient's eyes after instillation, calculated as the difference between instillation volume and spilled volume of eye drop. Calculation of residual volume of eye drop was performed one day before surgery, and daily from postoperative day 1 to day 5...

PURPOSE: To investigate the effects of anti-vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) antibody on the survival of retinal ganglion cell (RGC)-5 cells differentiated with staurosporine under oxidative stress. METHODS: We used real-time polymerase chain reaction and Western blot to confirm the expression of VEGF, VEGF receptor (VEGFR)-1 and VEGFR-2 in RGC-5 cells differentiated with staurosporine for 6 hours. The differentiated RGC-5 cells were treated with 800 μM hydrogen peroxide (H₂O₂) for 24 hours to induce oxidative stress...

REVIEW
Shwu Jiuan Sheu
Endophthalmitis is a rare but severe form of ocular inflammation due to infection of the intraocular cavity that can lead to irreversible visual loss if not treated properly and timely. It can be classified as exogenous or endogenous based on the transmission route of the infectious source. Exogenous endophthalmitis occurs when infecting organisms gain entry into the eye via direct inoculation, while endogenous endophthalmitis occurs when infectious agents hematogenously spread into the eye from a distant focus of infection...

PURPOSE: To report clinical features of patients with retinal and choroidal diseases presenting with acute visual disturbance during pregnancy. METHODS: In this retrospective case series, patients who developed acute visual loss during pregnancy (including puerperium) and visited a tertiary hospital from July 2007 to June 2015, were recruited by searching electronic medical records. Patients were categorized according to the cause of visual loss. Clinical features and required diagnostic modalities were analyzed in the retinal and choroidal disease group...

PURPOSE: To elucidate the learning curve for endoscopic endonasal dacryocystorhinostomy (EE-DCR) based on the results of EE-DCR performed by three surgeons at three different tertiary hospitals. METHODS: A retrospective review of the medical records of 386 eyes of 337 patients who had undergone EE-DCR by three surgeons at three tertiary hospitals and who were available for a >6-month postoperative observation period was conducted. The success of a given surgery was determined based on the results of a test performed during the patient's last outpatient visit to the hospital...

METHODS: Sixty eyes from 30 patients with mild to moderate dry eye syndrome were included. Tear meniscus images acquired by anterior segment spectral-domain optical coherence tomography were analyzed using National Institutes of Health's image-analysis software (ImageJ 1...

METHODS: The medical records of patients with uncomplicated RRD treated with SB were retrospectively reviewed. Eyes with known prognostic factors for RRD, such as fovea-on, proliferative vitreoretinopathy, pseudophakia, aphakia, multiple breaks, or media opacity, were excluded...

PURPOSE: To investigate the causes of lower eyelid retraction and evaluate the outcomes of various surgical procedures. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective medical record review of patients who underwent lower eyelid retraction surgery performed by a single surgeon at Kim's Eye Hospital between 2006 and 2013. We investigated the causes of lower eyelid retraction, clinical history, characteristics, treatment, and surgical outcomes. Preoperative and postoperative margin reflex distance 2 and inferior scleral show were measured for each eyelid...

PURPOSE: To compare vascular displacement in the macula after surgical closure of idiopathic macular hole (MH) after single-layered inverted internal limiting membrane (ILM) flap technique and conventional ILM removal. METHODS: This retrospective study included patients who underwent either vitrectomy and ILM removal only or vitrectomy with single-layered inverted ILM flap for idiopathic MH larger than 400 μm from 2012 to 2015. A customized program compared the positions of the retinal vessels in the macula between preoperative and postoperative photographs...

PURPOSE: We aimed to examine the clinical features and prognosis of ocular ischemic syndrome and to investigate the risk factors for the development of neovascular glaucoma (NVG). METHODS: The medical records from 25 patients (25 eyes) who were diagnosed with ocular ischemic syndrome were retrospectively analyzed. We recorded the length of time between symptom onset and diagnosis, visual acuity, intraocular pressure, clinical findings of the anterior and posterior segments of the eye, fluorescein angiography, systemic diseases, smoking history, and the extent of any ipsilateral carotid artery stenosis...

PURPOSE: In the present study, the incidence and risk factors of lens-iris diaphragm retropulsion syndrome (LIDRS) were evaluated. METHODS: Patients who underwent cataract surgery using phacoemulsification between June 2014 and December 2014 were included in the study. The preoperative ocular biometric and intraoperative surgical parameters were examined. The incidence of LIDRS and various risk factors were analyzed using an independent t-test, Pearson's chi-square test, and univariable and multivariable logistic regression analyses...

Seung Pil Bang, Soon Young Cho, Se Youp Lee
PURPOSE: To compare long-term surgical outcomes after bilateral lateral rectus recession (BLR) and unilateral lateral rectus recession-medial rectus resection (RR) for the treatment of basic-type intermittent exotropia. METHODS: Consecutive patients who underwent BLR or RR for treatment of intermittent exotropia between 1999 and 2010 and underwent ≥5 years of follow-up were recruited for this study. Surgical outcomes were grouped according to postoperative angle of deviation: overcorrection (esophoria/tropia >8 prism diopters [Δ]), success (esophoria/tropia ≤8Δ to exophoria/tropia ≤8Δ), and undercorrection/recurrence (exophoria/tropia >8Δ)...

PURPOSE: To report the patient characteristics and treatment outcomes in 12 cases of orbital lymphangioma. METHODS: In this study, orbital lymphangioma was diagnosed based on clinical, radiologic (computed tomography, magnetic resonance imaging), and histologic findings when possible. Patients whose vision was not compromised by orbital lymphangioma, or that did not have increased intraocular pressure (IOP), received oral corticosteroids. Orbital lymphangioma that affected vision or increased IOP was treated by surgery, which included aspiration of blood or partial resection with or without injection of a sclerosant...

PURPOSE: To evaluate visual and anatomical results and identify factors that influence vitrectomy and silicone oil (SO) injection outcomes in proliferative diabetic retinopathy (PDR). METHODS: This retrospective study included 236 eyes with PDR that were undergoing vitrectomy and SO injection with >3-month follow-up. The primary outcomes were final best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA) and retinal attachment rate. RESULTS: At the final visit (mean, 88 ± 58 weeks), complete, partial, and no retinal attachment were observed in 86...

PURPOSE: To investigate the effect of preoperative part-time occlusion therapy on long-term surgical success in early-onset exotropia. METHODS: The medical records of patients who underwent surgery for exotropia with onset before the first year of age and who were followed for ≥3 years were reviewed. Patients were divided into two groups according to the degree of compliance with part-time occlusion therapy: the good compliance group (>50% adherence rate) and the poor compliance group (≤50% adherence rate)...
