Keratinocyte cancer (KC) is the most common malignancy in Caucasians. The incidence of KC has increased over the past 40 years. This case-control study investigated the environmental and host risk-factors responsible for development of KC in Australia's high-risk population. Cases were immune-competent adults from Townsville, Australia (19.3°S) who had a new basal cell carcinoma (BCC) or squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) histologically-confirmed during 2004 to 2009. Cases were age-matched (±5 years) to immuno-competent, community-based controls from Townsville with no prior history of KC...

Methotrexate (MTX) and biologics are frequently used treatments for psoriasis. Exploring patients' beliefs about their treatment may help to elucidate patients' attitudes towards these therapies. A cross-sectional survey was conducted using the Beliefs about Medicines Questionnaire-Specific (BMQ-Specific) in patients treated with methotrexate or biologics. BMQ-specific scores (Necessity and Concerns scales) were calculated and patients were classified as "accepting", "indifferent", "ambivalent" or "sceptical" towards their treat-ment...

Three clinical studies were conducted to test a newly-developed app for smartwatches, which included an algorithm to measure nocturnal scratching using acceleration data. The first study in 5 patients with atopic dermatitis demonstrated high reliability of the app for measurement of scratching compared with video monitoring (positive predictive value 90.2 ± 6.6%, sensitivity 84.6 ± 10.2%, correlation of scratching duration per h r = 0.851-0.901, p < 0.001). The second study in 20 patients with atopic dermatitis and 10 healthy volunteers showed that total scratching duration in patients was significantly longer than in healthy volunteers and correlated positively with Eczema Area and Severity Index (EASI) scores...

The association of atopic dermatitis and chronic spontaneous urticaria with socioeconomic status has been little studied. The aim of this study was to investigate the prevalence of skin diseases and their association with socioeconomic status in adolescents in China. A cross-sectional study was conducted at a comprehensive university. All newly enrolled students underwent dermatological examination and completed a survey. Socioeconomic status was measured in terms of parental education level and income. Two-level logistic regression models were used...

Atopic eczema (AE) is one of the most common non-communicable inflammatory skin diseases, and has a huge socioeconomic impact. Studies on the everyday economic impact of AE on patients, however, are limited. To estimate the annual extra out-of-pocket spending due to AE among patients in Europe, a cross-sectional study using computer-assisted phone interviewing of patients with AE was performed in 9 European countries. A total of 1,189 patients (56% women) with AE, who were either eligible for, or on, systemic treatment, participated in the study between October 2017 and March 2018...

Nail psoriasis affects 50-79% of patients with skin psoriasis and up to 80% of patients with psoriatic arthritis, and can also represent a negative prognostic factor in individuals with plaque psoriasis. Treatments for nail psoriasis are limited, as nails are often difficult to treat with topical therapies alone, and relapse is common. Among different systemic agents, secukinumab, a fully human monoclonal antibody targeting interleukin (IL)-17A, is the only antibody supported by a trial specifically conducted in patients with nail psoriasis (the TRANSFIGURE trial) and has the longest follow-up available to date...

Treatment of chronic pruritus can be a challenge for clinicians. Several systemic treatments have been suggested to reduce itch, such as gabapentinoids and antidepressants. The aim of this study was to assess the current practice of dermatologists regarding systemic treatment in patients with chronic pruritus, and to identify possible barriers in the prescription of these treatments. An online survey was sent to all dermatologists and dermatology residents in the Netherlands between July 2017 and April 2018...

Primary burning mouth syndrome is a term used for chronic oral mucosal pain with no identifiable organic cause. The aim of the study was to evaluate the usefulness of a psychiatric intervention for treating burning mouth syndrome based on a joint consultation with a psychiatrist and a dermatologist. The study was proposed to all patients who visited this consultation group between 2001 and 2017 for the treatment of primary burning mouth syndrome. The patients answered a questionnaire that was administered via mail...

The Janus kinase 1/3 inhibitor tofacitinib has demonstrated an antipruritic effect in two phase ΙΙΙ studies in psoriasis. However, the mechanisms behind this antipruritic effect are still unknown. We presently investigated whether tofacitinib affects spontaneous itch as well as expression of itch-related cytokines and epidermal nerve fiber density (ENFD) in the imiquimod-induced mouse model of psoriasis. Psoriasis-like skin lesions were produced by daily topical application of imiquimod to the back skin...

Psoriasis is associated with cardiometabolic comorbidity; however, whether this is due to common lifestyle-related risk factors is unclear. This study investigated the association between psoriasis and cardiometabolic comorbidity, taking body mass index and smoking into account. The population comprised expectant mothers in the Danish National Birth Cohort (established 1996-2002). During pregnancy, the women were asked about physician-diagnosed psoriasis. Any association with self-reported cardiometabolic comorbidity 11 years later was assessed using logistic regression...

The aim of this study was to evaluate changes in the skin surface microbiome in patients with atopic dermatitis during treatment. The effect of narrowband ultraviolet B phototherapy was also studied to determine the influence of exposure to ultraviolet. A total of 18 patients with atopic dermatitis were included in the study. Patients were divided into 2 groups based on treatment: 1 group treated with narrowband ultraviolet B phototherapy and topical corticosteroid, and the other group treated with topical corticosteroid only...
