Optimal clinical management of psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis (PsA) requires understanding of the impact on patients. The NORdic PAtient survey of Psoriasis and PsA (NORPAPP) aimed to obtain current data on disease prevalence and patient perceptions in Sweden, Denmark and Norway. Among 22,050 individuals questioned, the reported prevalence of psoriasis and/or PsA was 9.7% (5.7% physician-diagnosed plus 4.0% self-diagnosed only); prevalence was similar in Sweden (9.4%) and Denmark (9.2%) but significantly higher in Norway (11...

Actinic cheilitis is thought to be a premalignant lesion or a superficial squamous cell carcinoma. The prevalence of actinic cheilitis in Europe is unknown. The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of actinic cheilitis in the Galicia region (north-west Spain). Secondary objectives were the description of risk factors of actinic cheilitis. A cross-sectional multicentre study in patients ≥ 45 years of age was performed in 8 dermatology departments in Galicia region during a 1-year period. The prevalence of actinic cheilitis was 31...

Hidradenitis Suppurativa Clinical Response (HiSCR), is a validated tool that has been used to assess the efficacy of adalimumab among patients with hidradenitis suppurativa. We evaluated the clinical meaning of HiSCR by relating it to patient-reported outcomes to give further context to its achievement in a post hoc analysis of integrated data from two phase 3 clinical trials (PIONEER I and II). Pooling placebo and active treatment arms, 39% of patients (245/629) achieved HiSCR at week 12. Irrespective of treatment, significantly (p < 0...

Primary cutaneous marginal zone lymphomas (PCMZL) frequently exhibit lymphoplasmacytoid/plasmacytic differentiation, implying the capacity to produce monoclonal immunoglobulins. As these paraproteins are secreted, and thus are measurable in blood and urine, they may correlate with disease burden and serve as tumour markers reflecting therapeutic response. This study retrospectively analysed the records of 23 patients with PCMZL. During treatment and follow-up, laboratory tests, including full blood count, lactate dehydrogenase, serum protein electrophoresis and turbidimetric analyses, were conducted...

Strategies for diets in chronic spontaneous urticaria (CSU) are controversial. This systematic review assessed the interest in diet for managing CSU. We searched for original reports in MEDLINE, EMBASE, CENTRAL and LILACS. Among the 278 reports screened, 20 were included, involving 1,734 patients. Reports described 3 types of systematic diet: pseudoallergen-free diet (n = 1,555 patients), low-histamine diet (n = 223) and diet without fish products (n = 47), which induced complete remission in 4...

Data on the treatment of early folliculotropic mycosis fungoides, a recently defined clinicopathological subgroup of folliculotropic mycosis fungoides with an indolent course, is limited. Treatment outcomes were studied in a retrospective cohort of 47 adults with early folliculotropic mycosis fungoides, with a focus on psoralen plus ultraviolet A (PUVA) monotherapy, including dosimetric data, and the findings were compared with data for PUVA in 18 adults with early-classic mycosis fungoides. PUVA was given to 27 patients with early folliculotropic mycosis fungoides: 70% achieved complete response and 26% partial response...

Carvone (l-carvone), a mint flavour in spearmint oil, is considered a mild skin sensitizer. Carvone-sensitization may be linked to oral/perioral signs and oral lichen, but studies are sparse. The prevalence of patch test reactions to carvone and relevant findings from the positive group were investigated. Records for patch tested patients at the Malmö clinic, for the period 1996 to 2016, were studied. Carvone-positive and carvone-negative patients were compared regarding patch test data from baseline series and dental series...

The immune mechanisms involved in atopic dermatitis (AD) are complex and little is known about the possible role of the gut microbiota in the aetiopathogenesis of AD. A systematic review of the literature was performed according to PRISMA guidelines, and included 44 of 2,199 studies (26 observational and 18 interventional studies). Detection of gut microbiota was performed by either 16s rRNA PCR, or by culture. Observational studies were diverse regarding the age of study participants and the bacterial species investigated...

Aryl hydrocarbon receptor (AHR) is a chemical sensor that is expressed abundantly in epidermal keratinocytes. Oxidative AHR ligands induce the production of reactive oxygen species. However, antioxidant AHR ligands inhibit reactive oxygen species generation via activation of nuclear factor-erythroid 2-related factor-2, which is a master switch for antioxidative signalling. In addition, AHR signalling accelerates epidermal terminal differentiation, but excessive acceleration by oxidative ligands, such as dioxins, may induce chloracne and inflammation...

Abnormally high production of melanin or melanogenesis in skin melanocytes results in hyperpigmentation disorders, such as melasma, senile lentigines or freckles. These hyperpigmentary skin disorders can significantly impact an individual's appearance, and may cause emotional and psychological distress and reduced quality of life. A large number of melanogenesis inhibitors have been developed, but most have unwanted side-effects. Further research is needed to better understand the mechanisms of hyperpigmentary skin disorders and to develop potent and safe inhibitors of melanogenesis...

Coeliac disease is an immune-mediated enteropathy driven by gluten, which can be associated with dermatitis herpetiformis. The presence of granular IgA deposits, detected by direct immunofluorescence, is the hallmark of dermatitis herpetiformis; nevertheless, IgA deposits have also been demonstrated in healthy skin of patients with coeliac disease. The main objective of this study was to investigate whether IgA deposits could be found in the skin of patients with coeliac disease who have non-dermatitis herpetiformis inflammatory skin diseases...
