BACKGROUND: The number of patients undergoing mastectomy and immediate breast reconstruction with tissue expanders followed by post-mastectomy radiotherapy (PMRT) is exponentially increasing. To reduce the rate of complications, in 2011, the senior author of this manuscript described the use of protective lipofilling in patients undergoing unplanned PMRT to the expander with a specific protocol aiming to decrease the rate of complications. OBJECTIVES: A study was performed to evaluate the thickness of the breast irradiated tissue to create a standard pattern of "protective" lipofilling infiltration on limited key areas that could re-establish a thickness similar to non-radiotreated tissues...

Consideration of facial muscle dynamics is underappreciated among clinicians who provide injectable filler treatment. Injectable fillers are customarily used to fill static wrinkles, folds, and localized areas of volume loss, whereas neuromodulators are used to address excessive muscle movement. However, a more comprehensive understanding of the role of muscle function in facial appearance, taking into account biomechanical concepts such as the balance of activity among synergistic and antagonistic muscle groups, is critical to restoring facial appearance to that of a typical youthful individual with facial esthetic treatments...

BACKGROUND: Gynaecomastia is a benign enlargement of the male breast, of which the psychological burden on the patient can be considerable, with the increased risk of disorders such as depression, anxiety, and social phobia. Minimal scarring can be achieved by liposuction alone, though it is known to have a limited effect on the dense glandular and fibroconnective tissues. We know of few studies published on "liposuction alone", so we designed this study to evaluate the outcome of combining liposuction with glandular liposculpturing through two axillary incisions as a single treatment for the management of grades I and II gynaecomastia...

BACKGROUND: Implant rippling is a frequent complication following breast augmentation or implant-based reconstruction and results in significant patient dissatisfaction. Traditionally, the treatment has been to replace the implant, often placing it in a subpectoral pocket to reduce the risk of recurrence. Other techniques, such as increasing the implant size or tightening the capsule, can also be used. Recently, however, there has been much interest in alternative treatments, including fat grafting or insertion of an acellular dermal matrix...

INTRODUCTION: The aesthetic manifestations of the aging process in the cheekbone, cheek and infraorbital areas are especially concerning for patients, so rejuvenating interventions in these areas are most in demand. OBJECTIVE: To introduce the experience of our clinic for aesthetic manipulation using Aptos (anti-ptosis) thread lifting methods in the midface area. METHODS: Among the surgical interventions that we used were Aptos thread lifting methods both in combination with lower blepharoplasty, and without it...

BACKGROUND: Breast reconstruction with a Becker-type expander is a common technique following mastectomy. However, inconsistency remains in the literature regarding risk factors for the survival of a Becker-type expander following immediate breast reconstruction. This study's purpose is to investigate possible risk factors for the Becker-type expander survival and to evaluate the complications related to expander removal following immediate breast reconstruction. METHODS: We performed a retrospective chart review of consecutive women who underwent a mastectomy followed by immediate breast reconstruction with a Becker-type expander from November 2010 to November 2016...

BACKGROUND: The polyacrylamide hydrogel Aquamid® has been used as a permanent filler to enhance facial soft tissue volume and correct wrinkles since 2001. Various long-term studies have proved the safety of the product. Nonetheless, if complications such as migration occur, they can be difficult to treat. METHODS: Eleven patients suffering from late-onset complications after taking Aquamid® injections in the lips underwent product removal and subsequent labial reconstruction between 2009 and 2017...

BACKGROUND: Post-operative oedema and ecchymosis represent early post-operative complications, impacting negatively on the final aesthetic outcome of each surgical procedure. In particular, such complications are very frustrating for patients and-sometimes-are difficult to be managed by surgeons. Several strategies are available for managing oedema, although some side effects have been reported. A new promising compound for the management of oedema is Venoplant, and this study aims to assess its effectiveness in decreasing post-operative oedema...

The patient's satisfaction with the esthetic result is a major criterion of success in septorhinoplasty. However, the idea of esthetic perfection varies greatly and primarily depends on subjective perception. Hence, patient-reported instruments are important and necessary to assess the outcome in septorhinoplasty. To analyze the potential of the visual analog scale (VAS) as a patient-reported outcome measure in septorhinoplasty, the perception of the nasal appearance was assessed by a VAS pre- and postoperatively in 213 patients undergoing septorhinoplasty...

INTRODUCTION: Frontal sinus enlargement has been classified into hypersinus, pneumosinus dilatans and pneumocele. CASE REPORT: A young male presented with aesthetic concerns regarding his forehead swelling. The patient had no functional disturbances. Radiographic assessment proved expansion of the frontal sinus with extreme thinning of the frontal bone. DISCUSSION: The causes of frontal sinus expansion have been listed along with a proposed management plan for each type...

INTRODUCTION: Augmentation mammoplasty is one of the most popular aesthetic operations in the world. In Korea, one of the fillers used for breast augmentation is AQUAfilling® gel (Biomedica. spol, s,r,o, Czech Republic). AQUAfilling® gel is a hydrophilic gel composed of 98% sodium chloride solution (0.9%) and 2% cation copolyamide. METHODS: This is a case report describing a patient that suffered complications after AQUAfilling® gel injection for breast augmentation...

BACKGROUND: Photography plays a pivotal role in patient education, photo-documentation, preoperative planning and postsurgical evaluation in plastic surgeries. It has long been serving as a bridge that facilitated communication not only between patients and doctors, but also among plastic surgeons from different countries. Although several basic principles and photographic methods have been proposed, there is no internationally accepted photography that could provide both static and dynamic information in blepharoplasty...

BACKGROUND: Although many aesthetic surgeons believe that beveling the angle of an incision improves the aesthetic outcome with regard to scaring, the literature remains scarce largely because few studies have been conducted. OBJECTIVE: This systematic review therefore aims to identify whether using a beveled incision adds an aesthetic benefit, to determine whether there is a specific angle that yields a superior outcome, and for the first time, to present a complete discussion of this subject for practicing surgeons...

BACKGROUND: Breast reconstruction after mastectomy is a part of breast cancer treatment. There is a lack of data regarding the impact of reconstruction over psychological traits and quality of life. The aim of this study is to evaluate personality changes in patients who underwent reconstructive surgery. METHODS: Thirty-seven women underwent breast reconstruction. These women took the Crown-Crisp Experiential Index before and after the different procedures. The questionnaire analyzes: (a) the satisfaction level with personal relationships before and after surgery, and the level of satisfaction with surgical results and (b) personality index...

OBJECTIVES: The retroauricular fascia flap (RFF) is one of the most commonly used vascularized linings for auriculocephalic sulcus reconstruction in staged total auricular reconstruction. This study aims to investigate the histomorphometric features regarding the retroauricular fascia. METHODS: Histological evaluation included qualitative observation and quantitative analysis of sections of RFF stained with hematoxylin and eosin, Masson's trichrome, Elastica van Gieson, CD31, and Lyve-1...

BACKGROUND: Asymmetric bilateral gynecomastia (ABGM) is uncommon, and reports on its characteristics are rare. In the present study, we investigated the clinical characteristics and surgical treatment of ABGM. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective study of 1159 patients with gynecomastia who underwent subcutaneous mastectomy with liposuction at Damsoyu Hospital from January 2014 to February 2016. We then analyzed differences in the characteristics and operative results between two groups of patients: those with asymmetric and symmetric gynecomastia...
