The aim of this study was to determine the clinical, histological and/or immunohistochemical features that enable differential diagnosis of regression of melanocytic naevi from regression of melanomas. All melanocytic neoplasms with histologically-confirmed regression diagnosed in our hospital between 2002 and 2009 were reviewed retrospectively. Lamellar and delicate fibrosis were associated with melanocytic naevi (p < 0.0001 and p = 0.021, respectively). Compact fibrosis, high vessel density and higher number of granzyme B+ lymphocytes were associated with malignant melanoma (p = 0...

Only limited data on laboratory parameter dynamics and safety under prolonged biologic treatment in a "real-world" scenario are available for recommendations on screening and monitoring. This study is a retrospective analysis of routine parameter dynamics and laboratory adverse events (LAE) in psoriasis patients on long-term treatment (n = 199) with tumour necrosis factor (TNF)-α-antagonists (adalimumab, etanercept), and the interleukin (IL)12/23-antagonist ustekinumab. Overall, neutrophil (PMN) counts (-11%) and triglycerides (+9%) changed considerably...

There is uncertainty about the risk of developing non-melanoma skin cancer (NMSC), including basal cell carcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma (SCC), in patients with atopic dermatitis (AD) treated with oral immunosuppressive drugs. A total of 557 patients with AD treated with these drugs in the University Medical Center Utrecht and Groningen, the Netherlands, were analysed. NMSC after oral immunosuppressive treatment was reported in 18 patients (3.2%). The standardized incidence ratio for developing SCC was 13...

Li-Fraumeni syndrome (LFS) is a rare autosomal dominant disorder caused by a mutation in the p53 gene. Melanoma is considered to be a rare, controversial component of LFS. The aim of this study is to describe the utility of systematic screening for melanoma in patients with LFS and atypical mole syndrome. Two 28-year-old identical twin sisters with LFS and atypical moles were monitored by physical examination, total-body digital photography and dermoscopy be-tween 2006 and 2014. A total of 117, predominantly dark-brown, reticular naevi were identified on case 1 and 105 on case 2...

Psoriasiform eruptions are a classical adverse skin reaction of tumour necrosis factor (TNF)-α inhibitors. The aim of this study was to identify the association between the severity or pattern of psoriasiform reactions and the underlying disease. A retrospective study was conducted between January 2012 and May 2015. Adult patients who developed psoriasiform eruptions whilst being treated with TNFα inhibitors were included. For each patient, 3 independent blinded dermatologists graded twice the severity of the lesions according to 6 clinical psoriasiform eruption types...

Atopic dermatitis (AD) is the most common chronic dermatitis in children. The influence of AD on quality of life of parents of children with AD was studied using the Family Dermatology Life Quality Index (FDLQI). Fifty children with AD were included in the study (age range 2-24 months) together with their parents. Children's AD was found to influence the quality of life of both parents; however, it had a more significant influence on quality of life of mothers than that of fathers (mean FDLQI: 17.1 ± 5...

The aim of this 10-year monocentric prospective study was to determine a cut-off value of Fas/CD95 expression by peripheral blood CD4+ T lymphocytes in discriminating patients with mycosis fungoides from controls with cutaneous benign lymphocytic conditions. CD95 expression in peripheral blood CD4+ T lymphocytes was measured using flow cytometry in 330 patients referred for diagnosis: 104 with mycosis fungoides and 226 with eczema, psoriasis, drug reaction, etc. The sensitivity and specificity of different thresholds of CD95 expression were calculated regarding the final diagnosis of patients with mycosis fungoides or controls...

Staphylococcal enterotoxins have been shown to promote lymphoma-associated immune dysregulation. This study examined changes in the skin microbiome of parapsoriasis compared with intact skin. Swab microbiome specimens were taken of the parapsoriasis lesions of 13 patients. Control samples were taken from contralateral healthy sides of the body. Microbiotas were characterized by sequencing the V1-V3 region of the 16S ribosomal RNA bacterial genes on the Illumina MiSeq platform. The most common genera in the microbiome data were Propionibacterium (27...

Cutaneous T-cell lymphomas (CTCL), especially mycosis fungoides, can be considered as a state of longstanding low-grade systemic inflammation. Many studies have focused on secondary cancers with CTCL, but information about comorbidities is limited. A total of 144 patients with CTCL at Helsinki University Central Hospital during 2005 to 2015 were studied to determine associated comorbidities and causes of death in this cohort. Compared with an age-standardized control population, the prevalence of type 2 diabetes mellitus was increased among patients with CTCL with no link to obesity...
