PURPOSE: Computer imaging has become increasingly popular for rhinoplasty. Three-dimensional (3D) analysis permits a more comprehensive view from multiple vantage points. However, the predictability and concordance between the simulated and actual result have not been morphometrically studied. The purpose of this study was to aesthetically and quantitatively compare the simulated to actual rhinoplasty result. METHODS: A retrospective review of 3D images (VECTRA, Canfield) for rhinoplasty patients was performed...

INTRODUCTION: Anaplastic large cell lymphoma associated with breast implants is receiving increased attention. Most cases have been reported in Europe, North America (USA and Canada), Australia and New Zealand. Fewer cases have been reported in Latin America (including Mexico), Africa and Asia. METHODS: This report was delivered during our national plastic surgery meeting in Cancun in May 2017. Before the meeting, two participants reviewed the literature. The review was performed using the following information sources: PubMed, Embase, Cochrane, Fisterra, Google Scholar and LILACS, with entries from 1980 to August 2015 in several languages (English, Spanish, French and Portuguese)...

The author has modified previously described techniques of the superior suspension of the platysma muscle to Lore's fascia by developing an auriculoplastysmal fascial flap, which detaches the posterior platysma from its retaining ligaments to the sternomastoid muscle. Anterior to this flap, the platysma muscle is undermined and suture captured with three throws of a permanent 2.0 Tevdek suture. This suture and its three throws are fixed anterior to the tragus, which includes Lore's fascia and on tightening elevates the whole of the anterior neck as well as defines the cervicomental angle...

INTRODUCTION: The emergence of hyaluronic acid dermal fillers with lidocaine has transformed the minimally invasive treatment of wrinkles, lines and folds of the face. Patients can be treated quickly, painlessly and without the need for large doses of lidocaine. Therefore, it is important to scientifically evaluate the merits of lidocaine-containing products over those without. METHODS: The two products, with (UJU) and without lidocaine (UJ), were randomly injected into nasolabial folds of 75 healthy volunteers with varying skin types in a split face study, age ranging 26-60 years...

BACKGROUND: Brachioplasties often culminate in unsightly scars that are a source of disappointment to patients. We aimed to evaluate the results of M-Y axilloplasty following massive weight loss. PATIENTS: We performed a retrospective assessment of our technique for brachioplasty with an M-Y axilloplasty in 159 female patients after massive weight loss. This retrospective study covered a study period of 10 years. METHOD: After substantial lipoaspiration, the incision is placed on the internal side of the arm, with an M-shaped axilloplasty...

BACKGROUND: Hyaluronic acid (HA) gel is a widely used dermal filler for the correction facial volume loss. The incorporation of lidocaine with HA provides a pain-relieving alternative for individuals considering facial rejuvenation. The aim of this systematic review and meta-analysis is to compare the effectiveness and safety of HA with lidocaine (HAL) with that of HA without lidocaine for the treatment of nasolabial folds (NLFs). METHODS: Studies were identified using the electronic databases PubMed, Embase, Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials and Web of Science from inception up to January 2018...

Standardized reliable medical photographic documentation should be made by every plastic surgeon for valid comparisons of preoperative and post-operative illustrations. However, photographic documentation in aesthetic surgery has also an important medico-legal impact as if not performed accurately it can result in severe legal ramifications. Therefore, we evaluated and redefined the existing photographic standards for abdominal contouring procedures and abdominoplasty/lipectomy further, to achieve consistent detailed photographs without any corresponding distortion or distraction...

BACKGROUND: In nipple reconstruction, the width, length, and thickness of modified star flaps are concerns for long-term reconstructed nipple projection. However, the flap's projection has not been analyzed, based on its thickness. The aim of the present study was to investigate how flap thickness in a modified star flap influences the resulting reconstructed nipple and achieves an appropriate flap width in design. METHODS: Sixty-three patients who underwent nipple reconstruction using a modified star flap following implant-based breast reconstruction between August 2014 and July 2016 were included in this case-controlled study...

Skin grafting is often the first choice for closing forehead defects. However, the aesthetics of skin grafting-reconstructed forehead defects are still not accepted by a large number of patients. With the technological advancement of laser hair removal, scalp flaps have been considered as donors for reconstruction of forehead defects. We evaluated 10 cases of forehead defect reconstructions with expanded scalp flaps followed by hair removal by an 800 nm diode laser. All flaps survived uneventfully and underwent 4-6 laser treatments for hair removal...

INTRODUCTION: Nipple inversion is defined as a non-projectile nipple. It is a frequent pathologic condition, in which the whole nipple, or a portion of its, is buried inward towards the lactiferous duct and lies below the plane of the areola. Numerous strategies have been described to correct nipple inversion. All the procedures have the purpose to give a good shape to the nipple, preserving its function and sensitivity, when it is possible. To avoid recurrences and to obtain good aesthetic results, we present a modified percutaneous technique...

BACKGROUND: Rhinoplasty is a popular aesthetic and reconstructive surgical procedure. It is one of the top five surgical cosmetic procedures performed worldwide. OBJECTIVES: To evaluate global trends in rhinoplasty research spanning 20 years between 1994 and 2013. METHODS: The top 15 plastic surgery and otolaryngology journals containing rhinoplasty research were determined using impact factors (IF). A database of rhinoplasty articles from 1994 to 2013 was created to include the following classifications: IF, authors' geographic location, study design, level of evidence (LOE), and pertinence to aesthetic or reconstructive rhinoplasty...

BACKGROUND: Ostrzenski's G-pot anatomical structure discovery has been verified by the anatomy, histology, MRI in vivo, and electrovaginography in vivo studies. The objectives of this scientific-clinical investigation were to develop a new surgical reconstructive intervention (G-spotplasty); to determine the ability of G-spotplasty surgical implementation; to observe for potential complications; and to gather initial information on whether G-spotplasty improves female sexual activity, sexual behaviors, and sexual concerns...

BACKGROUND: Festoons and malar bags present a particular challenge to the plastic surgeon and commonly persist after the traditional lower blepharoplasty. They are more common than we think and a trained eye will be able to recognize them. Lower blepharoplasty in these patients requires addressing the lid-cheek junction and midcheek using additional techniques such as orbicularis retaining ligament (ORL) and zygomaticocutaneous ligament (ZCL) release, midface lift, microsuction, or even direct excision (Kpodzo e al...

BACKGROUND: Elevation of a conjoined fascial flap composed of the pectoralis major, serratus anterior, and external oblique fascia is a type of surgical technique using autologous tissue to cover the lower pole after immediate one-stage direct-to-implant (DTI) breast reconstruction. However, volumetric breast implants hinder use of this technique alone. For better structural stability and more aesthetically favorable breast contour in large breasts, we have devised a technique involving dual coverage of the lower pole by a conjoined fascial flap and acellular dermal matrix (ADM)...

BACKGROUND: Volumetric changes to facial fat that occur with aging remain poorly understood. The aim of this study was to evaluate for longitudinal changes to midfacial fat volumes in a group of individuals. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective longitudinal study of adult subjects who underwent multiple facial computed tomographic (CT) scans timed at least 8 years apart. Subjects who underwent facial surgery or suffered facial trauma were excluded. Facial CT scans were analyzed, and superficial cheek fat volumes were measured and compared to track changes that occurred with aging...
