Erythroplasia of Queyrat (EQ) is a rare disease involving the mucosal and transitional surfaces of the penis. Effective treatment is necessary to minimize progression to squamous cell carcinoma. The standard therapy for EQ, partial or radical penectomy, is invasive; photodynamic therapy (PDT) may be an effective, non-surgical tissue-sparing option. We report the case of a 67-year-old patient with long-standing EQ who was successfully treated with methyl aminolevulinate-PDT (MAL-PDT). A complete clinical response, confirmed by incisional biopsy, was achieved after five sessions of every-other-week treatment...

BACKGROUND: A spray formulation containing 2 vitamin-A derivatives (hydroxypinacolone retinoate and retinol) carried in glycospheres (RetinSphere®) combined with an antimicrobial peptide (BIOPEP-15), salicylic acid and vitamin E (BR) has been recently developed for the treatment of truncal acne. We evaluated clinical efficacy of BR in comparison with two commonly used sprays, containing triethylcitrate and ethylinoleate (AK) and containing betaine, glycine and salicylic acid 2% (SP)...

INTRODUCTION: Hidradenitis suppurativa (HS) is a chronic relapsing suppurativa skin disease localized in the apocrine-gland-bearing areas of the body, predominantly in the axillae and groin. EVIDENCE ACQUISITION: Although important risk factors have been identified, the pathomechanisms of the disease have not been fully understood. In the absence of proper treatment chronic inflammation results in debilitating, and sometimes life-threatening complications. EVIDENCE SYNTHESIS: This severe and chronic disease can have detrimental effects on self-esteem and quality of life and is associated with high comorbidity, such as the metabolic syndrome and its components...

BACKGROUND: Dermatitis herpetiformis (DH) is characterized by the presence of anti-tissue transglutaminase (tTG) IgA antibodies in patient sera. In 2002, anti-epidermal transglutaminase (eTG) antibodies have been identified in DH patients. Nowadays, their role is still controversial. AIM: To evaluate any association between presence/absence of anti-eTG antibodies and cutaneous manifestations during the follow-up. METHODS: Anti-eTG and anti-tTG antibodies from 13 patients on gluten-free diet (GFD) were studied during follow-up on ELISA...

BACKGROUND: Switching is a "hot" topic and the main reasons for switching prior biologic agent are for a primary failure, a secondary failure or drug intolerance, patient's dissatisfaction, physician decision. The aim of the study was to assess the optimization of the switching from a biological to another. METHODS: Five Dermatological Units have participated to PsOMarche working group have studied thirty-eight patients affected moderate to severe chronic plaque psoriasis at time 0 (patient recruitment at time of switching from biological therapy to another), 8 weeks (T8), 16 weeks (T16)...

Histological regression in primary cutaneous melanoma occurs in 10-35% of cases. Although there is a large body of literature on histological regression and prognosis in melanoma patients, not clear data concerning this feature has been reported. In the current review, a comprehensive overview of the main aspects of regression will be provided. The clinical utility of regression as a prognostic factor has been challenged recently. Nowadays evidences reported that this feature is protective on SLN metastases...

We report a case of localized pustular eruption on the face in a patient with Hodgkin lymphoma treated with granulocyte colony-stimulating factor for the development of chemotherapy-induced neutropenia. The administration of granulocyte colony-stimulating factor and the level of neutrophils were closely associated with disease activity, and negative cultures ruled out the hypothesis of an infective etiology. Because of the role of colony-stimulating factor in mobilization of the neutrophils we considered this phenomenon a skin reaction caused by granulocyte colony- stimulating factor-driven neutrophil accumulation...

BACKGROUND: Psoriasis is one of the most common inflammatory skin diseases. There seem to be an increasing interest in childhood psoriasis in recent years. METHODS: We conducted a survey among pediatricians in Italy. 50 pediatricians from different areas in Italy (north, center and south) were invited to participate, 37 were responding and active in data collection. Doctors were asked to review their databases and to fill a form providing a series of information about all patients diagnosed with psoriasis attending their ambulatory...

BACKGROUND: Morphea is a rare fibrosing skin disorder. Antinuclear antibodies (ANA), antihistone and rheumatoid factor are detected in high rate of morphea cases. Scleroderma-related antibodies are usually absent. METHODS: 21 adult patients affected by morphea were examined at the time of enrollment and after 6 months with the assessment of clinical outcome measures of disease severity and damage. Healthy subjects were considered as normal controls while patients affected by systemic sclerosis and other connective tissue diseases (CTD) were considered as pathological controls...

Multinucleate cell angiohistiocytoma (MCA) represent an uncommon benign fibrohistiocytic vascular lesion that sometimes may go undiagnosed because of its clinical and hystopathological similarities with benign fibrous histiocytoma and other soft-tissue neoplasms especially when localized on oral cavity or semi mucosa. We report the case of a solitary multinucleate cell angiohistiocytoma on the lower lip of a 46-year old woman suggesting that this rare lesion should be considered in the differential diagnosis of the oral soft-tissue neoplasms...

BACKGROUND: Irisin, a hormone like myokine, is identified to the relation with insulin resitance and metabolic syndrome recently. In the literature to date, there are no studies evaluating serum irisin levels in psoriasis patients. We aimed to elucidate the pathogenesis of insulin resistance in psoriasis patients by evaluating serum irisin levels and metabolic parameters associated with insulin resistance in patients with plaque-type psoriasis vulgarism. METHODS: The study included 40 patients with moderate-to-severe chronic plaque-type psoriasis vulgaris and 37 healthy subjects...

The authors report a case of sensorimotor polyneuropathy, diffuse hemangiomas and monoclonal gammopathy. Besides weight loss, there were diabetes mellitus and severe hypothyroidism. These alterations were consistent with POEMS (Polyneuropathy, Organomegaly, Endocrinopathy, Monoclonal gammopathy and Skin changes) syndrome, which is a rare systemic disease with monoclonal proliferation of plasmacytes and slow progression. Because of its rarity, the incidence of this disease is still unknown.

Psoriasis is a skin disease of an inflammatory nature, chronic, relapsing requiring long- term treatment and in many cases involves a reduction in the quality of life. Treatment with biologics is indicated in patients with moderate to severe psoriasis who do not respond or cannot be treated with conventional systemic drugs, and therapeutic goal is an equal or greater PASI-75 improved induction phase and keep long term in the maintenance phase. Before starting treatment with a biological agent it is necessary to review the contraindications and precautions, rule out latent TB infection and complete the pending immunizations...

Psoriasis is associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular disease and related comorbidities such as diabetes mellitus, metabolic syndrome, dyslipidemia, and obesity. The precise mechanistic links underlying the association between psoriasis and cardiovascular disease remain unknown, however, multiple pathologic mechanisms have been proposed. Shared inflammatory pathways between psoriasis and atherosclerosis are likely involved. Other possible mechanisms include endothelial dysfunction, cytokine dysregulation, platelet upregulation, and dyslipidemia...

BACKGROUND: Clinical or quality of life assessments are currently available for psoriasis severity evaluation and therapeutic response. Laboratory scores focused to measure and follow treatment efficacy are lacking at present. METHODS: Design a microscopic and biomolecular score to monitor skin disease severity and clinical response to anti-psoriatic treatments. A susceptibility gene analysis on cellular retinoic acid binding protein-II (CRABP-II), acting on keratinocyte differentiation, was also performed...
