OBJECTIVE: This study was aimed at determining the expression of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) in nasal polyps by immunohistochemical technique. METHODS: The study group consisted of 25 adult patients with nasal polyps who underwent functional endoscopic sinus surgery. Polyp tissues were taken from the maxillary and ethmoid sinuseses and the nasal cavity. The control group consisted of three adult patients without nasal polyps who underwent septoplasty operation...

BACKGROUND: The purpose of this study was to determine the role of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to predict persistent nodal disease in head and neck cancer treated with chemoradiation. METHODS: Retrospective chart review of 38 patients with head and neck cancer and N2/N3 neck disease who were treated with chemoradiation and who had an MRI 6 to 8 weeks following treatment. RESULTS: Sixteen patients had MRI findings suggestive of persistent nodal disease and were managed with neck dissections, three of whom had a persistent tumour...

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: This review was performed to evaluate the existing literature on sentinel lymph node biopsy (SLNB) for early-stage oral and oropharyngeal head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) in clinically negative (N0) necks. METHODS: A Medline search identified 43 pertinent published trials and reviews in the English-language literature from 1990 to 2005. RESULTS: Recent studies consistently show high sensitivities > 93% for T1 and T2 HNSCC...

David Goldstein, Goran Jeremic, Jeffrey Werger, Jonathan Irish
INTRODUCTION: There are limited studies documenting current wait times in the diagnosis and treatment of head and neck cancer. The objective of this study was to describe wait times along the health care pathway of head and neck cancer patients referred to an oncology centre in Ontario in 2005 and compare these times with those in a similar cohort of patients enrolled in 1995. METHODS: A cross-sectional study investigating wait times in newly diagnosed patients with squamous cell carcinoma of the head and neck was undertaken at the Princess Margaret Hospital, Toronto, Ontario...

OBJECTIVE: Re-treatment for cure of the Head and Neck (H&N) region is therapeutically challenging. In this review we explore the long-term results of Ir(192) low-dose-rate (LDR) brachytherapy in the select subgroup of patients treated for a new H&N malignancy. METHODS & MATERIAL: Thirteen patients received brachytherapy between 1987-2004 for a new primary H&N cancer, six of whom had been retreated previously. Brachytherapy was given as a monotherapy in eight patients and delivered adjuvantly in five patients...

OBJECTIVES: The surgical management of pituitary tumours is being impacted by the development of two key technologies: image guidance and endoscopy. This study sought to assess their impact. METHODS: Retrospective review of all patients referred to the Skull Base Clinic of the McGill University Health Centre since 2000. Patients were operated on in a multidisciplinary context using a multimodal approach combining endoscopy and microscopy. Imaging during the surgery was initially supported by both three-dimensional neuronavigation and traditional C-arm fluoroscopy...

INTRODUCTION: Loss of vestibular information from one labyrinth produces marked asymmetries of postural and ocular motor control, which resolve over time. Recent developments in mouse genetic engineering, which allow the generation of transgenic and knockout mutant mice, provide a unique opportunity to bridge the gap between the molecular mechanisms that underlie compensation and behaviour. METHOD: We compared compensation following unilateral labyrinthectomy in wild-type mice and a cerebellar-dysfunctional mouse (the Lurcher mutant)...

OBJECTIVE: To assess the effects on nasal polyposis from high-dose ibuprofen therapy used in children with cystic fibrosis (CF) pulmonary disease. DESIGN: Retrospective case series. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURE: Presence or absence of nasal polyps. RESULTS: Twenty-two patients treated with high-dose ibuprofen therapy to benefit pulmonary function were identified from 235 patients with CF. Sinonasal disease was present in 19 patients, of whom 12 had nasal polyposis...
