OBJECTIVE: Surgery for tympanosclerosis has always been challenged with the risk of deterioration of hearing or the recurrence of the disease. If surgery is indicated, controversy exists regarding staging versus nonstaging and whether to perform stapedectomy or mobilize the fixed ossicles by removal of plaques. The aim of this study was to review the previous reports and to analyze the long-term surgical outcome of 30 patients who have been operated on owing to tympanosclerosis. METHODS: Nine hundred twelve cases with chronic otitis media with or without cholesteatoma that have undergone either the intact canal wall or canal wall down mastoidectomy technique were analyzed retrospectively...

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this paper has been to investigate the cochlear function and the basic properties of otoacoustic emissions (OAEs) in patients with tinnitus using Spontaneous Otoacoustic Emissions (SOAEs) and Transitory Evoked Otoacoustic Emissions (TEOAEs). MATERIALS AND METHODS: We have analyzed the incidence, amplitude and spectral content of hearing thresholds, SOAEs and TEOAEs in a sample of 44 ears. We have measured incidence, intensity, frequency, number of peaks and amplitude of emission and their variability across frequency range from 500 to 5000 Hz...

OBJECTIVE: This study discusses the anatomy and surgical techniques for the prevention of Frey syndrome. By performing only a partial superficial parotidectomy, we probably preserve the connection between the auriculotemporal nerve and the facial nerve. By suturing the remainder of the parotid gland tissue and the superficial musculoaponeurotic system (SMAS) back to the sternocleidomastoid muscle, an interposition is made. Furthermore, by extending the incision not too far cranially, the auriculotemporal nerve cutaneous branch is spared...

OBJECTIVE: Peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor gamma (PPAR gamma) has been implicated in the differentiation of several cell types, such as adipocytes, monocytes, and epidermal keratinocytes. This study concentrated on PPAR gamma's potential role in the maturation process of laryngeal squamous epithelium, both normal and premalignant, as well as in the differentiation grade of squamous cell carcinomas (SCCs) of the larynx. DESIGN: A retrospective study. SETTING: A basic research anatomy laboratory, operating within a tertiary care institution...

SETTING: A tertiary medical centre. DESIGN AND METHODS: Eighty-five patients (86 cases) who were treated for paranasal sinus fungus ball with transnasal endoscopic sinus surgery between 1995 and 2004 in our Department of Otorhinolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery...

INTRODUCTION: Although we routinely use morphine at our institution, moderate to severe pain often persists for several days after tonsillectomy. Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs could offer significant relief. Unfortunately, concerns about increased risk of bleeding limit their use. Selective inhibitors of cyclooxygenase type 2 (COX-2), such as rofecoxib, which do not affect bleeding time, could be an interesting option. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the efficiency and safety of "rofecoxib-morphine" versus "acetaminophen-morphine" for post-tonsillectomy pain control...

BACKGROUND: Hearing loss as a possible side effect of azithromycin has been recognized since 1994. Most reports suggesting a link between sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL) and this drug have been in association with prolonged doses for treatment of Mycobacterium lung disease. Mild-moderate, gradual, and reversible SNHL in the speech frequencies has been most often reported. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We describe irreversible SNHL in a patient in association with low-dose oral azithromycin prescribed for acute otitis media...

Nasopharyngeal tuberculosis is increasingly frequent and poses a diagnostic and therapeutic problem. Through a retrospective study spread out over 4 years, we brought back six cases of nasopharyngeal tuberculosis, including two men and four women of an average age of 41 years. The diagnosis was made, for all of our patients, after histologic study when we found typical tuberculosis lesions on biopsy specimens. The diagnosis of tuberculosis was established; all patients had an antituberculosis medical treatment in a department of infectious diseases...

OBJECTIVE: Obstructive symptoms, caused by tonsillar hypertrophy, have been attracting increasing interest, and tonsillectomy is often performed as a result of this indication. This study was undertaken to investigate the effect of the different surgical techniques, tonsilloplasty and tonsillectomy, on clinical symptoms in children with obstructive symptoms owing to tonsillar hypertrophy. METHODS: Thirty children, 3 to 12 years old, were included; 15 of them underwent tonsilloplasty and 15 tonsillectomy...
