This brief article covers the diabetes related aspects of contraception in women. It classifies various methods of contraception and describes how presence of diabetes influences their use. The article lists the high risk conditions in diabetes which may discourage use of combined hormonal contraceptives. It discusses the relation of glycaemic control and medical termination of pregnancy (MTP), and calls for universal provision of contraceptive services to all women with diabetes.

A solitary fibrous tumour (SFT) is a rare mesenchymal tumour that frequently originates in the mesothelium-covered surfaces, such as the pleura and peritoneum. It may develop in various body parts, including the head and neck. These tumours may arise in several different patterns, which results in difficulties in diagnosing them. This case is a solitary tumour developing from the palatine tonsil in a 17-year-old male patient; it is the second case in the literature. The tumour has the histopathological characteristics of a patternless pattern, a slight pleomorphism, and a composition of hypercellular and hypocellular sites...

Gout is a chronic rheumatic disease resulting from accumulation of monosodium urate crystals in tissues. The most important risk factor for the disease is hyperuricaemia. Precipitation of uric acid in the joint in the form of monosodium urate crystals is the main factor responsible for triggering attacks of arthritis. Tophi occur as a result of urate crystals that precipitate into joints and surrounding tissues. Tophi can erode the bone where they are located and cause compression in soft tissue due to a mass effect...

X-linked agammaglobulinemia (XLA) is a primary immunodeficiency with more than 600 mutations in Bruton tyrosine kinase (Bkt) gene which are responsible for early-onset agammaglobulinemia and repeated infections. Herein we present a case of a 3-year-old boy with history of repeated diarrhoea and an episode of meningoencephalitis with hemiplegia. The workup showed extremely low levels of immunoglobulin with low CD+19 cells. Genetic analysis showed Btk mutation 18 c.1883delCp.T628fs. To the best of our knowledge this is the first report of a case of XLA confirmed by molecular technique from Pakistan...

Nasopharynx (NP) is anatomically difficult to explore adequately. The pharyngeal bursa (PB) is a recess lined with respiratory epithelium along the posterior wall of the nasopharynx between the longus capitis muscles. If the opening through which the bursa drains into the nasopharynx becomes obstructed, a Thornwaldt's cyst (TC) might develop. Small-sized cysts are mostly asymptomatic, whereas large-sized cysts may lead to various nasal and otologic symptoms depending on their localization. In this report, we present a 71-year-old case with a huge TC who presented to our clinic with the complaints of snoring, nasal obstruction, periodic halitosis, postnasal drip, headache, and hearing loss in the left ear and underwent total excision of the cyst through transnasal endoscopy...

Free drug samples are distributed among doctors as a promotional tool. We investigated the effects of dispensing samples on prescriptions by the doctors and their opinion about samples through a cross-sectional survey. A questionnaire was distributed among the doctors in the Department of Medicine, Nishtar Hospital Multan. It contained drug choices for two hypothetical scenarios, options and reasons for using free samples and doctors' views about them. Response rate remained 83% (166/198). In scenario 1 (rheumatoid arthritis), 100 % and in scenario 2 (acid peptic disease), 13% of sample users dispensed against their preference while in both cases 78 % prescribed the same brand afterwards...

A cross-sectional study was carried out to study students' perceptions on the usefulness of Anatomy demonstrations (AD) in the undergraduate medical education by comparing the Conventional Medical College (CMC) and problem-based learning as hybrid curriculum (HMC). Purposive sampling technique was used and all students were included. The completed questionnaire responses were returned by 92 CMC and 87 HMC students. CMC cohort understood the structural relationship more than HMC (p=0.03). AD helped 50 students (54%) of CMC to get through the theory examination, however 73 (84%) students of HMC found them useful in preparation for theory examinations (p<0...

The rapid change worldwide, as a consequence of advances in science and technology, necessitates the graduation of well-qualified graduates who have the appropriate knowledge and skills to fulfill specific work requirements. Hence, redesigning academic models by focusing on educational outcomes became the target and priority for universities around the world. In this systematic review we collected and retrieved literature using a selection of electronic databases. The objectives of this report is to: 1) provide an overview of the evolution of outcome-based education (OBE), (2) illustrate the philosophy and principle of OBE, (3) list the OBE advantages and benefits, (4) describe the assessment strategies used in OBE, and (5) discuss the role of teachers and students as key elements...

It is important to appreciate how case reports have paved the way for modern research. They are still largely considered the first line of evidence. Indeed global endemics such as HIV and Zika Virus have been traced back to initial case reports. Strictly speaking; case reports are anecdotes - a factual story telling about nature's own experiment. Case reports can be characterized by two huge advantages, their ability to present novel, rare cases in a manner that can lead to the expansion in research of such cases and their use in generating new, innovative hypothesis that can be used to direct further research...
