BACKGROUND: Blindness caused by soft tissue fillers is an extremely low-probability event, but it results in great concern because of its devastating consequences. Currently, the mechanism of an embolism is usually considered to be an accidental injection of fillers into the blood vessels of the face, such as a facial artery, and then retrograding into the ophthalmic artery system, which causes retinal ischemic necrosis. In addition, previous studies have shown that there are anastomoses between facial arteries and branches of the ophthalmic artery in cadavers...

Asian noses are mainly characterized by a low nasal dorsum, a short nose and an underprojected nasal tip due to underdeveloped (short and weak) alar cartilages. The goals of the surgery are to increase the tip projection, elongate the nose and augment the dorsum. In Asian noses the structural approach helps strengthen the weak cartilages and add definition to the nasal tip. There are various methods to increase tip projection and definition. Columellar strut, caudal septal extension graft, tip grafts and lateral crural grafts in order to elongate the upper legs of the nasal tip tripod can be used...

OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to quantify the use of computer imaging by facial plastic surgeons. METHODS: AAFPRS Facial plastic surgeons were surveyed about their use of computer imaging during rhinoplasty consultations. The survey collected information about surgeon demographics, practice settings, practice patterns, and rates of computer imaging (CI) for primary and revision rhinoplasty. For those surgeons who used CI, additional information was also collected, which included who performed the imaging and whether the patient was given the morphed images after the consultation...

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the efficacy of cross vertical mattress suturing with basilar tightening during the correction of inverted nipple. METHODS: Thirty patients with inverted nipples underwent cross vertical mattress suturing with basilar tightening. The postoperative results were recorded. RESULTS: All the patients were followed up for 6 months to 2 years. The results of 28 cases were satisfactory, and there was no recurrence. Two patients relapsed, and a mild depression was formed...

BACKGROUND: The use of dermal fillers in minimally invasive facial aesthetic procedures has become increasingly popular of late, yet as the indications and the number of procedures performed increase, the number of complications is also likely to increase. Paying special attention to specific patient characteristics and to the technique used can do much to avoid these complications. Indeed, a well-trained physician can also minimize the impact of such problems when they do occur. METHODS: A multidisciplinary group of experts in aesthetic treatments reviewed the main factors associated with the complications that arise when using dermal fillers...

The aim of the present study was to evaluate the prevalence of body dysmorphic disorder in plastic surgery and dermatology patients, by performing a systematic review of the literature and meta-analysis. The most relevant studies published originally in any language were analyzed. The literature search was performed using the PubMed, Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials (CENTRAL), and Scielo databases. The final sample comprised 33 publications that were submitted to meta-analysis. The study verified that 15...

BACKGROUND: Facial asymmetry is very common in maxillofacial deformities. It is difficult to achieve accurate reconstruction. With the help of 3D printing models and surgical templates, the osteotomy line and the amount of bone grinding can be accurate. Also, by means of the precise repositioning instrument, the repositioning of genioplasty can be accurate and quick. In this study, we present a three-dimensional printing technique and the precise repositioning instrument to guide the osteotomy and repositioning, and illustrate their feasibility and validity...

BACKGROUND: An inverted nipple is a common congenital condition in young women that may cause breastfeeding difficulty, psychological distress, repeated inflammation, and loss of sensation. Various surgical techniques have been reported for correction of inverted nipples, and all have advantages and disadvantages. Here, we report a new technique for correction of an inverted nipple using an operative microscope and traction that results in low recurrence and preserves lactation function and sensation...

BACKGROUND: This study aimed to develop estimation formulae for the total human body volume (BV) of adult males using anthropometric measurements based on a three-dimensional (3D) scanning technique. Noninvasive and reliable methods to predict the total BV from anthropometric measurements based on a 3D scan technique were addressed in detail. METHODS: A regression analysis of BV based on four key measurements was conducted for approximately 160 adult male subjects...

Postural bowleg is a subclinical entity with both aesthetic and functional outcomes and appears to be common in East Asian countries. Internal rotation of the hip joint is associated with varus alignment at the knee joint of the bowleg. Strengthening exercise for the hip external rotator muscles seems to be effective in improving varus alignment of bowleg, but no standardized exercise program exists. A standardized active resistance strengthening exercise for hip external rotator muscles could improve varus alignment of the lower limb in bowlegged Korean women...

BACKGROUND: The classical levator resection (LR) technique for correcting ptosis involves separating the levator palpebrae superioris muscle (LPS) completely, which will inevitably collapse the muscle. The modified surgical method involving retention of the LPS suspensory system can allow for more contractility of the levator muscle and thus maximize protection of the eyelid structure. METHODS: Ninety patients (132 eyelids) with different degrees of ptosis were enrolled...

The authors performed cadaveric dissections to investigate the existence of an anatomical structure creating and maintaining the cervical mental angle, aiming to understand the anatomical bases of the cervico-mental angle and its modifications over time. Six fresh cadaver dissections were performed; four were done in the Caen University anatomy laboratory one in Paris XV University and one in the Coventry University hospital, England. At the end of this investigation, the authors were able to demonstrate the existence of an anatomical structure in the neck, the cervico-mental angle suspensory ligament...

BACKGROUND: Vascular age (VA) represents chronological age adjusted for an individual's atherosclerotic burden. Keeping in mind the fact that facial vascularization could influence the success of esthetic interventions, we aimed to investigate the predictive value of VA in development of side effects following facial lipofilling. METHODS: In the period from October 1, 2014, to October 1, 2015, 106 consecutive subjects who underwent a facial lipofilling were included in the study...

BACKGROUND: Inferior pedicle and free nipple grafting are commonly used as breast reduction techniques for patients with breast hypertrophy and gigantomastia. Limitations of these techniques are, respectively, possible vascular compromise and total/partial necrosis of the nipple-areola complex (NAC). The authors describe the innovative inferocentral pedicled reduction mammaplasty (ICPBR) enhanced by preservation of Würinger's septum for severe hypertrophic breasts. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Among 287 breast reductions performed between January 2001 and 2015, 83 (28...
