Of the outward manifestations of visceral malignancy, cutaneous metastases are of particular interest for their impact on identification, prognosis, and management of the primary tumor. Their diagnosis is often challenging and requires high clinical suspicion. The infrequency and clinicopathologic variability of cutaneous metastases can impede their recognition by physical exam and even histopathology. This review offers a practical approach to judicious utilization of the full repertoire of clinical and pathologic data in precise characterization of metastases to the skin...

BACKGROUND: To evaluate the role of microRNA564 (miR-564) in the development of hypertrophic scar and investigate the possible mechanism of this process. METHODS: The hypertrophic scar (HS) tissues and adjacent normal skin (NS) tissues were selected from 10 patients. The fibrosis-related proteins were detected via hematoxylin eosin (HE) staining, Masson staining and immunohistochemical detection. The relative expression difference of miR-564 in NS tissues and HS tissues was detected via reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR)...

Cutaneous lichen planus (CLP) is a chronic autoimmune disease classically associated with severely pruritic, polygonal, violaceous, flat-topped papules and plaques. Subtypes such as hypertrophic and bullous lichen planus and lichen planus pigmentosus have been described. Treatment can be challenging, and prospective controlled studies are lacking. Corticosteroids remain the major options for topical and systemic treatment, although some non-steroidal options exist. Phototherapy, especially with narrow band ultraviolet B (NB-UVB), is effective, but caution must be taken because of the risk of keobnerization...

Dermoscopy is a non-invasive diagnostic technique that facilitates the visualization of surface and subsurface structures of the skin. It has been proven to be an essential tool in the diagnosis of both malignant and benign cutaneous lesions. In this article, we review some of the most recent and noteworthy advances in dermoscopy. In addition, we discuss Reflectance Confocal Microscopy (RCM) and Optical Coherence Topography (OCT), two non-invasive imaging devices that may be used alongside dermoscopy to improve diagnostic accuracy...

Melanoma accounts for the majority of skin cancer-related deaths, and its incidence continues to rise worldwide. While advanced disease has historically been associated with poor long-term survival, early-stage disease has a favorable prognosis and therefore, early diagnosis is paramount. Resection of primary melanoma requires a balance of maximizing oncological outcome while minimizing morbidity. Wide excision with 1-2 cm margins, depending on depth of the tumor, is the standard of care for surgical treatment of primary, invasive melanoma...

Biologic therapies have revolutionized the approach to immune-mediated diseases such as psoriasis. Due to their favorable safety profiles and excellent efficacy, biologic agents are considered the gold-standard for moderate-to-severe psoriasis. The aim of this paper is to saliently review the severe and acute complications of the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved biologic agents for psoriasis. Reviewed agents include tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-alpha) inhibitors (etanercept, infliximab, and adalimumab), interleukin 12/23 inhibitors (ustekinumab), and interleukin 17 inhibitors (secukinumab and ixekizumab)...

BACKGROUND: The purpose of this study was to determine evaluate sun safety knowledge, attitudes and practices (KAP) among agricultural workers (AWs) in the Autonomous Province of Trento (North-Eastern Italy). METHODS: A cross sectional study was performed among AWs who attended pesticide training courses (2016). Participants received a structured questionnaire focusing on KAP towards sun protective behaviours. Synthetic scores for knowledge (GKS), risk perception (RPS), behavioural adaptation and use of personal protective equipment (SPPS) were calculated...

Mycosis fungoides (MF), the most common variant of among cutaneous T cell lymphomas (CTCL), is characterised in its early stages by clonal proliferation of malignant T-cells in the skin manifesting as erythematous patches and plaques with a chronic course and progression to cutaneous tumors and extracutaneous organs in some patients. Skin directed therapies (SDT) are primarily used for effective palliation in early stage disease. Phototherapy with ultraviolet A radiation combined with 8-methoxypsoralen (PUVA) and with ultraviolet B radiation (UVB) has a longstanding history in the treatment of MF and are highly effective in inducing remissions...

The most of the emergency in dermatology comprise a variety of entities that most are benign in course. However the vasculopathies and vasculitis are not common, but they could represent the 1,9% and 4,4% according to some studies of emergency dermatology department. They become an important diseases which have to identified early to established an appropiate managment and treatment. Some of them are well known as the leukocitoclastic vasculitis, Schölein-Henoch, panarteritis nodosa, ANCA associated vasculitis, giant cell arteritis, cryoglobulinemic vasculitis and antiphospholipid syndrome...

The phrase 'invisible dermatoses' has been used in two different contexts: 1) Invisible dermatoses to the clinician, i.e., diseases with no significant clinical features, 2) invisible dermatoses to the pathologist. These latter comprise a wide spectrum of entities which present with definite and obvious clinical features, but subtle or hidden histological features and are therefore "invisible" histologically. Diagnosis of such diseases represents a great challenge to both the dermatologist and dermatopathologist...

In recent years, emphasis on the physical examination has made way for a plethora of laboratory tests and sophisticated imaging diagnostic techniques. In addition, we are witnessing an underestimation of dermatology as a specialty around the world, which is accepted as an ambulatory specialty on the border of cosmetology and beautification. However, recognizing specific cutaneous clinical signs can facilitate timely diagnosis of various systemic infections and neoplastic diseases. Thus, a skilled dermatologist can play an essential role in the multidisciplinary team, involved in the care for systemically ill patients...

BACKGROUND: Head and neck melanoma is a clinical challenge. Indeed, cutaneous head and neck melanoma shows a worse prognosis in comparison to melanomas of other body sites. Although the emphasis on facial cosmetic preservation plays a pivotal role in comparison to other body areas, specific facial aesthetic units could also play a key role in the prognostic evaluation of the malignancy. METHODS: The aim of the current study was to evaluate the general outcome and clinicopathological features of head and neck melanoma and to detect prognostic differences according to each facial aesthetic unit...
