While dementia is an umbrella term for a range of degenerative brain disorders, many share similar presentations. Nurses are ideally placed to identify those at risk and empower them to access treatment and plan and prepare for their future needs--as such, they need up-to-date knowledge of the signs and symptoms of the different types of dementia to identify risk factors and make an informed diagnosis. In 2012, the chief nursing officer for England launched the Compassion in Practice strategy for nursing, which included the 6Cs. This has been followed in May 2016 by an NHS England publication for nursing, midwifery and care staff that builds on the 6Cs and provides a framework around 10 commitments. This article summarises the framework and recommendations for good practice.

Patient with spinal cord injuries have individualised care routines to help prevent complications. Disruption to these routines following admission to non-specialist settings can have long-term consequences. This article focuses on the key long-term problems of pressure ulcers, bladder and bowel dysfunction, and autonomic dysreflexia. Nurses working on general wards need to consider how to manage these problems when caring for patients with spinal cord injury.
