Penetrating cardiac trauma is a medical emergency that commonly affects young men throughout the world. A retrospective review of the records of all patients presenting with cardiac injury was done from January 2000 to December 2015 at our institute. There were 10 cases of such trauma, all of whom were males, 17 to 48 years of age. The most common mechanism of injury was gunshot wounds followed by stab wounds. The Mean Revised Trauma Score was 7.23±0.855. Only 2 out of the total 10 patients died (20% mortality)...

A cross sectional study was conducted in a private medical university among undergraduate MBBS and BDS students, to ascertain their opinion regarding various teaching methods. Convenience sampling technique was utilized with data collection spanning over March to August 2015 on a sample of 398 students. A self-administered questionnaire was used for the purpose. Descriptive analysis was applied for numerical data while chi square was used for categorical data. P value under 0.05 was considered significant. Our results showed that around 120 (30%) of the participants supported PBL as the most effective teaching method while 64(16%) considered clinical rotations, and 60(15%) voted for lectures...

Increased F18-FDG uptake is on PET-CT images should always be assessed carefully for physiological and pathological causes. Breast uptake may be focal or diffuse. Although propensity of tumours increase in focal uptake; diffuse involvement may be seen in lymphoma and some types of breast cancer. Frequently, diffuse breast uptake is non-pathologic due to infection, physiological uptake or lactation. We describe the case of a 27-years old female who underwent 18F FDGPET-CT scan for staging workup of diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL)...

Gliosarcoma is a highly aggressive primary brain tumour. It is a relatively rare tumour and comprises of two histological components, glial and sarcomatous. Gliosarcomas carry a poorer prognosis than that of Glioblastoma Multiforme (GBM). The current review highlights important histological and radiological features of gliosarcoma in the light of recent literature, and also touches upon the treatment options and outcomes of various types of gliosarcoma.

This communication highlights the unique features of insulin injection technique in the paediatric age group. It describes the anatomical, neurodevelopmental and psychosocial characteristics of children and adolescents of various age groups. These are correlated to highlight 'best practices' or 'injection manner' which diabetes care providers and care givers should observe, in order to achieve a 'happy' and healthy insulin injection experience for the child. The softer side of paediatric insulin injection technique adds to existing guidelines on insulin delivery...

Mullerian adenosarcoma (MA) of ovary with sarcomatous (rhabdomyoblastic) overgrowth is an extremely rare malignant type of female genital tract neoplasm. These tumours are highly aggressive and presence of heterologous elements is associated with worse prognosis. A 44 year old female presented with lower abdominal pain and distension. She had history of removal of tumour from pouch of Douglas in 2006 for which she did not receive any additional treatment nor did she keep continuous follow up. Current preoperative radiological examination revealed bilateral ovarian masses...

Allgrove syndrome is a rare autosomal recessive syndrome of unknown prevalence. The first case of Allgrove syndrome was reported in 1978 by Allgrove. It is characterized by triad of achalasia, alacrima and adrenal hypoplasia. There are also associated autonomic and neurological manifestations. We report the case of a 7 years old boy being treated for achalasia cardia, presented with fits and altered sensorium which on further investigations was found to be due to adrenal insensitivity (Raised ACTH level, low Cortisol level, and normal Aldosterone and Renin ratio)...

Atherosclerotic renal artery stenosis is a potentially correctable cause of secondary hypertension. Most patients with renal artery stenosis are managed with medical therapy alone. However, percutaneous renal angioplasty could be more effective than conventional medical therapy in several specific conditions. Common complications following renal angioplasty include puncture site haematoma, branch vessel occlusion, and renal artery dissection. However, late perirenal haemorrhage following the procedure is rarely reported...

The rupture of an abdominal aortic aneurysm into the inferior vena cava with fistula formation is a rare condition but is associated with high mortality. Classical symptoms and findings vary in a wide range, and early diagnosis and intervention can be life-saving. In this study, we present a case of abdominal aortic aneurysm associated with aorto-caval fistula formation accompanied by mortality.

Use of GIS to visualize the pattern and distribution of health indices in Pakistan would help in better choreographing of health policy and resource allocation decisions. In this study, district-wise spatial distribution of under five-year old children who got sick or injured in the past two weeks, and health consultation pattern was studied using the Pakistan Social and Living Standards Survey 2014-2015. Sex, urban/rural residency status, and province-based differences in the district-wise distribution of under-five year old children who fell sick/injured in the past two weeks and their having received health consultation for it, were observed...

Bacterial contamination of platelets concentrates (PCs) can result in transfusion transmissible infection. Storage temperature for platelets provides favourable environment for the bacterial growth. This study was conducted at Rawalpindi Institute of Cardiology, Rawalpindi, Pakistan from May, 2016 to July 2016. A total of 200 (48 hours stored) whole blood derived PCs collected were selected for the study. Sample were inoculated into Oxoid Signal blood culture bottles and incubated at 36±1°C for 07 days. Signal culture bottle with positive signals and visual appearance of turbidity were sub-cultured...
