Hydrothermal carbonization was applied to taro peel wastes to produce hydrochars in a facile environmentally friendly process. Four different entities were prepared: hydrochar (TPh), phosphoric-activated hydrochar (P-TPh) and silver@hydrochars (Ag@TPh, Ag@P-TPh). The elemental compositions of the single and composite hydrochars were confirmed by EDX. Among the produced hydrochars, the morphology of the Ag@hydrochar composites demonstrated more wrinkled structure and Ag nanoparticles decorated the surface. The optimal experimental conditions for levofloxacin adsorption were determined to be contact time of 45 min, hydrochar dose of 0...

The fluoroquinolones ciprofloxacin, danofloxacin, enoxacin, levofloxacin and lomefloxacin, occur in water bodies worldwide and therefore pose a threat to the aquatic environment. Advanced purification procedures, such as electrochemical oxidation, may act as a remedy since they contribute to eliminating contaminants and prevent micropollutants from entering open water bodies. By electrochemical treatment in a micro-flow reactor equipped with a boron-doped diamond (BDD) electrode, the fluoroquinolones were efficiently degraded...

Activated carbon (AC) has important industrial and environmental applications as it has excellent abilities to sorb contaminants such as per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS). Current research aims to develop activated biochars (AB) from renewable biomass to replace AC that is produced from fossil feedstock. Both AC and AB are primarily comprised of condensed aromatic carbon (ConAC), the component that is the focus of this study. ConAC is characterized to determine its relationship with biochar activation conditions and PFAS sorption, which are understudied at present...

The enrichment of anammox bacteria is a key issue in the application of anammox processes. A new type of reactor - anaerobic baffle biofilm reactor (ABBR) developed from anaerobic baffle reactor (ABR) was filled with columnar packings and established for effective enrichment of anammox bacteria. The flow field analysis showed that, compared with ABR, ABBR narrowed the dead zone so as to improve the substrate transferring performances. Two ABBRs with different types of columnar packings (Packings 1 and Packings 2) were constructed to culture anammox biofilms...

Pesticides pollute natural water reservoirs through persistent accumulation. Therefore, their toxicity and degradability are serious issues. Carbendazim (CBZ) is a pesticide used against fungal infections in agricultural crops, and its overexploitation detrimentally affects aquatic ecosystems and organisms. It is necessary to design a logical, efficient, and field-deployable method for monitoring the amount of CBZ in environmental samples. Herein, a nano-engineered bismuth selenide (Bi2 Se3 )/functionalized carbon nanofiber (f-CNF) nanocomposite was utilized as an electrocatalyst to fabricate an electrochemical sensing platform for CBZ...

The efficient removal of phosphate from water environments was extremely significant to control eutrophication of water bodies and prevent further deterioration of water quality. In this study, oxygen vacancy-rich magnesium oxide (OV-MgO) microspheres were synthesized by a simple solvothermal method coupling high-temperature calcination. The effects of adsorbent dosage, contact time, initial pH and coexisting components on phosphate adsorption performance were examined. The physicochemical properties of OV-MgO microspheres and the phosphate removal mechanisms were analyzed by various characterization techniques...

Sugarcane bagasse is one of the most common Vietnamese agricultural waste, which possesses a large percentage of cellulose, making it an abundant and environmentally friendly source for the fabrication of cellulose carbon aerogel. Herein, waste sugarcane bagasse was used to synthesize cellulose aerogel using different crosslinking agents such as urea, polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and sodium alginate (SA). The 3D porous network of cellulose aerogels was constructed by intermolecular hydrogen bonding, which was confirmed by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and nitrogen adsorption/desorption...

We prepared a novel PDA-Fe3 O4 -CF composite anode by coating original carbon felt anode (CF) with polydopamine (PDA) and Fe3 O4 nanoparticles. The fertosphere, as the interfaces between fertilizer granular and soil particles, represents a key hotspot for nitrogen transformation processes, particularly for ammonia (NH3 ) and nitrous oxide (N2 O) emissions. Understanding the heterogeneity of the fertosphere, especially when incorporating organic amendments like biochars, is crucial for predicting NH3 and N2 O emissions after soil fertilization. In this study, we investigated the effects of three types of biochar (pristine, aged, and acid-washed biochar) on heterogeneity of fertosphere induced by localized urea application...

Through the redistribution of PN sludge and anammox sludge in the two-stage PN/A system, a transition was made to the Anammox-single stage PN/A (A-PN/A) system. This specific functional reorganization, facilitated by the rapid reorganization of microbial communities, has the potential to significantly decrease the current risk of suppression...
