99mTc-DMSA scan is the best investigation to assess renal scarring after urinary tract infection (UTI) in children. The aim of this study was to describe the findings of DMSA scans done six months after the first UTI. A descriptive cross-sectional study was done among 110 boys and 80 girls selected by systematic sampling. Urine culture was positive in 164 (86.3%) children. There was no statistically significant association between the DMSA scan result and gender, family history of UTI (p=1.00), family history of vesico-ureteric reflux (p=1...

The aim of this study was to investigate the awareness of oral potentially malignant disorders (OPMD) and oral cancer among medical and dental students of the University of Peradeniya. A pre-tested, self-administered questionnaire was used among 1006 students. Majority were medical students (74.3%), females (60.5%), and in the second year (25.2%). About 54% of respondents had poor knowledge. Dental students had a significantly higher knowledge and female students showed greater awareness. About 90% of medical students had never examined a patient with OPMD, and 79...

The composition of renal stones varies widely among populations. The aim of our study was to determine the composition of staghorn renal stones using Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy in a cohort of Sri Lankan patients. Forty two staghorn calculi removed from kidneys of adult patients during open surgery were analysed. There were 32 men. Nineteen (45%) were calcium oxalate monohydrate (whewellite) stones. Stones containing a mixture of calcium oxalate and calcium hydroxyl phosphate (apatite) were found in 16 (38%)...

This preliminary study aims to describe the HLA-B27 allele frequency in Sri Lankan patients with spondyloarthritides (SA). An anonymised database of 373 Sri Lankan patients with SA referred for HLA-B27 testing was retrospectively analysed. Eighty five (22.8%) patients were positive for the HLA-B27 allele. A male preponderance was observed among the positives. The HLA-B27 allele frequency in this sample of patients with SA was relatively low compared to published studies in other populations. Further research is needed to identify the predominant subtypes of the allele to determine which subtypes are the most prevalent in a larger sample of Sri Lankan patients with SA, and to define their association with the specific types of SA...

INTRODUCTION: Cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL) in Sri Lanka is caused by Leishmania donovani MON 37. Confirmation of diagnosis is done through microscopy, either directly or after in vitro culture. Molecular diagnostic methods are sensitive, but require well established laboratories. Loop mediated isothermal amplification assay (LAMP) is rapid, specific for parasite speciesspecific DNA amplification, and requires only basic laboratory equipment. The aim of the study was to determine the potential utility of LAMP to diagnose leishmaniasis...

INTRODUCTION: Gastro-oesophageal reflux disease (GORD) is the pathological reflux of gastric contents into the oesophagus. The oesophagus and the upper respiratory tract have a common origin from the foregut. There is increasing evidence for multiple associations of GORD with the upper respiratory tract. OBJECTIVES: To study the presence of and association of upper respiratory symptoms (URS) with GORD. METHODS: Seventy adults scoring ≥12...

INTRODUCTION: The increased access to antiretroviral therapy has changed the once deadly infection to a chronic medical condition, resulting in a dramatic change in causes of morbidity and mortality among HIV infected individuals. Obesity and its cardiovascular sequelae are increasingly reported in the literature. However, data on the burden, trends and risk factors for obesity are sparse in countries worst hit by the epidemic. OBJECTIVES: To investigate the trend and risk factors for obesity among a cohort of HIV infected adults on antiretroviral therapy...

INTORDUCTION: Prognosis in cancer is usually assessed by use of Kaplan-Meier survival function estimate curves, which reflect survival, or the proportion of patients that will remain alive after a particular event at a given time. By contrast, hazard function represents the proportion expected to be deceased among those surviving at a given time after an event. Objectives To evaluate survival and hazard of death, in patients with colon cancer (CC) and rectal cancer (RC), as indices of prognosis...
