Medication errors are a major patient safety issue and account for 1-2 million hospitalizations and between 100,000 and 200,000 deaths annually. Approximately 41 % of all medication errors are due to improper dose calculations. Studies have shown mean scores on the medication dosage calculation test for nursing students range from 35 to 71 %. Despite new technology created to aid in dosage calculations, the issue is still prevalent among nurses. It is critical that the elements contributing to the nurses' ability to complete dosage calculations be determined so that calculation curriculum in nursing schools can be updated to better prepare students for practice...

Burnout is a public health crisis that persists at the expense of clinician well-being, the healthcare workforce, and the quality of care provided. Clinician well-being is a professional imperative, yet nursing students still report higher levels of burnout than non-nursing students. Cultivating an academic learning environment that supports the development of resiliency, well-being, and improved student mental health requires a coordinated and sustained effort from nurse educators and academic leaders. This article aims to inspire nurse educators to take the first or next steps toward integrating wellness into nursing curricula...

BACKGROUND: To date, research has not examined the mediating mechanism of ease of use and emotional reaction on the short-term focus of resistance to change and behavior intention to participate in technology-based course activities. OBJECTIVES: The study compares resistance to tech-based learning changes in younger and older nursing students and examines how ease of use and emotional reaction mediate between a short-term focus of resistance to change and intentional behavior to participate in technology-based course activities...

BACKGROUND: Professional identity is a relatively new concept in the nursing and health care literature. Using the definition of Professional Identity in Nursing (PIN) as its main construct, the authors developed and tested the second iteration of the Professional Identity in Nursing Scale (PINS 2.0) used to measure PIN from two perspectives, self and environment. PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the psychometric properties of the PINS 2.0. METHODS: To assess psychometric validity and reliability, a split-sample analysis was conducted...

BACKGROUND: Maine (ME) and Massachusetts (MA) nursing programs aim to develop collaborative training programs, but need to identify which nurses have interest in such programs. PURPOSE: We sought to determine sociodemographics of nurses seeking advanced nursing degrees nationally, and in ME and MA using the 2018 publicly available, National Sample Survey of Registered Nurses (NSSRN). METHODS: Weighted multivariable logistic regression for advanced degree-seeking, adjusted for sociodemographics...

BACKGROUND: Many nurse educators have pivoted their teaching to online formats since the COVID-19 pandemic began. Nurse educators face the dilemma that person-centred approaches are particularly challenging to replicate online. Current research provides general recommendations for designing and delivering online learning, but less is known about the usefulness of discipline-specific pedagogies for nursing education. AIM: This study explores the value of creating discipline-specific pedagogies for online learning in baccalaureate nursing education...

Curriculum integration is a partnership amongst multidisciplinary members to create a cohesive curriculum and improve education. Basic and clinical science integration helps students learn deeply. Integrated curricula facilitate students to become lifelong learners. It encourages critical thinking and clinical reflection and helps students become active, self-directed learners. A comprehensive integrated exam was conducted at Aga Khan University, School of Nursing and midwifery to establish meaningful learning and enhance theoretical knowledge application in clinical practice, using competencies from four different courses in second year of study...

The intricacies of the unique educational and leadership development trajectories of Black PhD-prepared nurse scientists are largely invisible in nursing faculty development literature. A broadened understanding of nursing leadership development and science mentorship can facilitate support for the next generation of Black nurse scientists. Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) can serve as formative launch pads for nurse scientist development. However, the role of HBCUs and strategies for supporting robust educational and mentor/training opportunities for Black PhD-prepared nurse scientists require thoughtful description and application...

BACKGROUND: The demand for nurse practitioners (NP) is growing; however, the NP role transition is difficult. NP role transition starts with NP student entering the program and can last for as long as two years post-graduation. NP clinical education and preceptorship model is outdated and is in need of restructuring. PURPOSE: The purpose of this literature review was to describe and explain the issues and resources within the NP clinical education and preceptorship that is used to support NPs' role transition both before and after graduation...

Educational strategies that allow students to experience patient care in both rural and urban settings are imperative to the recruitment and retention of nurses for medically underserved populations or health professional shortage areas. Two state schools of nursing (one urban-oriented and one rural-oriented) in the Mid-Atlantic region were awarded Health Resources and Service Administration (HRSA) project funding to educate nursing students and registered nurses in community-based primary care settings. This article will discuss an innovative rural-urban baccalaureate nursing student exchange model intended to increase understanding of enhanced RN roles in community-based primary care settings...

BACKGROUND: Dignity is a core value in nursing. One of the objectives in nursing education is to promote dignity and contribute to the students' discovery of this value. Research shows that dignity in nursing education is threatened, due to lack of attention and an increasing problem with incivility. PURPOSE: The study aims to explore how nursing educators experience their contribution in promoting dignity in nursing education. METHOD: Five focus group conversations were conducted with nursing educators, and Gadamer's philosophical hermeneutics was chosen as the study's scientific theoretical approach...

Graduate nursing students can face varied and significant stressors during their programs of study. The need for interventions to promote nursing student resiliency has been reported in the literature, by accrediting bodies, and in previous research conducted with students at the same university. Thus, the purpose of this project was to pilot a resilience course for Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) students. The theoretical frameworks guiding the design and implementation of the resiliency pilot program were andragogy (the science of adult learning) and rapid cycle quality improvement...

The article aims to present and critique the literature exploring nursing students' learning styles and to discuss the implications of understanding nursing students' learning styles for nurse educators, nursing students, and nursing academic programs. Learning style refers to the way an individual prefers to learn. Learning styles are shaped by several factors and change with different contexts. The learning styles vary among students in nursing programs and other health professions, with no one dominant style...

This article explores approaches to strengthening research education in nursing doctoral (PhD) programs with a focus on the roles of interdisciplinary faculty and the National Institute of Nursing Research (NINR), 2022-2026 Strategic Plan. Our view is that these components are interrelated and essential in educating the next generation of nurse researchers. To explore these topics, we undertook two analyses: (1) an examination of the preparation of PhD directors across the 119 AACN member schools; and (2) an evaluation of NIH funding levels to schools of nursing and the principal investigators' backgrounds among NINR grantees...

Graduate nurses are set to face complex global challenges in their future careers. Yet, current pedagogical practices fall short in preparing the future workforce for what lies ahead. There is, thus, an urgent need to disrupt traditional nursing education methods in order to transform our society. Transformation includes ensuring our students are educated on their responsibility toward social, economic and environmental sustainability. The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), a set of global targets developed by the United Nations, offer a framework for engaging in higher education that promotes a better future; however, to date there are few examples of how the goals have been embedded into nursing curriculum...
