This study aimed to realize a prospective follow-up of the injuries occurring in female and male football players involved in the highest league in the Grand-Duchy of Luxembourg. Data concerning anthropometric characteristics and football activities were gathered in 125 female and 243 male football players via questionnaires at the beginning of the study. Then, a follow-up of moderate to severe injuries (> 15 days of interruption in football practice) was performed throughout the season 2013-2014. Sixteen injuries (injury incidence = 0...

Radiographic modalities include brain CT, MRI and PET scan. The differential diagnosis are usually: primary CNS lymphoma, cerebral metastasis, Progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy, cytomegalovirus. It indicates severe immunodeficiency and, if it remains untreated, it may lead to death. BACKGROUND: Aerobic exercise capacity is considered as an independent prognostic factor for cardiovascular disease and mortality. It is usually expressed in maximal oxygen consumption (VO2(max)) or metabolic equivalent (MET) and is measured by spiroergometry or calculated by a regression formula based on maximal performance achieved. Obesity is associated with reduced physical performance and increased cardiovascular mortality. The aim of our study was to describe the ergometric and cardiovascular profile of patients of an obesity clinic, and to compare a direct measure of VO2(max) with an indirect by a regression formula and to...

With the world further aging, geriatric medicine clearly became a necessity: in the 21th century many more people reach older ages by means of continued medical success in expanding lifespan. 150 years ago life expectancy was between 30 to 40 years, but today close to 800 million people are 60 yeas old or more. During the last century aging has been associated with decline and decay, but gradually more people lived ably and healthily in older ages. The expansion in life expectancy has become a synchronism of quality of life: the average 65 year old today is much healthier, physically and mentally fitter, than the average 50 year old 150 years ago, when Alois Alzheimer war born, a period when most nowadays existing geriatric institutions were envisioned and progressively realized over time...

The training and examination of Luxembourg's veterinarians are dictated during the first forty years of the 19th Century by the French and after by the Dutch. The legislation about the examinations of the Luxembourg's State is in effect from 1841 to 1969. In 1969, the legislation of granting degrees is replaced by the confirmation of foreign titles and degrees of higher education.

Exertional heat stroke can occur even after moderate efforts in persons predisposed to the condition. Consequences can be far-reaching, potentially leading to multi-organ failure and possibly death. We discuss the case of a 23-year old army recruit presenting with altered consciousness and hyperthermia after a training march. Following initial clinical improvement, rising CK and liver enzyme levels as well as increasing INR were recorded. Facing the risk of multi-organ failure, the patient was transferred to a specialized ICU...

AF might be a life threatening disease. Patients have been under oral antithrombotic treatment in order to avoid thrombotic events. Although this treatment proved to be effective in the last decades there was always the inconvenience of a regular blood control. In the last months NOACs have been flooding the market promising to be as effective as their older concurrents in certain circumstances and highlighting the fact that the control of INR has become obsolete. However, as there is no specific antidote up to date, NOACs might present a life threatening event in case of an intracerebral haemorrhage...

Percutaneous aortic valve replacement (TAVI) is one of the most innovative procedure in interventional cardiology. The Direct Flow Medical transcatheter aortic valve (DFM) is a new nonmetallic valve which allows perfect repositioning and valve retrieval prior to the final deployment. This study is a prospective non-randomized evaluation of the DFM system in the Luxembourg registry. The study focused on 15 patients who received between March 2013 and October 2013 a percutaneous aortic valve replacement by DFM prosthesis...

As in many other Western countries, colorectal cancer is one of the most common malignant tumours in Luxembourg. It is thus an important target for prevention measures. In light of the discussions on the introduction of organized screening programmes in Luxembourg a description of the current cancer incidence and relative survival rates, as well as a comparison with neighbouring countries are important. The tumour incidence is comparable to that in other countries with similar socio-economic development. The standardized incidence rate (world population) in 2010 was 26...

We present a case of intraparenchymal radioinduced cyst of the brain observed in our department. It is a rare and relatively benign pathology which is usually treated conservatively or by surgery. We emphasize long-term imaging follow up in patients treated by radiosurgery, which can lead to the demonstration of multiple adverse events such as tumefactive cyst formation.

The majority of fractures of the anterior pelvic ring is treated non-operatively. However, a number of patients do not get pain free and cannot be mobilized. Since the supra-acetabular external fixator is associated with significant complications we developed an alternative technique based on recent anatomical studies. This article is a clinical feasibility study to evaluate a novel stabilization technique for fractures of the anterior pelvic ring in the elderly patient. This technique obtains rapid pain reduction and early ambulation in this group of patients...

There is no doubt that a healthy diet and regular physical activity improve risk factors for cerebro-cardio-vascular disease and death. However, there is less evidence from prospective randomised controlled trials that they also reduce the actual risk of stroke, myocardial infarction and death. The only evidence from randomised controlled trials is, that a mediterranean diet with nuts and/or native olive oil considerably reduces stroke risk by 47% respectively 31%, however not the risk of myocardial infarction and death...

Since more than 3 decades now, music with seniors (or younger persons), either as an educational or recreational activity, but also as a therapeutically approach has progressed. Even nowadays, in the medical field, more and more studies prove its efficiency as complementary therapy with no known side-effects. The areas where music therapy has a positive outcome, reach from pulmonary disorders to a lot of neurological chronic diseases, including aphasia, dementia or Parkinson. And at the end of life, music therapy has found a remarkable place for expressing or supporting strong emotional feelings...
