Oestrus urine was proved as a potential endocrine modulator in alleviating the toxicity induced by 3-methylcholanthrene (3-MC) in male rats. We, in this study, aimed to prove the attributing potential of toxicity alleviation to squalene, an oestrus-specific pheromone in rats. A single dose of 3-methylcholanthrene (25 mg/kg BW, i.p.) was administered to male Wistar rats with concurrent exposure to squalene sprayed in bedding material (Group III). Group II rats did receive 3-MC treatment but did not expose to squalene...

Cigarette smoking is suggested to influence androgen milieu, which is closely associated with pathogenesis and prognosis of prostate cancer. In this study, we investigated the association between serum testosterone level before or during androgen-deprivation therapy (ADT) as well as prognoses and cigarette smoking status among men with metastatic prostate cancer. Serum testosterone level before ADT in current smokers (n = 6, median [interquartile range, IQR]; 454 ng/ml [426-478 ng/ml]) was significantly higher than that in nonsmokers (n = 26, median [IQR]; 397 ng/ml [312-435 ng/ml])...

The DNA repair capacity in the mature spermatozoa is highly compromised due to the base-excision repair (BER) route being truncated. In the mature spermatozoa, only the first enzyme of the route (OGG1) is present. Consequently, reduced activity of the enzymes of the BER route both during spermatogenesis and in the mature spermatozoa may be detrimental for fertility. The objective of our study was to investigate the correlation between two representative SNPs of those enzymes, SNPs OGG1 Ser326Cys (rs1052133) and XRCC1 Arg399Gln (rs25487) and male infertility...

Varicocele repair (VR) is associated with improved sperm parameters in subfertile patients. We examined the association of the levels of reproductive hormones, scrotal colour Doppler ultrasound (CDU) and seminal parameters in subfertile men, before and after VR. Fifty subfertile males, with left-side varicocele, were enrolled in this retrospective study. The serum levels of FSH, LH and total testosterone (TT), along with continuous left spermatic venous reflux (SVR) and testicular volumes at CDU were evaluated, before and six months after VR by a left-side retrograde internal spermatic vein sclero-embolisation (SVE)...

Sperm cryopreservation allows for a long-term storage of genetic. However, changes due to factors as cold shock, osmotic and oxidative stress cause reduction in viability and fertilising ability of frozen/thawed spermatozoa. Therefore, evaluation of cryoinjury of cat spermatozoa is a key factor in achieving better cryopreservation results. This study analysed the changes in structural and functional after freezing in ejaculated domestic cats spermatozoa. Semen samples (n = 60) were analysed before and after freezing, progressive motility was determined with computer-assisted sperm analysis and viability, and acrosome intact spermatozoa, mitochondrial function and superoxide anion (O2-) were assessed by flow cytometry...

Alpha-lipoic acid (ALA) is a disulphide compound with multifunctional antioxidant properties and is soluble in both water and lipid. Several recent studies evaluated efficacy of ALA in various diseases related to oxidative damage such as diabetes, multiple sclerosis and Alzheimer and concluded that ALA can reduce oxidative stress by quenching reactive oxygen and nitrogen species, restoring antioxidants such as glutathione, vitamins C and E, and/or improving activity of antioxidant enzymes. Varicocele, an enlargement of the veins in scrotum, is considered as the most common repairable cause of male infertility and is associated with high levels of oxidative stress...

Varicocele is the most common cause of male infertility. Varicoceles are classified into two types: clinical and subclinical varicoceles. Some researchers reported right subclinical varicoceles are often accompanied with left clinical varicoceles. However, the treatment is controversial. Our aim was to compare the clinical outcome of unilateral varicocelectomy (UV) and bilateral varicocelectomy (BV) in infertile males with left clinical and right subclinical varicocele. A total of four randomised controlled trials (RCT) were enrolled in this study, including 637 cases with left clinical and right subclinical varicocele (318 cases in the BV group and 319 cases in the UV group)...

Testosterone replacement therapy has a growing interest in daily practice; however, debates on its safety for prostate cancer still continue. Dutasteride-a 5α-reductase inhibitor-was shown to be effective in preventing prostate cancer. We therefore aimed to evaluate the effect of testosterone replacement therapy and dutasteride treatment on prostate tissue in castrated rats. Rats were randomised in four groups after bilateral orchidectomy as follows: Group I received testosterone + dutasteride, Group II received only testosterone, Group III had no medical treatment, and Group IV was the control group...
