There are several steps involved when performing high-level disinfection (HLD) of semicritical devices. The recently updated AORN "Guideline for manual high-level disinfection" provides perioperative nurses with evidence-based best practices for performing safe and effective HLD of reusable semicritical items. The guideline also addresses preventing injury to patients and health care workers associated with the handling of high-level disinfectants. This article provides an overview of the guideline and discusses recommendations for selection of a processing method, sterile processing areas, preparation of items for HLD, preparation of high-level disinfectants, manual HLD, drying and storage of items after HLD, and processing records...

Governmental COVID-19 mandates in Ontario, Canada, resulted in a backlog of perioperative procedures. Organization leaders were required to expand services after the pandemic; however, the ongoing nursing shortage and college-based structure of perioperative education programs complicated their response. In 2021, we developed an in-house perioperative education program using a blended-learning theory comprising online modules and videos, skills laboratory sessions, and clinical placement experiences. Nurses were required to apply for the program and remain employed at the facility for two years...

Perioperative nurse engagement and certification are associated with a culture of safety, which is crucial in perioperative environments. Therefore, examining relationships between engagement, the practice environment, and certification is warranted. The purposes of this study were to examine the relationships between the perioperative practice environment and reported nurse engagement, determine differences in engagement based on certification, and identify facilitators and barriers to attaining and sustaining certification...

Moyamoya disease is a progressive cerebrovascular disorder for which there is no cure. It is characterized by narrowing of and occlusions in the blood vessels that supply the brain, which causes a fine vascular network to develop to serve as collateral pathways. Moyamoya disease can lead to a reduction of blood flow to the brain and increase the risk of stroke. Patients with moyamoya disease may present with ischemic or hemorrhagic complications. Treatment options may involve medical management or surgical revascularization (indirect, direct, or a combined approach)...

AORN has identified safety risks unique to the perioperative setting and has developed ergonomic safety measures to help prevent musculoskeletal injuries and disorders. Little is known about adherence to these safety measures or the perceived barriers and facilitators to adherence. This study used a cross-sectional survey to determine the prevalence of pain and occurrence of musculoskeletal injuries and disorders. We asked perioperative staff members about their perceived barriers and facilitators to adherence with safety measures...

Perioperative nurses can share their expertise by writing for publication in a peer-reviewed journal. Writing can help perioperative nurses grow their professional careers and advance the science of the perioperative nursing specialty. Despite the value and importance of publishing, perioperative nurses may lack confidence and fear rejection and negative feedback; increasing their knowledge and understanding of the authoring and publishing processes can assuage these fears. This education article describes concepts associated with scholarly publishing for authors and offers strategies to encourage perioperative nurses to share their practice experiences or research via peer-reviewed journals...
