Cultural competency has become a keystone in forming a successful doctor-patient relationship to provide culturally appropriate services that respect patients' ethno-cultural beliefs, values, attitudes, and conventions. In cosmetic surgery, an often-overlooked aspect of a patient's cultural is his and her religious beliefs. In response to this paucity of resources for cosmetic surgeons to enable them to properly service their religious patients, this project was undertaken. This review article covers the three main Abrahamic religions (Judaism, Christianity, and Islam) and was written with the assistance of a prominent bioethicist from each religion (see Acknowledgements)...

INTRODUCTION: The assessment of outcomes in aesthetic rhinoplasty is highly relevant because patient satisfaction and improved health-related quality of life (QoL) are the predominant factors in determining success. The patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs) employed in rhinoplasty research studies are remarkably diverse, thus yielding difficulties with data analysis. The aim of this article is to provide a comprehensive review of the literature to reveal the relevance of the QoL assessment for rhinosurgeons...

BACKGROUND: Linear hypertrophic scar is a common surgical problem that can be difficult to manage, especially for the median sternotomy scar. Botulinum toxin type A (BTA) is widely used in cosmetic surgery and has been shown to improve scar quality recently. The aim of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of BTA injected in the early postoperative of median sternotomy on preventing scar formation. METHODS: In this prospective randomized controlled trial, 19 consecutive patients who underwent median sternotomy were enrolled...

INTRODUCTION: The position of the lower lateral cartilages (LLC) is closely related to the function of the external nasal valve (ENV). When there is a cephalic malposition of these cartilages, the nasal alae have inadequate support, which leads to ENV insufficiency during deep inspiration. METHODS: Retrospective study with 60 patients evaluated: the positioning of the LLC and the occurrence of ENV insufficiency; the effectiveness of structuring the medial and lateral walls of the ENV; and the frequency of the grafts used for structuring it...

Breast surgery has long been viewed as an art more than a science. However, defining and objectively measuring the ideal breast morphology and aesthetic proportions are fundamental for surgical planning and to setting the goals of surgery as well as to evaluate surgical outcomes. Despite the fact that much has been written about aesthetic and reconstructive breast surgery, there is still no real consensus about what the attributes are of an ideal breast. Moreover, there are in fact no objective standard measurement systems and guidelines to describe ideal or even normal breast shape...

BACKGROUND: Tumescent local anesthesia (TLA) consists of infiltration of saline solution with lidocaine and epinephrine into the tissues to obtain regional anesthesia and vasoconstriction. The use of TLA in augmentation mammoplasty has been described for sub-glandular positioning. We describe a modified TLA technique for primary sub-muscular breast augmentation reporting our experience during the past 7 years. METHODS: From 2010 to 2017, 300 patients underwent bilateral primary sub-muscular breast augmentation under TLA and conscious sedation...

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the efficacy of a new correction method (inverted "V" release surgery) for epicanthus as a cause of congenital entropion/trichiasis in the lower eyelid. METHODS: From May 2014 to May 2017, 60 eyes of 30 patients (13 male and 17 female patients, with the age of 6.85 ± 4.52 years underwent inverted "V" release surgery to correct epicanthus. The incision in the epicanthus and entropion was continuous. Lower eyelid entropion/trichiasis was corrected by a two-layered suture...

Nipple-areola complex (NAC) loss is one of the most devastating complications of mastopexy or breast reduction, and it requires revisional procedures with poor aesthetic outcome. In high-risk patients, a free nipple graft could be a choice, but it is associated with the same aesthetic concerns for both patients and surgeons. We report our experience with the septum-supero-medial-based mammaplasty to treat 22 patients with severe breast ptosis (nipple-to-sternal-notch distance > 40 cm). No NAC loss was observed...

Seromas represent the most frequent complication following immediate breast reconstruction surgery, in particular when acellular dermal matrix or synthetic meshes are used to add coverage to implants. Little information regarding breast seroma management is available in the literature. When seroma becomes clinically significant, current methods for its management consist of repeated needle aspiration. We report a fast, efficient, easy and riskless technique to perform serum aspiration in patients who underwent breast reconstruction with a tissue expander that allows simultaneous drainage and expansion of the implant at once...

Surgical and non-surgical aesthetic treatments are very popular throughout Asia and in particular in China. With the globalisation and immigration of Chinese people to other countries where many seek treatment from Western-trained doctors, it is important to understand the ideals of beauty amongst Chinese people so as to achieve optimal results. We conducted an online survey to understand the preference of Han Chinese laypersons for facial shape, profile (straight, convex, concave), jaw angle and shape, and shape of the chin, nose, and lips...

BACKGROUND: In this series of patients the cutaneous insertion and strength of voluntary contraction of the muscles in the upper third of the face were used as guidelines for botulinum toxin application named "BTA Codes." METHOD: Anatomical dissection of fresh cadavers identified the shape and cutaneous insertions of the muscles in the upper third of the face. Patient voluntary contraction of the muscles in the upper third of the face created different patterns of skin lines classified by the 4-grade Facial Wrinkle Scale...

BACKGROUND: The columellar strut graft is one of the most commonly used invisible grafts in tip plasty techniques for nasal tip projection. However, the columellar strut graft induces cephalic rotation of the dome with nasal tip projection. This is an effective change in Western people with a long nose; however, this change should be avoided in Asians who have a relatively short nose and visible nostrils. We designed a more convenient and effective technique using a rein-shaped columellar strut graft that can prevent cephalic rotation of the dome...

Breast animation deformity is a known complication of subpectoral implant placement that is usually corrected by repositioning the implant to the prepectoral position. Other less common treatment options include performing the muscle splitting biplanar technique, triple plane technique, neuromodulator injections, and secondary neurotomies via transection of the pectoral muscle. We report a patient with animation deformity successfully treated with direct identification and ablation of the medial and lateral pectoral nerves using selective bipolar electrocautery...

BACKGROUND: The Dysmorphic Concern Questionnaire (DCQ) is a widely used screening instrument assessing dysmorphic concerns ranging from a mild to an excessive level. It is often used in the setting of plastic and aesthetic surgery. The present study aimed at examining the psychometric properties of the DCQ in a random general population sample. METHODS: A representative sample of the German general population (N = 2053, aged between 18 and 65 years, 54% females) completed the DCQ as well as questionnaires on depression and appearance concerns...

BACKGROUND: Simultaneous augmentation-mastopexy is a particularly tricky operation with a considerable reoperation rate. The pectoralis muscle sling has proven to be a suitable alternative technique for long-term results in breast parenchyma suspension without silicone implants. This study aims to propose a promising approach to simultaneous augmentation-mastopexy revisional surgery using an inverted dual-plane technique acting as a muscular sling. METHODS: A 10-year historic cohort was conducted to obtain the following variables from our preexisting database: age, preoperative measurements, operative technicalities, implant details, time from procedure to revision, complications, and outcomes...

BACKGROUND: Botulinum toxin is used extensively, and its use for aesthetic indications in the lower face and neck is now becoming increasingly popular. It is the ideal alternative to surgical procedures for patients who are too young for facelift surgery or who are unwilling to take recuperation time. We review current approaches to BTX A treatment for horizontal neck lines. METHODS: Subjects were 20 women with an average age of 43 with mild to moderate horizontal neck lines but have had no treatment by BTX A for the past 3 months...
